A compilation assembled by German label Blue Flame, Women's World Voices brings together material of female vocalists from all over the globe, including Cameroon, Turkey, Cuba, Japan, and Norway. An eclectic array of styles ranging from electronic groove to contemporary folk and layered tribal-inflected pop, Voices is literally all over the map. While some of the selections reverberate with a distasteful nervosity or a schmaltzy womanism, others in the collection stand apart for notice. The disc starts with Brazilian artists Mo'horizons Feat and Leila Pantel bringing on the disco party vibe with "Foto Viva." Sudanese artist Rasha comes across as a cooler, jazzier, and more exotic Sade on "Azara Hay," and Belgium's Elisa Waut does a wonderfully bored Nico-esque turn at "Sad King." As a whole, the compilation serves well as an introduction to international female artists who might otherwise go unheard by American audiences. --Paige La Grone
