As with other Ellipsis Arts releases, African Lullaby is more than a stellar music collection. Its delightful liner notes provide ample context for these "love songs for children" and the collection's innovative earth-friendly packaging is a work of art unto itself. Commencing with the bewitching Zulu harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, "Thula Mtwana" sets the tone, creating an atmosphere of warmth, safety, and peace, and is followed by a baker's dozen that reflect the gentle rhythms of an abundantly diverse continent. "Kounandu Deni" marries the dancing melody of Malian guitar and African harp with lyrics of paternal providence. Broadway's Sarafina! and The Lion King cast member Ntomb'khona Dlamini wails soulfully on "Thula Thula," and "Chitsidzo" is a mystical reverie of parental love and spousal longing accompanied by the intense beauty of a mbira (thumb piano). Standing head and shoulders above others in its class, African Lullaby is testimony to the awesome power of music. --Paige La Grone

Uganda music review love this CD!
i listened to this while pregnant, then while nursing. now we listen to it at bedtime, and sometimes in the car. the music is so beautiful and soothing, it's one of my favorites in any category.

Uganda music review You don't need a baby to enjoy this
This is a great CD and I often listen to it without my child around. I've even played it when we have company and they comment on it being good. The music on this CD is very similar to some of the African influenced music on Graceland. Other CDs in the series are as good.

Uganda music review Fantastic!
I received this cd as a gift from a friend for my 5 month old daughter. We listen to it every night as part of our bedtime ritual. She loves it and I probably enjoy it at least as much. A very nice alternative to the routine lullaby cd's out there!

Uganda music review The Voice Transcendant
Only a listen to this incredible and sublime collection with convince noise-weary ears and world-heavy souls of the healing power of the human voice.

I would love to hear a collection of this type which featured the voices of African women like Angelique Kidjo and Miriam Makeba.

Get it. You'll revisit it over and over.

Uganda music review Profound sound.
Ive had this album for four years, I still listen to it on A weekly basis and never tire of it.It's very soul stirring, the first of the songs kothbiro is the most haunting of all of them.Dala and ondiek are my next favourites.
It's a wonderful album to have when life gets very chaotic and busy,it stops you right in your tracks.Highly reccommended as an introduction to the very wide scope of african music.

Uganda music review Uplifting
I heard this CD when visiting Bogota. I walked into a gallery of the local artists and the music captured my soul. I was so moved by the melodies, I had to find out the title of the CD. The music is transcendent. My favorites are Kothbiro, Ondiek and Sutu Kun, and the invigorating, rythmic Ekbobo. But the best has to be the Wasuze Otya track with the laughter of the singers at the end of the track; you can sense their joy in their songs. The music is so uplifting and premeates with a positive feeling -- you can tell that the singers feel joy in living, and in life through the range of wonderful music; you want to go to their land, and be in their space. Wonderful!!! A must have!!!

Uganda music reivew Exploring his roots??
Geoffrey Oryema is a relatively new artist for me. I became a fan of his work from a music sampler (song was Market Day- another album). I bought 3 of his albums, this being the last...I was not disappointed. I found this album a bit different from Night to Night and Beat The Border, meaning it had some more "traditional sounding" stuff on it. By that I mean stuff I deem as more traditional African music via beat and style. Not bad, but not what I love about G. I fell in love with the somber low voice of Geoffrey, and this album continues that style. I am glad I found him as an artist, and this album continues to solidify him as a wonderful and powerful singer. Simple can be better! If you have any of his albums and want more this is a great addition to your collection.

Uganda music review It will make you smile and cry
This was one of the first Realworld releases I listened to and is also one of my favorites. Oryema has a smooth voice that covers a lot of emotion. This recording has a lot of "traditional" feel to it with the enhancement of Peter Gabriel and Daniel Lanois. Makes it a little more atmospheric, I guess. Oryema makes the upbeat songs sound so joyous. With the sad songs, you can hear his sadness over the turmoil in his homeland. This is a great album to settle into and marinate with awhile.

Uganda music review A haunting classic
This is my all-time favorite CD of African popular music. The tracks are alternately infectious and uptempo, and deeply moody and sorrowful -- apparently informed by Mr. Oryema's heartsickness over the political turmoil in his homeland. The result is a consistently tasteful and affecting blend of cultural influences that has remained a top fave on my CD rack for many years. (I actually played it for my boyfriend, a musician, on our first date, and we've been together almost ten years -- he found it to be a revelation as well.) I haven't felt quite the same connection with Mr. Oryema's later work, but "Exile" is a gem.

Uganda music review Superb don't miss out
Arguably one of the best albums in the world. Mellow yet diverse. Semite virtuosity as a musician and singer astound and enfold. This album is the best in the series of fabulous albums made by a man who has been able to carrying the energy and heart of Africa to the shores of America.

Uganda music review We love this album.
This is one of the best albums we've ever owned. The music is very light and full of positive energy, and is easy to appreciate even for people who don't know much about African music (like us). In fact, almost every time we've played this at work, someone new asks who this is and says how great it sounds.

Uganda music review Great Stuff!
Not much to say other than what's been said. I really love this CD and will be looking to buy more of Samite's work very soon. Just wonderful lighthearted folky jazzy african music.

Uganda music review One of my lifetime top ten favorites.
Happy, soothing, uplifting, makes you want to dance. Fresh, genuine, charming and unpretentious. I take it with me on otherwise annoying business trips, listen to it in city traffic, while doing errands, etc.

Uganda music review The CD has excellent creations.
This is the most relaxing African music I have ever heard. If you enjoy Kenny G, this is the African version of Kenny G. Good job

Uganda music review Beauty for the Ear
Unfamiliar with African music, unsure about a CD in a language you don't understand? Go ahead and try this anyway! This cd was the disc that forced me to go out and get a player oh so many years ago. It is absolutely beautiful, and lyric without the need to understand the words of the songs (how I wish that I did!). I'm afraid I do not know how traditional Samite is considered to be, or how original. Either way however, to my western ear his sound is well rooted in the richness of experience. Sweet, sad, soothing or joyous, it is never cloying or irritating. Although it is not a boisterous CD, rather soft really, I find that I can not use it as background noise because it always quitely draws my attention. Good music for weaving or potting plants, but not writing letters! This CD accomplishes a universality that I suspect many new age artists are seeking, but utterly without that awful vague formlessness or aimlessness that tends to pass for ephemeral in more consciously intellectual musical expressions. Highly recommended! (by me at least!)

Uganda music review GEOFFREY ORYEMA'S DAZZLING SPIRIT
Spirit marks Oryema's move from Peter Gabriel's Real World label to Sony Int'l (France). One of the most invigorating listens from this great artist, includes a cover of The Talking Heads' "Listening Wind," (written with sometime collaborator Brian Eno). Very, very tough to highlight two or three favorite songs as they are each right on the mark. Help spread the word on this guy.

Samite, who hails from the East African nation of Uganda, is that rare multi-instrumentalist can make a flute weep or a simple thumb piano spout epic poetry. As a composer, his works range from spacious idylls to polyrhythmic, dance-inducing charmers. His clear tenor voice, with its soaring falsetto, has the kind of poignant beauty and artful tenderness that made international icons of Milton Nascimento and Vusi Mahlesela. His life has not been easy; he lost a brother under Idi Amin, endured a prolonged exile from his homeland, and is now dealing with the premature passing of his beloved wife, Joan. His reaction, as always, is to sing about his feelings, but while some of the present material is elegiac, it is not so light-textured as on earlier releases. Instead, Samite veers between avowals of longing and resignation, observations about the necessities of life, and even unexpected, healing flashes of humor. --Christina Roden

Uganda music review Puts my soul at rest
This is an excellent album to ease yourself with at the end of the day, or even wake up to on a bright and sunny Sunday morning. I'm fairly unfamiliar with African music, and this was definitely a great way to begin my exposure. I would strongly suggest this album to anyone who can enjoy soothing music without necessarily understanding the words that are being sung. It is very melodic and peaceful and definitely going to maintain regular rotation in my collection. Also, I caught Samite' live, and if you ever have the opportunity, please take it!

Uganda music review Samite's best so far
In TUNULA ENO Samite, the flute-playing, Kalimba-plucking singer/songwriter returns with another group of traditional Ugandan and homegrown songs.
Anyone familiar with Samite's music knows he tends toward mellow, spiritually-uplifting tunes on themes of world peace and understanding, yet they're not sung in English, so the cornball factor never enters into them.
Songs range from very pretty ballad-style tunes to rhythmic shakers. Occasional piano adds a slight jazz touch without getting in the way or distracting from the somewhat ethereal groove.
We'd had varying reactions to Samite's music over the years; from loving his first album to thinking he should have kept it simpler on his later releases.
With TUNULA ENO Samite really pulls it all together: this truly is his best album of songs so far.
Sad to note, Samite's wife was dying of brain cancer during the making of this album; yet somehow no sense of overwhelming sadness permeates the album: mostly, it's the sound of joy.

Uganda music review This albumn woke up a sleeping side of my soul
Ive never heard music like this before. The third song on the alubmn, Tunula Eno, fills me with tears and joy everytime I hear it. Samite fills his music with raw, beautiful emotion and has the uncanny ability to remind the listener of the strength and intense beauty that lies within all of us. This albumn touches deeply.

Music from the Coffee Lands
Released in Audio CD by Putumayo World Music (07 October, 1997)
Amazon base price: $13.99
List price: $15.98 (that's 12% off!)
Used price: $5.99
Buy one from zShops for: $7.95
Artist: Various Artists

Tracks:
  • Guajira Bonita - Julian Avalos
  • Soltarlo - Claudia Gomez
  • Wasuze Otya? - Samite
  • Maria Lando - Susana Baca
  • Below The Bassline - Ernest Ranglin
  • M'Ban Samba - Raimundo Sodre
  • Hanzvadzi - Thomas Mapfumo
  • Dilema - Los Tradicionales Se Carlos Puebla
  • Esa Noche - Cafe Tacuba
  • Gabby Kai - James 'Bla' Pahinui
  • Kothbiro - Ayub Ogada
  • Este Son - Juan Carlos Urena
  • La Milonga De Ricardo En Cha-Cha-Cha - Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca
The artists gathered together here hail from nations and cultures noted for the growing and export of coffee. As with this CD's companion release, Music from the Tea Lands, one senses the possibility of lucrative product tie-ins, but part of the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity and any catchy idea that gets the music out there is a good thing. Like the luscious drink itself, the tunes come in many intensities and flavors, ranging from a light-as-air ditty from Peru, to the more complex vocal stylings of Colombia's Claudia Gomez, to Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's earthy Afro-Cuban Congolese rumba. The album is a lively and fascinating travelogue, making landfall in Cuba, Kenya, Brazil, Uganda, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Peru. As with many other Putumayo projects, aside from its musical pleasures, this set would make an entertaining and educational experience for younger family members. --Christina Roden

Uganda music reivew Not strong enough-this compilation is decaf
If this album is like coffee,it's decaf. It lacks the punch to keep one awake for an early morning drive.I'd be asleep at the wheel.

I used to have this CD,but I took it to a used CD store.

Its few highlights are Susana Baca,Ernest Ranglin,Thomas Mapfumo,James 'Bla'Pahinui&Ayub Ogada. The rest are easy-listening Buena Vista Social Club.

When it comes to Putumayo's themed compilations,I reccomend "Gardens of Eden" (sadly,it's out of print),"Music from the Tea Lands"(EXCELLENT!),"Asian Lounge".I am looking forward to "Music from the Wine Lands"--considering I live in the Wine Country.Hopefully,"Music from the Wine Lands" won't be snooze-inducing like this one.

Uganda music reivew Chill out with a cup of coffee or a Mojito......
Good Putumayo CD. Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!

Uganda music review One of the best world music compilataions I've heard
Amazing collection of songs - not one is a throwaway. If you're looking to break into "world music" the Putumayo collections are a great starting point.
