Ivory Coast music review Alpha Blondy at his best!
This is Alpha Blondy's best CD by far. His live performance in this CD is a masterpiece. If you don't have this CD in your collection, you are missing one of the great CD's ever recorded. You don't have to speak the language to appreciate the musical genius of the entire band.

Ivory Coast music review a real good cd
I recommend this cd. It is a double cd and represents the greatness of Alpha Blondy. He is a cool dude and probably my next favorite artist to Bob Marley. Tracks 8 "Sweet Fanta Diallo" and 9 "Assinie Mafia" are two great songs back to back. I wish my copy hadn't gotten scratched cause it is hard to find, but you can always order it off this site.

Ivory Coast music review Best Live Reggae since Bob Marley and the Wailers.
The best live reggae recording since Bob Marley and the Wailers Live. This two CD live recording captures Alpha Blondy and his band at their best. Alpha Blondy surrounds himself with a great reggae rhythm group but also horns and voices. The music is reggae dancing at its best. CD will remind you not only of the Wailers but also Paul Simon's Graceland. Lyrics are in English and French, however it does not matter as the music says it all. This is a perfect summer CD, will have you dancing no matter where you are.

Ivory Coast music reivew Get out of Jail Free
Y'all ever been in the doghouse with your significant other? Take a tip from a cop who does, chum and learn to sing 'Since I met you Baby' like Ivory Joe Hunter, and you MIGHT survive if you'll pipe up at the right time. Any fool can sing it (trust me) but nobody sings it like Ivory Joe. This is almost as good as wearing a kevlar vest (you just can't trust those gals from Texas). Lots cheaper, too. Seriously, that one cut makes the whole CD, there's other goodies on here, you too can learn to do the mambo. But 'Since I Met You Baby' is the real Get Out Of Jail Free Card.

Ivory Coast music review Heaven Came Down To Earth
Part of Razor & Tie's line of terrific mid-90's retrospectives of underappriciated 50's stars (Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Chuck Willis among them), "Since I Met You Baby" does exactly what those others did - namely, state the case for greater reknown. Hunter is virtually strictly remembered for the song from which this collection takes its name, a massive hit from late '56/early '57 which remains one of early rock 'n' roll's slow dance classics. More astute fans will be able to name his two 1950 R&B chart toppers, "I Almost Lost My Mind" and "I Need You So", both of which were revived mid-decade by white stars (Pat Boone, hitting #1 Pop with a surprisingly admirable version of the former, and Elvis Presley who did the latter expertly in '56 for an album). Other than that, only true historians would be able to delve deeper into Hunter's legacy.

This is the best place to start your education then. Taking 25 songs from two labels, this spans the entire 1950's, his most prolific stretch of recording, gathering up nine R&B and Pop hits, plus some truly fantasic non-charted sides to paint a fuller picture of a veteran musician who was capable of delivering in any style.

Hunter began recording back in 1933 while still a teen and by the 40's owned two record labels making him one of the first black men, and one of the first artists of any race, to run his own company. Both disappeared quickly, but not before giving him his first Number One hit ("Pretty Mama Blues" - available on other collections of his 40's work). A brief stop at King Records gave him a few more hits and by the time he landed at MGM Records in 1950 he was primed for the start of the R&B revolution that would lead to rock 'n' roll.

That's where this collection picks up. The first five cuts are from those early 50's MGM years and showcases Hunter's feathery piano, pleasant, intimate vocals and his prolific writing (he penned over 2,500 songs in his lifetime, including a few specifically written for Presley, who befriended him in 1956) all of which made Ivory Joe (which was his real name) one of the era's best R&B balladeers along with Percy Mayfield and later Johnny Ace. When rock 'n' roll dawned in the mid-50's Hunter was already past 40, but the hit cover versions of his songs by Boone, Presley, even pop stars the McGuire Sisters (busy ripping off every black R&B singer they could find, grabbing his "It May Sound Silly" for a trip to the Top 20), and Teresa Brewer (who copped "A Tear Fell" from him and took it to #5) proved he still could connect with younger audiences. As a result, now on R&B powerhouse Atlantic Records, Hunter stormed back into the spotlight with back to back smashes "Since I Met You Baby" and "Empty Arms" that made him, along with Big Joe Turner, the 1950's oldest rock 'n' roll star.

With "Empty Arms" in 1957 he resumed a flirtation with country-sounding R&B which he'd started on King Records with great success in '49 ("Jealous Heart" - #2 R&B), a move that far preceeded Ray Charles more famous groundbreaking move from R&B to C&W a few years later. Just one of the many reasons why Hunter is deserving of a Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame induction for which he has thus far been shamefully denied.

This disc shows Hunter at his best - from the ballads he was most adept at and known for, but also offering him as a smokin' bluesman ("I Feel So Good") and a strong-mid-50's rocker ("I Want Somebody", "You Mean Everything To Me", "You Flip Me Baby"). The liner notes are very informative, there's a full sessionography including sidemen, recording and release dates, as well as a few pictures. It is not an album that will knock your socks off on first listen, Hunter just wasn't the kind of performer. If given a chance for repeated listening though, it will slowly sneak up on you until you find yourself uncontrollably humming "I Almost Lost My Mind" on the subway, elevator or in board meetings, (or on the school bus and playground), while people look at you oddly. Let those quizzical onlookers listen to this disc though and soon they'll be humming along too.

Ivory Coast music review The Prophets
This is one of my favorite from alpha blondy. Simply because as you might have probably already guessed from the title, this album is based on religion. He goes on to talk about the role the prophets and the troubles they went through in spreading GOD's word in "ALLAH LEKA NETCHI". Then makes a parallel with us, later generations, in "CORINTHIENS", referring to a section of the bible, as to how important it is for every human being to stay in the straight path and hold on to the truth in our every day life. In closing with the religion theme, he again sings about hypocrisy, namely in "KOLOMBARIA", where he warns human beings about thinking they are cheating GOD when they are only furthering themselves into doing bad deeds.

Then he touchily browses the troubles and tribulation people go through or have gone through in their life. Firsts in line are "BLACK MEN TEARS" and "JAH MUSIC", where he portrays some the troubles black people have been through during slavery time and the discrimination and vicious cycle black people are caught into nowadays. Secondly, he goes to an even more general subject, which is the struggle every body goes against in trying to lead a good and exemplary life in today's society in "FACE TO FACE".

Finally, he returns to topics typical of the motherland, Africa. In "COUP DETAT", Alpha denounces the wrong doing of some African leaders who thirsty of power try to get it by any means necessary. And many times they do so by using military force. "BANANA" is specific to the Ivory Coast (Cote D'Ivoire) in that he tells the problems the Ivorian dairy farmer faces in trying to make a living from his work. Not only does he have to overcome the uncertainties of the weather but also producing quality food in convenient quantities in order to be able to sell it at a good price and make profit out of it.

I recognize that often times Alpha using French, Dioula (an African language from the Ivory Coast), or English in trying to convey his message, makes it difficult for other who don't understand to grasp the concepts behind the melody. But again, it is only natural for him to do so and that is the reason why I tried to give as much details as I could fit in this slot. I would fiercely recommend this album to anybody found of reggae, good music or good singers able to bring attention to meaningful subjects.

If you listen to this and like it you should also go for "SOS GUERRE TRIBALE" and "MASADA" which are other album of his dealing with similar subjects in a philosophical manner.

this record is a great representation of traditional african music. although ity leaves out quite a bit of countries in the collection, it caputres the liveliness of african folk music. I love it.

Ivory Coast music reivew Rasta is everywhere
This is a wonderful record made outside of Jamaica. The rhythms are catchy along with highly charged lyrics. Though much of the
singing is in French, as this album originates from one of the
French colonies in Africa, the lyrics flow quite nicely. If you
have a real appreciation for the international appeal that reggae is known for, this album works.

Ivory Coast music reivew revolution by alpha blondy
this is a good piece of good music. The more i like it (even without understanding the whole content!)stems from the trust that i have come to associate the musician's concern for crucial issues that affect the world and especially the african continent as a whole.Alpha always tries to avoid cheap sensational popular music(sentimental-love ballads) and chooses to concentrate on topical issues that touch each one of us in this continent and thus i do kindly refer to him as one the greatest intellectual musicians of our times in Africa atleast!

Les Go (roughly, "the Girlfriends," in the urban sense) consist of three young female singer-dancers of West African Manding ancestry. The group began as an offshoot of a music and drama troupe called L'Ensemble Koteba, which is based in the cosmopolitan city of Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire. The liner notes refer to this album as "world pop with no apology," and it is an indictment of the rigidly exclusionary state of the world-music market that such a disclaimer is even necessary. The trio sings closely harmonized, tightly crafted commercial singles that owe as much to Michael Jackson (the album was produced by Quincy Jones alum Bruce Swedien) as it does to the jelis (griots), the Caribbean, and the Paris melting pot. There is a good-humored, sweetly naive girl-group sexiness and unjaded sophistication to Les Go's delivery that is bound to please, if trad fanciers can get past the percolating R&B bass lines, synth patches, and drum machines lurking amid the koras and djembes. A Manding-language cover of the Seals & Crofts hit "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" will provoke a lot of discussion, but it is both more charming and not nearly as funny as expected. --Christina Roden

Ivory Coast music reivew hip. period...
ah... it's almost three a.m. in the morning. the wife has awakened me with her version, i guess, of cuddling - to push me halfway off the bed. folks do know about that, i hope. but those who know about these three ladies, les go, appear to know not what to say about them. (i am the first to review this cd.) as i did awaken with one of their songs - sou - in my head and as i do own headphones, it was into the livingroom i went to listen to les go's cd, dan gna, which is a favorite of mine. dan gna is sung beautifully. their music has a contemporary sound sung alongside a rousing, ringing, swinging african traditional and rhythmic pulse. their vocal harmonies; their rhythmic application of vocals over a very hip african sound; les go's smooth delivery and their obvious love of music is what is dignified on this cd. it's a groove. i love it. (to be awakened in the middle of the night and allowed to sneak away to hear these three women sing and hit it so beautifully is one of those hidden pleasures.) what else can i say? allow yourself the pleasure of les go. it's one you won't regret.

Ivory Coast music reivew A rare and unusual piano duo with contrasting styles.
Brookmeyer never unpacks his valve trombone, and teams up with Bill Evans on piano. Recorded one afternoon in 1959, Brookmeyer offers a staight-ahead, technically rich piano style that contrasts with the more laid back, spontaneous, and lyrical one that became the hallmark of Bill Evans.

At the time of this recording, Brookmeyer was an established trombonist with several records to his name. Evans was emerging as a phenomonal pianist, having just joined the Miles Davis quintet in 1958.

The tracks recorded were standards (someone liked Gershwin), with the faster paced ones (Honeysuckle Rose) spotlighting Brookmeyer and the slower paced ones (The Man I Love) allowing Evans to show his stuff. Typical of the stereo style of the day, Brookmeyer is heard on the left channel and Evans on the right, with Percy Heath on bass and Connie Kay on drums mixed across both channels.

This is a "must have" CD for jazz enthusiasts because of the unusual instrumentation, and as a point of reference in the developing career of Bill Evans.

Excellent songs but, tape hiss and record pops and distortion. Tape hiss is loud enough to overshadow the backgroung music. Highs in the vocals are distorted due to groove wear of the "Orginal" source. Definatley not from master tapes or from virgin discs.
