From A Passionate InwardnessThe Cd I have is,'Moorish Music From Muratania'. As inspiration for well known Malian guitarist, Ali Farka Toure(who recorded with Ry Cooder on Talking Timbuctoo), Dimi Mint Abba possesses one of the most expressively passionate voices recording in any language today. I would rest my case with the single track 4 title,'Hassaniya', a love poem. Both Dimi and Khalifa Ould Eide are pofessional musicians, iggawin, who are adapting instruments from throughout the Arab world, such as the oud and qanun to traditional Mauritanian music. The electric guitar is also present on this disc. To a novice, like myself, these 'intrusions' go undetected. They embellish the thrilling voices and throbbing complex rhythms that evoke the shifting moods of arid countries. She sings,'In praise of the Prophet', adapted from an old Yemeni poem, which seguines into praise of Muaritania's independence. Having no inkling of Arabic, I'm at the mercy of what may be quite clumsy translations. 'Art's Plume' has 'winged songs in rapture float aboard a vessel of hopes/The songs of my lute - from my heart's bliss or lamentations proceeding - do my soul transport.' The fact that my culture has effectively extinguished such concepts from popular speech aside, it's for certain that Dimi's voice, her being, has not. This entire CD is indeed ' a whisper elevating as a golden bridge, soaring in loftiness.' That said, the choice of track 10 for the exemplary'Desert Blues' compilation, is not representative of the great ecstasy experienced elsewhere on this treasure. Mauritania has withstood colonisation throughout milennia. Since the demise of the USSR the U.S propoganda machine has accelerated its program of painting Islamic cultures as dysfunctional. ie: measured by their failure to integrate with the global neoliberal orders. One hopes that the persausive powers of an all-encompassing market do not erode voices as strident as Dimi's and Khalifa's, or that the propaganda succeeds in demonizing them.
dimi mint abbaHello, My name is alifal ben lahbib, I live in the United Kingdom, My surname is Alifal and family name is ben lahbib, I studying in an English class in the Uk,
InfectiousThe first second you put this on you wonder what's wrong with the sound quality, relax, within minutes you will be weaving round the room like a mad old dervish, wondering why on earth you too cannnot sing like this even though you try.

This ambitious three-CD collection is quite simply the best introduction to the diverse popular music of Africa that there is. While it stands by itself as the perfect instant African music collection, it also serves as a fine jumping off point for exploring Africa's myriad musical cultures. The producers have done an excellent job selecting outstanding tracks by a broad variety of Africa's premier groups and recording stars from all over the continent. This compilation offers maximum diversity and impeccable sound quality throughout. The lushly illustrated and annotated 48-page booklet that comes with this set is rich with information about this crucial musical continent. --Jeff Grubb

Best of the Best...I have maybe 25 CDs of music from the continent, and this is still far and away my favorite. The one-disc "sampler" is like a "Best of..." -- very good, but as many listeners will know from first hand experience, some of the finer, and more subtle pieces are in the original complete recordings. True here in spades. If you only own one set of discs to represent Africa and all its nations and sounds, this is it.
Fantastic collection! If you're interested in listening to some African music and don't know where to start, you can't do better than this. It's got modern and traditional stuff on it -- mostly modern -- from all over the continent. My tapes of this set live in my cassette road case, and I listen to them when I go on long trips. The variety and quality are both excellent.
The booklet's a nice touch, too.

MaloumaIf you have any interest in Mauritanian music or good music for that matter, I would redirect you to either of Dimi Mint Abba's recordings. She is indescribably more potent than Malouma. This disc is basically a second rate western pop attempt from a music culture with much more to offer. The only particularly rewarding feature of this record is the quite amusing cover of Otis Redding's Fa Fa Fa (sad song) and the lyrics which were translated into Hassanija abd back into English in the liner notes. Reading Otis brought through calssaical Arabic might be worth the purchase price. Get Dimi Mint Abba her recordings are 5 star stunning
Malouma is Good for the SoulI've been listening to various Mauritanian music for decades, since my sojourn in Senegal. Malouma's CD 'Desert of Eden' provides the listener with a broader sense of the variety and complexity of Mauritania than other releases by musicians from this country. The record label (Shanachie) also includes more helpful liner notes for the inquisitive listener. It's a very good find.
Great CD- best CD from MauritaniaI would have to disagree with the previous reviewer that recommends buying a Dimy cd instead. Desert of Eden is more powerful, more accessible to listeners, and the CD has more variety than my recordings of Dimy. I haved lived in Mauritania for two years and gone to concerts by Dimy and Malouma. If I only had one Mauritania CD to buy, it would be Malouma's Desert of Eden.

Five artist sampler offers great valueThis is the second annual sampler disc which promotes the Africa Fete concert held each year at Kennedy Center. 1999's festival featured blues performer Taj Mahal w/ kora player Toumani Diabate from Mali, Senegal's Baaba Maal, ToumaniDiabate in Kora duet with Ballake Sissoko, kora player Kaouding Cissoko, and Oliver Mtukudzi from Zimbabwe. Each artist offers a single from their latest album as well as a bonus track only available on this release. Its a great value! All the artists are excellent and the recordings are clean but not over-produced. Enjoy!
