Artist: Loreena McKennitt
Tracks:
- Prologue
- The Mummers' Dance
- Skellig
- Marco Polo
- The Highwayman
- La Serenissima
- Night Ride Across The Caucasus
- Dante's Prayer
McKennitt's recordings always have the quality of a spiritual sojourn; her songs are those of a seeker, whether she's setting Yeats, Scripture, or her own words to her compositions. It's this that attracts people to her music, and The Book of Secrets is no exception, whether it's the lazy rhythms of "Marco Polo," the sober joy of "The Mummers' Dance," the poignancy of "Skellig" or "Dante's Prayer," or the drama of Alfred Noyes's "The Highwayman." "The Highwayman" is a particularly strong effort, especially in comparison to her earlier setting of "The Lady of Shalott"; McKennitt has become much more skilled at musical narrative. This is music that can be enjoyed on many levels, from McKennitt's growing skill as a composer to the deeper questions posed by her lyrics. --Genevieve Williams

Loreena McKennitt - The Book of SecretsAwesome! Her best compilations. Use constantly for meditation, drifting off to sleep, and love-making. The combination of Celtic, Mediteranean, and Arabic instruments, themes, and melodies is sensational! Have given copies to siblings, off-spring, and close friends as gifts. All comment on their satisfaction. A must have for personal music libraries!
Loreena McKennitt- One of the best modern songstresses of our time Loreena has a pure talent for weaving melody music and words together. Her song The Highwayman is absolutely astounding to be able to put the old poem into music melody and verse is quite amazing
It leads you to a magical worldThe first time I heard Loreena's music I was with my best friend at the University, ten years ago, trying to escape from the burdens of the world. He gave me a copy of "The Visit" and I loved every song. I didn't hear from Loreena again until February 2001, when I came into a music store and, by instinct, I bought a copy of "Book of secrets". This gorgeous piece of art transported me to a magical and enchanted place. It was like to be born again in some fantastic land lost between the memories of my childhood and the beginning of my adulthood as Loreena's crystal voice starts surrounding your soul in a soft and lovely atmosphere. "The Mummer's dance"-one of my favorite pieces-is strongly linked to the most important and clue moments of my life. Every time I feel in a crossroad I play this song, close my eyes and, immediately, everything comes back to its original place.

Pink Moon is the sound of Nick Drake cracking up. That's not exactly true--some have long thought that his death by an overdose of an anti-depressant was an accident, and not suicide--but this album, recorded over two late nights, certainly sounds like a fever dream. Peter Buck of R.E.M. has called the album "Like an English version of (Robert Johnson's great blues) `Hellhound on My Trail.'" The lyrics to the title song read in their entirety: "Saw it written and I saw it say, pink moon is on its way. None of you will stand so tall, pink moon is gonna get ye all. And it's a pink moon." Aside from a splash of piano, the only instrumentation on this stark and spooky collection is Drake's eloquent acoustic guitar. --John Milward

A beautiful albumA friend of mine told me about this album many years ago. My friend was also suffering from major bouts of depression and taking a lot of anti-depressents. He told me how the song "From The Morning" helped him when he heard the lyrics " I can't think of words. I feel no emotion about anything. I don't want to laugh or cry. I'm numb-dead inside". He discovered he wasn't alone in feeling nothing because of the medication. This album works in so many ways. It's one you can listen to at any time and it fits. The first time I heard the whole thing was while driving on the interstate in my car late at night. Perfect. Drake could have been right up there with the premiere singer songwriters of his day had he lived to record more music. Bottom line, I love this CD!
great.does anyone need say more about nick drake? no. but i will anyway: this is a really, really great album, best listened to after dark, best listened to... well, just best listened to period. so get it. listen to it. life can be good with songs like these in it.

Forty years after the Clancy Brothers found popularity singing traditional Irish folksongs to an American audience, along comes the Irish Tenors, the trio of John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan. Backed by plenty of coverage on public television, the three tenors perform a soothing and nostalgic mix of Emerald Isle tunes--from "Danny Boy" to "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," along with a few surprises. Recorded live at the Royal Dublin Society Main Hall with a light orchestra, the album gives each of the three vocalists his chance in the spotlight. Fans of John McDermott should be sure to seek out the artist's solo discs such as Remembrance, which are far more intimate (and musically diverse) fare. --Jason Verlinde

The Irish Tenors / McNamara, McDerrnott, Kearns, TynanI love the Irish Tenors. You can understand every word that they sing and their voices are just beautiful. The Cd is very patriotic and the song are very well known. I grew up listening to most of these, but did not know some of the words until I listened to this CD.
Wonderful.
Wonderful.
PerfectThis is one of the few albums that never fails to make me cry. It expresses so many true and real emotions and does it such a beautiful way that if you don't feel anything when you listen to its songs, you have ice water in your veins.
Buy it and play it for your SO or for yourself. Let it move you and it will.

The Best!!!I've had this for several years and am rebuying because the original now has a skip. I LOVE THIS CD!!! It has so many great songs I don't know where to begin. Anthony Kearns voice is absolutely beautiful. I still can not listen to Boolavogue with out crying. If you know anything about Irish history you'll understand. Also Danny Boy, Voyage, Grace, hell I just put this on when I need a good cry!!! But also Go Lassie Go and Girl From Claire make me smile. Irish music either makes you laugh or cry nothing in between!!!!! And this CD is one of the best!

Tracks:

- Bonny Portmore
- Between the Shadows
- The Lady of Shalott
- Greensleeves
- Tango to Evora
- Courtyard Lullaby
- The Old Ways

Mixing a variety of styles with a Celtic base, this was McKennitt's breakthrough album and remains one of her most musically interesting. "All Souls Night" begins the album, with dance-like rhythms and McKennitt's wonderful voice singing about the Celtic New Year. Other features include a musical setting of Tennyson's "Lady of Shalott", which, while not as sophisticated as Noyes' "The Highwayman" on The Book of Secrets, is an enchanting listen. There's also an interesting rendition of "Greensleeves" and the Spanish-flavored "Tango to Evora", as well as the haunting "Courtyard Lullaby" and the wistful "The Old Ways". A setting of words from Shakespeare's Cymbeline closes the album, which focuses thematically on life, death, and the borders between them. --Genevieve Williams

the visit / loreena mckennittarrived in good condition, cd is in perfect shape. I love her style of music and this cd is one of her best. Thanks for many hours of music bliss.
Loreena reigns SupremeI am of Scotish descent. I look for my countryman's music and cherish it. When I discovered Loreena I was awestruck - I saw her on a PBS special and could not get my pen out fast enough to write down her name. As soon thereafter as possible I was out to the music stores looking for her. I bought everything I could get my hands on! Her music is timeless (and some songs have the pipes which just reach into my Scotish heart and make me cry - love them!). Her voice makes me weep too - it is the most beautiful voice, the clarity - aw. I also bellydance as a hobby and for exercise and found many of her boisterous songs to be quite satisfactory for that - especially with the drums and all! She makes you dance, makes you weep, makes you dream, makes you think. It is such an experience. Nothing like it exists! Love, Love, Love, Loreena!
A rare giftI am by no means an expert on Loreena McKennitt's works. I own just this album and her most popular album The Book of Secrets. Although The Book of Secrets made Ms. McKennitt popular because of the song The Mummer's Dance, which received air play on even some popular music stations, The Visit contains some wonderful songs.
All Souls Night is a quick song about the ancient Celtic holiday Samhain. The pagans believed that on October 31st, the last day of summer, the spirits of the dead wandered the landscape looking for bodies to inhabit. The living lit bonfires, sang songs, and dressed in scary costumes to frighten away the dead. If you let your mind wander, this song can almost transport you to ancient Ireland. Historians know so little for certain about ancient pagan beliefs, McKennitt's well-studied songs and lyrics help bring this lost culture back to life.
The Lady of Shalott is the masterpiece of this album. Adapted from the poem by Alfred Tennyson, McKennitt sets it to music and brings the poem to life. Over 11 minutes long, McKennitt deleted hardly a word of the original poem, yet the music and intonation rivet the listener's attention. The poem is about a spirit or elfish woman drawn to the ancient mythical city of Camelot by the beauty of the castle and Sir Lancelot. Even the way McKennitt pronounces the word Camelot in the song conveys the sacred nature of this most important legend in English mythology. The poem and the song will touch your heart. For me, as I watch modern England quickly losing it's historic culture, this song serves as a reminder of the England that once was.
McKennitt adapts another long poem from English Literature in her later album The Book of Secrets. McKennit faithfully puts the word of Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman into a heart-wrenching song. Again, over 10 minutes long, this is a formula McKennitt does very well.
If I had to choose just one album by Loreena McKennitt, it would be The Book of Secrets. But it would be a cruel choice to have to make. I look forward to someday owning all of her works and anxiously await her next recording.

Van Morrison went a long way towards defining his wild Irish heart with his first two classic albums: the brooding, introspective Astral Weeks (1968), and the expansive, swinging Moondance. If the first was the work of a poet, its sequel was the statement of a musician and bandleader. Moondance is that rare rock album where the band has buffed the arrangements to perfection, and where the sax solos instead of the guitar. The band puts out a jazzy shuffle on "Moondance" and plays it soulful on "These Dreams of You." The album includes both Morrison's most romantic ballad ("Crazy Love") and his most haunting ("Into the Mystic"). "And It Stoned Me" rolled off Morrison's tongue like a favorite fable, while "Caravan" told a tale full of emotional intrigue. Moondance stood out in the rock world of 1970 like a grownup in a kiddie matinee. --John Milward

Just short of a masterpiece.A very relaxing album from Van, with plenty of great songs. Example? Try the opening one-two punch of And It Stoned Me and the title track, two of Van's most popular songs. But wait! Don't go away yet. There's also Caravan, a song that SHOULD be a classic but isn't quite, as well as Crazy Love and Into the Mystic, two songs I like but not as much as the first two and Caravan. It really is a shame about side two, since one song rises above the average level: Brand New Day, with a joyful chorus.
Oh well. Even if you have the best-of, it's still worth it for Caravan, Crazy Love and Into the Mystic.

One of the all time greats in his finest formVan Morrison's Moondance is a great, soulful record from one of the best of the late 60's and early 70's. Featuring his finest collection of songs, the album has a little bit for everyone. Romantic songs like "Moondance" and "Crazy Love" as well as energy-filled tunes like "Caravan" and just great songs like "And it stoned me" help to make this one of the finest collection of songs ever assembled.
Great MusicThis is early Van Morrison and Great Blues from a Well Traveled Artist. I recommend you add this to your collection if your a Real Blues collector.

Musicians have been fusing traditional Celtic music with rock & roll since the '60s, but few have done it as successfully as the Canadian band Great Big Sea. Rant and Roar is the band's sixth CD, and it's designed to introduce them to U.S. audiences by presenting the best songs from two of their earlier releases, Up and Play. Unlike most Celtic-rock fusion bands, Great Big Sea eschew electric guitars and synthesizers in favor of acoustic guitars and traditional instruments like bodhran, bouzouki, fiddle, flute, and whistle. But on tracks like "The Old Black Rum," a rousing drinking song in the Dubliners tradition; the moving ballad "General Taylor"; or their cover of R.E.M.'s "End of the World," their instrumental prowess and powerful vocals more than make up for the lack of electric instruments. Not only have Great Big Sea scored hits with previously archaic song forms like sea shanties, drinking tunes, and ballads, they make these old songs rock. --Michael Simmons

Just the tip of the iceberg but a good place to start...If you really want to know what these guys are all about...see them live when they come to your area...this is a compilation for the US of their second & third Canadian releases, and is just a taste of what they do. Road Rage, their live CD...or the Great Big DVD & CD is an even better representation of these fun loving Newfoundlanders. I've been to four of their live shows in the Burlington VT area since 2002 and I'm ready to see them again when they come to Lebanon NH in the fall of '06. Live in concert is the way to truly experience these guys. They love what they do and it shows. If you can't get to one of their shows, at the very least, get this and then the live albums, and by all means, keep going till you have them all (there are eight). Alan Doyle, their lead singer, puts it this way: "We're not a band you come to see or hear. Great Big Sea is something you do." Audience participation only gets them going even more, and it's impossible not to get caught up into it. Whoever said they were "annoying and cloying after a few listens" needs to learn how to cut loose and have a great time. These guys are the real deal!
"Got The Sun And The Sky, All The Water Surrounds Me!"Come in, take off your hat and coat and grab a seat near the fire. Order a pint of 'screech' and relax, the music is about to begin. Welcome to Newfoundland!
'Rant And Roar' is a fun, rollicking CD by the Great Big Sea, four native Newfoundlanders who draw their inspiration and music from a unique and rich cultural heritage. English, Irish, Scottish, French and who knows what else come together with a flair that reminds us all of what the "Old World" was like in simplier times.
Though I'm not a native Newfoundlander I have spent numerous summer's there visiting the maternal side of my family. In my youth I've walked up and down Saint John's fishing docks listening to my Grandfather barter in Portugese with fisherman for the best price on the catch of the day and watched the icebergs float by while standing atop Cabot's Tower on the hillside overlooking Saint John's Harbor. All the pleasant memories of the time I've spent there is embodied in this wonderful music. Come with me to other time, another place and sing the type of songs your Grandparents sang. Songs of love, songs of life, songs for drinking and a dirge or two thrown in for good measure. Just be sure to bring your stomping shoes if you got any!
My Highest Recomendation!!

One of the best.If you like traditional Irish music that has grown with the times, this is for you. The album moves along at a great pace and there is just enough of Irish tradition to make you feel right at home. Don't try to drive while listening and singing along unless you have your cruise control set!

Born Eithne Ni Bhraonain, this classically-trained pianist was kid sister in the musical family that became Clannad, joining the Irish band in 1979 but dropping out amicably three years later to pursue her own muse. This music, produced in the mid-'80s as the soundtrack to a BBC series, was released as her debut in 1987 and promptly ignored--yet its mix of atmospheric soundscapes and Enya's lush, layered vocals, sung in both English and Gaelic, is the template for her subsequent global hits, beginning with Watermark the following year. --Sam Sutherland

KeltsIt does not matter for me what people say about Watermark. The Celts is still Enya's masterpiece.
BeautifulI see the reviews from some that they really seem to hate this cd. That is really to bad. I love it. But I'm the type that likes to have soft beautiful music play low while I work. I have not found any of her work that I don't like. I like my rock and roll but there is a time and place for that music too.
