South Africa music review Good News by Abdullah and Mbizo
Pianist Abdullah "Dollar Brand" Ibrahim series of duets with the late great South African bassist Johnny Dyani captures the energy and virtuosity of first class African and jazz giants conversing in the esoteric language of the ancestors. The album manifests Abdullahs' religious beliefs but do not take away from the music. Abdullah doubles on flute, with mbizo on cow bells, both in vocals call, and Africa answers. True Giants, a must have.

  • Mandela (Bring Him Back Home!)
  • Grazin' In The Grass
  • Lady
  • Until When
  • Languta

  • Ha Le Se (The Dowry Song)
  • Stimela (The Coal Train)
From the beginning of his career, trumpeter and flugelhorn player Hugh Masekela has bridged the divides between pop, jazz, and his native South African music. He'll always be remembered for his 1968 multiplatinum hit "Grazin' in the Grass," but his 40-year career has been a fruitful one. Recorded live in 1993 at Washington, D.C.'s Blues Alley, Hope finds Masekela in fine form. He's celebrating, playing with an African band for the first time in more than three decades. As such, we're regaled with tunes from the entire spectrum of his career--everything from the pop ("Grazin'") to the political ("Mandela"), with a cover of Fela Kuti's "Lady" thrown in for good measure. Although it is almost too polished sounding, the eight-piece band is hot, working through the set with outstanding musicianship, particularly on the part of the drummers. A fine portrait of a great artist simply doing his thing, Hope is a good starting point for the curious and a touchstone for the longtime fan. --Tad Hendrickson

South Africa music reivew His best cuts here are rooted in marabe traditions.
Hugh Masakela crosses over into pop and mixes South African music with pop and his usual jazz roots: this makes him much more accessible than the usual jazz trumpet work - and makes his latest cd HOPE shine.

South Africa music review Great Live Recording...
I stumbled onto this album in a Tower store years ago. I've since listened to it many, many times. I agree that Hugh's not too esoteric here and the quality of the live recording is spectacular. This is a great first album for anyone wanting to sample Hugh Masakela.

South Africa music review Live genius
This album of well known South African songs was recorded live at the Blues Alley in Washington with an array of great South African jazz musicians like Themba Mkize, Lawrence Matshiza and Bakithi Khumalo. Masekela is a master of the horn, his virtuosity brilliantly demonstrated on the brilliant tracks Stimela (Train), Grazin' In The Grass and Ntyilo Ntyilo. Other standout track tracks include Nomali, Marketplace, Fela Kuti's Lady and the Miriam Makeba composition Abangoma. The atmosphere is wonderful and the rhythms are superb. This warm, heartfelt music should appeal to all lovers of jazz and African crossover music. I wish I were there.

South Africa music review GORGEOUS AFRICAN HARMONIES - WORLD MUSIC LOVER ALERT!
The chant Shosholoza has haunted me since viewing a performance in the movie Dingaka many many years ago. I was thrilled to find it included here (and also on the equally enjoyable Gumboots soundtrack CD) and it's just as inspiring as I remembered it. Better still, every track is enjoyable. I've been disappointed by other excursions into World Music, but this is a pleasure through and through. The African language tracks are very soothing in a vibrant upbeat way, and the English language cuts I'll Take You There, Oh Happy Day, etc are very nicely done. If you like World Music but are unfamiliar with this group, give it a try. I took a chance on this, and also on Classic Tracks by the same group, and both are outstanding. I look forward to collecting the rest of their ouevre, as fast as my budget will allow.

South Africa music review Beautiful South Africa
This CD combines South African beat and language with jazzy and moody melody. Ladysmith hits it right off with "Once in a Blue Moon" and keeps you humming along with "Shosholoza" and "O Happy Day". This music is a delight to listen to and gives the listener a picture of the beauty of South Africa and its people.

South Africa music review Wonderful joy ! reissue it now!
The best way to describe this tremendous work (which i had to buy as an lp because the cd edition is completely gone) is to imagine a group of free-ish jazz players coming down the mountain and meeting with their more folk oriented partners in Capetown and having a blast playing together. This has Harry Miller (bass) , Mongezi Feza (trumpet), louis Moholo (drums) and Pukwana (Sax) playing south african jazz and it just fills the air with joy and freedom. Great stuff!!

South Africa music review Exciting, Soulful African Jazz
In the Townships is one of my all-time favorite jazz albums--and with a collection of more than 1,000 recordings, that's saying a lot! The compositions are often riff-based, with layers of polyrhythms and melodic complexity added on top. There's outstanding improvising by tenor saxophonist Pukwana, the great trumpeter Mongezi Feza, and others associated with the Chris MacGregor/Brotherhood of Breath contingent. It's amazing to think that this album was released in 1973. It still sounds so fresh and exciting that it will always be brand-new in my ears. When I moved, this CD was mysteriously lost. I can't live without it, so I'm ordering another one!

South Africa music review they send wise messages
Very original. Yet the messages are more human than any songs I have ever heard.

For example, the song Paulina
"..get away from those who want to
touch touch
kiss kiss
and then they leave you.."

Or in That's Why I choose you
"..Everybody is free,
You can do what you like.."

Ladysmith Black Mambazo encourage freedom, democracy. They revere their free South Africa. I belive the one who created the band has won a Nobel Peace prize. I am not well versed in music. But seems like a combination of styles. The most striking feature is the lack of instruments, it is music made of pure voices. They sing in a lot of languages, and in English. Most of their songs are religious though, rooted in the cristian or african morality.

South Africa music review Infectious!
I picked up a used tape of this album on a class field trip in the 11th grade many years ago. I had no idea what I was buying... but the passion, longing, joy and sorrow that poured out of my old walkman made me a life-long devotee to searching out the best of what the world has to offer musically. Imagine a 16 year old girl dancing along to this with headphones on in the Smithsonian more than 10 years ago... you really can't ask for a better recommendation.

South Africa music review Crystalline fretwork delights
I've always enjoyed Bau's musicianship on Cesaria Evora's albums. It is wonderful to be able to focus on his fretwork and enjoy it's crystalline purity. His playing here is even crisper and more fluid than when he is adorning vocals. He meets the challenge of stepping out as the lead voice. This is a very enjoyable album.

South Africa music review An Mbaqanga Treat
The Soul Brothers had been producing hits in South Africa for twenty years before they brought out this album, and this shows in the measured composure of their sound. Their compositions are based on an infectious formula which they tend to stick to, but that doesn't take anything away from the appeal of the album. What stands out is the original use of the Hammond organ by Moses Ngwenya, and perhaps one of the mellowist horn sections on the continent (Thomas Phale & Javas Magubane). Mix these with a driving bass and rippling guitar lines to underpin the harmonious vocals and its easy to see why they're such an enduring favourite in the townships. Check out AMAPHUTHA (track 5), to sample the exquisite poise of this soulful group. And don't forget to heed the lyrics of UTSHWALA (TRACK 8):"Stop getting drunk because you mess around with other people's wives and get into trouble". Solid advice; solid music...
