Mali music review The last of Brenda
MALI is Brenda's last and certainly most modern album. Released just before her tragic early death in Jo'burg in May of 2004, MALI will always have a sadness about it knowing it is the last chorus of genius we will ever hear from her. The is the best technical recording Brenda ever made. Clear and crisp sounds permeate every track; echoing voice lines, and a tight vibrant base make ones ears and heart instantly move into a swing. MALI is guaranteed to make any stereo sound sweet and soulful. In MALI Benda is haunting, powerful, and finally shows the professional maturity of 23 years brilliant music making. As Brenda was herself an explosion of life, so too is MALI, all the happiness sadness, triumphs and tragedies all coming at you at full speed. Whether you understand the language or not, whether you are a fan of Kwaito or not, you will be sure to be moved from the depth and passion of her irreplaceable voice. You will tap your feet and swing your hips and know this is truely great music from the soul to the soul. A sad but brilliant swansong for Cape Town's, indeed South Africa's, most sensational modern artist.

Mali music review Authentic malian djembe playing and singing
This CD presents traditional malian rhythms and songs as they are performed in Mali and is a great value for anybody who is interested in approaching african music in a serious way. Moussa's solos are simply beautiful and the Malian female voices present in many songs adds a magic touch to the album.

Aminata Kamissoko, daughter of praise singer Kandia Diabate, is destined to be one of West Africa's great female singers. After a marriage at age 16, Kamissoko traveled to Ivory Coast and Senegal, apprenticing as a singer in many bands and developing a wider repertoire and stylistic influence--never abandoning her traditional heritage as a jali but never a prisoner to it, either. The album centers on the powerful title track, a tribute to her adoptive son Lamine (also the kora player on the album). Kamissoko, who could not bear children, takes a huge step forward to proclaim her love of her son, in the process shattering a taboo in a society that values motherhood. This and the other songs on the album are delivered over a simple, mostly traditional musical backing of kora and percussion, with some guitar from the fluid hands of Zou Diarra. --Louis Gibson

Mali Blue is a godsend for the budget-conscious world music fans out there, collecting 14 tracks from Lobi Traore's four out-of-print or import albums released between 1991 and 1998. As is the case with his mentor Ali Farka Toure (who produces and appears on several tracks), Traore fuses warm conversational singing and hypnotic blues guitar to the traditional Bambara sounds of djembi, tamani and n'goni. The connection between the two cultures is particularly potent on the songs featuring harmonica player Vincent Butcher, whose strong grasp of the blues lexicon expands the dynamic reach of these riff-oriented tunes. Nonetheless, even without the harmonica, Traore does excellent job on his own, moving from stripped down guitar and voice ("Warani") to electric blues ("Ni Tougou La Mogo Miko") to more Africanized sounds ("Sadiourou"), leaving listeners with a well-rounded sense of who this singer/guitarist is. Truly a fine introduction (or reintroduction) to an artist deserving wider recognition. --Tad Hendrickson
