Kenya music review Something new for North Americans.
Ever wonder if it were possible to bottle magic and sell it what would people do? Probably ignore it and pay attention to somethingcommon, boring, or stupid.

In an age where we have tohe ability to make better music why are people listening to Brittany Spears and Moesha?

This is real music made by a real musician!!

If you like African music at all, you will love this album.

THANK YOU Mapangala!

Kenya music review Sweet vocals, swinging session
Another treasure to add to your growing collection of great African recordings. SAMBA MAPANGALA took his skills as a musician from Zaire to East Africa in the 70's and finally settled in Kenya, where he became a big hit. These tracks were developed and recorded by his group ORCHESTRE VIRUNGA in the early 80's, and all hum with creative energy. Complementing the rich vocals of SAMBA and FATAKI are some sublime guitar licks from various master guitarists and a bubbling bass. Check out LAWI SOMANA'S solo on AHMED SABIT (Track 2), which teases the senses so exquisitely, and helps make this track a classic. Another noticeable feature of the album is the jazzy horn section. (Total music: 53 min.)

Kenya music review The Best of African Songs by Safari Sound Band--GREAT album
This music is so fun and enlightening and will make you feel like you are on Safari just listening to it. The lyrics are mostly in Swahili and are good ways to learn a few words of this lovely language. I especially liked "Jambo Jambo" which is sung on birthday celebrations in Kenya but there wasn't one of the 14 tracks which we didn't like. Kids love it too!

Kenya music review Nostagic sounds on CD
This CD perfectly demonstrates the wonders of technology. Having struggled to listen to a gradually deteriorating taped version of SINA MAKOSA, that classic by LES WANYIKA, since the early 1980's, I am now able to enjoy this and other equally exceptional classic recordings on CD. The quality of guitar playing, the rythmn, melodies and harmonies of these songs is exquisite. They have soul. To anyone with memories of Kenyan music in the 70's and 80's, or anyone who wants to acquaint themself with this spirited music, this album is a blessing.(Also check out LES WANYIKA's new CD AMIGO (CLP001).)

      Kenya music review Astounding!
Songs Swahili Sing is a contender for the very best of the "Original Music" releases. For anyone interested in where authentic traditions of world music collide, this disc is paradise. Rich African voices, the influemce of the cairo scene as well as wafts of India peek through the songs this collage of artists. This cd introduced me to taraab music and I have never found a sample so amazing since. Ethnomusicologist John Storm Roberts brings us this amazing treat. OF THE HIGHEST ORDER!!

Kenya music review THE BEST OF THE BEST ARE FEATURED IN THIS CD
LIKE I SAID , THE ARTISTS JUST BRING OUT THE EMOTIONS IN YOU AND LEAVE YOU FEELING GREAT. THE LYRICS ARE JUST OUTSTANDING AND ONE OF THE BEST TAARAB COMPILATIONS I'VE HEARD SO FAR. KEEP IT UP!!!!!!!

Kenya music review I own over 10,000 CDs this one is literally my favorite
This CD changed my life. I found it in a bargain bin with no idea what it was i bought it on a whim. It led me down a whole new path in my life, including a degree in ethnomusicology. After hunting for years since, I have still never found a CD quite as sublime as this perfect record date. I have made so many people from so many diverse backgrounds and tastes literally get up on an end table or sofa back and dance like fools. I really am serious. Met Samba at one point in central illinois while he was touring the US , and he is a sweet open person, somewhat confused that this kid from IL was singing along through the show in Lingala without understanding a thing i was saying. Buy it new. I bet you make more money than Samba if you are surfing here. He deserves more.

      • Esa Noche - Cafe Tacuba
      • Gabby Kai - James 'Bla' Pahinui
      • Kothbiro - Ayub Ogada
      • Este Son - Juan Carlos Urena
      • La Milonga De Ricardo En Cha-Cha-Cha - Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca
The artists gathered together here hail from nations and cultures noted for the growing and export of coffee. As with this CD's companion release, Music from the Tea Lands, one senses the possibility of lucrative product tie-ins, but part of the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity and any catchy idea that gets the music out there is a good thing. Like the luscious drink itself, the tunes come in many intensities and flavors, ranging from a light-as-air ditty from Peru, to the more complex vocal stylings of Colombia's Claudia Gomez, to Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's earthy Afro-Cuban Congolese rumba. The album is a lively and fascinating travelogue, making landfall in Cuba, Kenya, Brazil, Uganda, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Peru. As with many other Putumayo projects, aside from its musical pleasures, this set would make an entertaining and educational experience for younger family members. --Christina Roden

Kenya music reivew Not strong enough-this compilation is decaf
If this album is like coffee,it's decaf. It lacks the punch to keep one awake for an early morning drive.I'd be asleep at the wheel.

I used to have this CD,but I took it to a used CD store.

Its few highlights are Susana Baca,Ernest Ranglin,Thomas Mapfumo,James 'Bla'Pahinui&Ayub Ogada. The rest are easy-listening Buena Vista Social Club.

When it comes to Putumayo's themed compilations,I reccomend "Gardens of Eden" (sadly,it's out of print),"Music from the Tea Lands"(EXCELLENT!),"Asian Lounge".I am looking forward to "Music from the Wine Lands"--considering I live in the Wine Country.Hopefully,"Music from the Wine Lands" won't be snooze-inducing like this one.

Kenya music reivew Chill out with a cup of coffee or a Mojito......
Good Putumayo CD. Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!

Kenya music review One of the best world music compilataions I've heard
Amazing collection of songs - not one is a throwaway. If you're looking to break into "world music" the Putumayo collections are a great starting point.
