As with other Ellipsis Arts releases, African Lullaby is more than a stellar music collection. Its delightful liner notes provide ample context for these "love songs for children" and the collection's innovative earth-friendly packaging is a work of art unto itself. Commencing with the bewitching Zulu harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, "Thula Mtwana" sets the tone, creating an atmosphere of warmth, safety, and peace, and is followed by a baker's dozen that reflect the gentle rhythms of an abundantly diverse continent. "Kounandu Deni" marries the dancing melody of Malian guitar and African harp with lyrics of paternal providence. Broadway's Sarafina! and The Lion King cast member Ntomb'khona Dlamini wails soulfully on "Thula Thula," and "Chitsidzo" is a mystical reverie of parental love and spousal longing accompanied by the intense beauty of a mbira (thumb piano). Standing head and shoulders above others in its class, African Lullaby is testimony to the awesome power of music. --Paige La Grone

love this CD!i listened to this while pregnant, then while nursing. now we listen to it at bedtime, and sometimes in the car. the music is so beautiful and soothing, it's one of my favorites in any category.
You don't need a baby to enjoy thisThis is a great CD and I often listen to it without my child around. I've even played it when we have company and they comment on it being good. The music on this CD is very similar to some of the African influenced music on Graceland. Other CDs in the series are as good.
Fantastic!I received this cd as a gift from a friend for my 5 month old daughter. We listen to it every night as part of our bedtime ritual. She loves it and I probably enjoy it at least as much. A very nice alternative to the routine lullaby cd's out there!

If you like the African sound, you will love this CD.This CD will literally give you chills as you hear this group proclaim their love for Christ.
This is a wonderful tape! The Zambian Acapella Choir and also the Zambian Acapella Boys Choir are amazing! Every recording they have put out have been wonderful. The Original Choir did three tapes (including this one) and the Boys Choir did one tape. All are wonderful and I would reccomend them to anyone. The love they have for the lord shows not only in their music, but also on their faces. If you have never heard the Zambian Acapella Choirs, I strongly encourage you to order this tape. You won't be sorry!

Racionais MCs back with a mega-hit CDRacionais MCs pioneered Brazilian hip-hop from the depths of poverty in Sao Paulo's Zona Sul. For all fans of old west coast: this is real gangsta hip-hop. If you have to buy one international rap CD, look no further. I personally like the first CD better... more emotion. "Vida Louca [Parte 1]" may be their biggest hit of all time... my other two favorite tracks on this album are "Negro Drama" and "Vida E Desafio".
Why Brazilian hip-hop is as good as American hip-hop:
1. Do not doubt the production abilities. The beats are tighter than Dr. Dre's, heavy gangsta sh*t, with smooth deep bass.
2. The topics are very uplifting and remain positive for the poor communities, which seems to be missing from American hip-hop these days. The energy is incredible. Get your Brazilian friend to translate the lyrics, and you will see what I mean.

The best groupThis is the new album from the best rap group from Brazil. Altough I think the last one was better than this, this is a collector item. They are more sexist, even violent in this album, strong lyrics and heavy beats created by DJ K-L Jay. Listen and enjoy it.

DELICATE & DELIGHTFULSome African music is a little insistent but this is delicate and delightful. When you learn about Samora Machel, the first president of Mozambique, after whom the album is named, it is even more uplifting. If you're feeling down, you'll soon be dancing listening to this. These boys are good.

Great African Thumb Piano Music! The music you here on this CD is hard to find anywhere else! And the intricate rythms and patterns make it sound ahead of it's time. Hugh Tracey recorded this back when rock and roll was in its infancy and bathrooms and water fountains were still racially segregated!

Off 2 "Zambia"One of the first things to know about the Baby Namboos is that writer/programmer Mike Porter is the cousin of British hip-hopper Tricky. And it was Tricky who encouraged his cousin to create this band, along with some pals. Well, I feel indebted to Tricky for that action.
Their only album, "Ancoats 2 Zambia," is an underrated piece of trip-hop, flavoured with reggae and rap. It's dark, moody, but with its moments of oddness and humor. "I am Tony Guest, I live in Manchester. I go to Bristol now and again to see the skinheads... Oh stop laughin' now," says guest Tony Guest on the intro, as an unseen audience laughs at strange moments.
But things take a less playful turn almost instantly. Singer/designer Aurora Borealis sings the anguished ballad "Hard Times," in a soft, cracked voice that sounds like she's about to cry. Then the Baby Namboos swerve into tribal hip-hop, gothic electrorap, and mournful ballads.
The rest of the album speed by in a blur of mournful singing, trippy soundscapes, and gritty rap over some very heavy beats. Sometimes, as in "Trials and Tribulations," you have both at the same time, with bizarre electronic effects over a subdued rap. And it finally ends with two remixes of the title track: the rappier "Geoff Barrow Remix," and the trippier, more explosive "Dillinja Remix."
The Baby Namboos have been unjustly painted as a Tricky side project. And this Manchester band admittedly does have some intense musical similarities to Tricky's work. But, since Porter ejected his cousin from the studio after a couple of days, the Baby Namboos retain a flavour that is uniquely their own.
Their brand of trip-hop is completely unlike the icier sounds of Massive Attack and similar bands. The Baby Namboos are earthier and more soulful. Above the basic beats, clattersdrums and so on, there's a lot of strong electronica that keeps the album from descending into raw depths. It's tough stuff, and it takes a few listens to really absorb.
A bunch of male vocalists do the rapping exceptionally well, rough and a little playful, laughing in delight as they play their instruments. Aurora Borealis has a voice that recalls the cracked alto of Marianne Faithfull, but it sounds rather weak at times. Similarly, her songs tend to be weaker as well: endless repeats of "Your inner scream haunts me/Your tantalizing taunts me," makes up half of one song. The rap songs tend to be much better: "So if you're offered free new tricks/Accept it with open arms/'Cause there ain't no four leaf clovers/Or no gypsy lucky charms
It's a shame that "Ancoats 2 Zambia" (partly named after a phone book entry, partly after a part of Manchester) sank down with many of the less worthy trip bands of that era. Dark, brooding, and rough around the edges.

funky funk for your mind globulesthis cd can seem harsh and uneven at first hearing, but by just the second listen I realized this packs in some really innovative stuff, it has a semi-nineties feel at times and weaves together quite a flowing and weaving of compositions. Darkly futuristic, gripping and apocalyptic but not without its bubbly bounces, I just discovered this cd in the year 2005 and it was made a bit ago but it really sounds entirely more refreshing than most things I hear today...I recommend it if you are bored in this genre and need something new.
Sadly OverlookedBy the time this was released in 1999, both the music press and audience had mostly given up on the trip-hop genre that had provided countless watered down imitations of the original greats. I am guessing that is why no one payed attention to the idea of Tricky's relatives / friends forming a band and releasing a trip-hop album.
What a mistake; This album is a classic. Alternately fun and spooky, this is musical voodoo at its best. The production is top notch, with deep bass lines, snapping beats, and creative keyboard work laying the foundation for the cast of vocalists. Parts of the album have a very loose, jam session feel, and this adds to the odd and enigmatic mood created. From the rolling go-go of "Get Your Head Down" to the haunting "Holy", there is plenty to enjoy here.
Do yourself a favor and check this one out.
Recommended listening - loud, and late at night.
