International music review Wonderful!!!!!
First offI wantto say that I bought Un Poco Mas in Walmart for only 6.96 so that was a great deal to me. This is my second cd I have gotten from MDO. I bought it because I heard Dame Un poco mas on Tv on one of my spanish music channels and I fell in love with that song. The whole cd is fanstic. The first cd I got from MDO was in christmas of 2000 and that cd was Subir Al Cielo. And that was also A great cd from them but Un poco mas is 25 times better. Thank You.

International music review MDO Rocks!
This is a fantastic CD & I would seriously recomend it to anyone. It was the 2nd Spanish CD I'd ever bought & I fell in love with Latin music after hearing this CD. I would tell anyone who wants a good Latin CD to get this one! ;-)

International music review Latin pop by a talented vocal group
"Un Poco Mas," by MDO, is an excellent collection of Latin pop by this male vocal group (a quartet when they made this CD). The songs are a mix of faster-tempo dance/pop songs and ballads. One song ("No puedo olvidar") even appears in both pop and ballad versions. MDO also seems to be aiming for that English-speaking crossover audience. Although most of the songs are in Spanish, one appears in both Spanish and English versions ("Dame un poco mas"/"Groove with Me Tonight"), and the CD ends with a second English-language selection ("Fantasy").

The vocal arrangements feature an effective mix of solo parts and group harmonies. The guys' voices sound excellent, and they perform each of the songs beautifully. Fans of the "Latin pop" sound won't want to miss this CD.

International music review overall very good, but missing an important song...
I enjoy listening to this cd, but i am surprised that willy
Chirino left out the song LAMENTO CUBANO,a song from the MachAdo
period of the 1930's and which I find so perfect to describe
the Cuba of today.
To my pleasant suprise this song was included in the film
DIRTY DANCING HAVANA NIGHTS, where it was sung by DONATO,
Yet, I can find no explanation why it was left out of the
soundtrack of the film. Next time you warch the movie, you will
hear this song in the street scene when the american girl meets
the Cuban guy.
Willy, next time you record a CD, please include the song LAMENTO CUBANO, if possible in a duo with DONATO. It's a pity
we can not get a copy of this song as it was performed in the film.
Thank you, willy CHirinos, for this Cd.

International music review great place to start with Cuban music
This is clearly Willy Chirino's best. His next best does not even come close. He is a little controversial and is completely banned in Cuba as a Florida right-winger. But I talked to Cubans in Cuba and those particular folk, who are knowledgeable, love this CD and know about the songs on it, although they don't really own CDs much and CD playing boomboxes are a luxury. As for me, I'm not a Cuban--as if that matters--but in things Cuban, sometimes such a disclaimer is demanded. This CD was an early acquisition that put me on the right track. This is not the best Cuban music there is, but its very, very good and accessible for non-Cubans and very rewarding, and well done. The overall production is magnificent. Its the best Cuban music that I know of made outside of Cuba in a generation. And I know a little bit about this subject.

International music review Superb Chirino - a CLASSIC
As a Cuban born American, listening to this album has become a deeply enriching, fulfilling experience, offering me the unique opportunity to dig into my roots and share a common bond with my parents' generation, during which time most of these songs became popular. Willy Chirino embellishes each track with utter humanity and syncopating rythmns that will have you dancing in the den! Included are such Cuban classics as "el Manisero" (the "Peanut Vendor") and "Son de la Loma" ("They Come from the Hills") two lovely paeans to the guajiro/farmer lifestyle that percolates through most of our Cuban sounds. Better than Gloria, more accessible than Celia, and richer in scope and sound than Albita, Secada and many others, Willy Chirino puts his trademark energy and vocal prowess to superb use here. A startling, refreshing album that serves as an extension of the Cuban culture.

Excellent! Carlos Vives has done an amzing job in this record I can feel CULTURE every time I listen to it, even my 10 month old baby likes it...Definetly very talented, all the musicians that play with him are good specially the accordionist.I imagine that colombians must be very proud to have such a good artist. Thank you Carlos Vives.

International music review High-Energy Colombian Fun (Llena de Energia!)
Doesn't matter if you don't understand Spanish, if you feel like celebrating, take a listen to this native Colombian sound! Unlike Vives' softer sounds or his latest latin-rock album, this one's pure fun. After 10 years, it's still just as great.

International music review Carlos Vives
I have found it is good to get involved in music that is beyond the narrow sight of the media. This CD has some of the most beautiful forms of Cumbia that originates in the country of Colombia. This dipicts the colture of this beautiful country not to be full of drug lords or what ever else people say but full of love and romance between the people and very strong family ties that shows that we all have things to learn from each other.

I was in colombia several times and each time I was amazed how close to god these people are and how spiritual Cumbia actually is. When translated it causes tears of joy to come to to even the most ignorant teens and convicted felons in search of hope on the streets because of it's impact of praising god and the gifts to humanity he gave and the great love and heart it takes to praise god and his creation of huminity, not through evolution but in 6 days through his love for all of us.

With music so beautiful and coltures out there to explore it is time to enjoy the first step to coltural knowledge. Carlos Vives has the Voice to bring Tears, to you eyes, melt the icy heart and the looks to sweep women off there feet. I wish that you enjoy this CD and it's unique qualities and positive messeges that all teenagers need these days.

International music review Venezuelan pride
Heres an artist that makes us venezuelans very proud!...his songs are universal, the lirics could be understood by any one. What really surprises me is his diversity, being prolific in rithms, and showing once more that he is able to make us enjoy his music. A very particular voice with a better "feeling" singing, makes this album unique, nada es igual a Franco de Vita. The song te veo venir soledad is ranked down here as the first of the top ten.

International music review Exceptional
Te veo venir soledad (Bachata) it's a great song. It's just a great cd especially that song. He's the man.

International music review GREAT! GREAT!
THIS CD IS GREAT!! AND ALEJANDRO'S PERFORMANCE IS GREAT!...WHAT A VOICE!! THE GREATEST VOICE!!!...WHAT A TALENT! YOU'LL FIND A LOT OF VARIETY IN THIS CD...RICH MUSIC...BEAUTIFUL MUSIC...BEAUTIFUL LYRICS...I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD

International music review Lo mas suave que nunca!
I fell into purchasing this disc by listening to a Spanish radio station that was giving Tantita Pena a lot of air time. Like most everyone I kinda cringed, hoping I wasn't being suckered into buying another crummy album for one song.
Let me tell you, this entire album is pure dynamite! From the first song to the last (Las Mananitas, hidden on track 30) every track is first rate. The melodies are each unique and the care in production and delivery is patently obvious.
The origen of each song speaks volumes and who better to deliver the message with power and sincerity but Alejandro!
I would highly recommend Origenes, consider it an investment in fine music.

International music review heheh
I don't even speak spanish and I like the vocals. Damn these foriegn singers have more skillz than britney spears, N'stink and gaystreet boys.

Where have all great american singers gone to? Stop the bubble gum insanity.

International music reivew almost Heaven
Not quite Heaven Up Here full-tilt boogie great but plenty of killer tunes on here for any Bunnies fan. The "go to Iceland" cover shoot reminds those of us who grew up in the '80s as a very bizarre period in Britrock (remember Killing Joke actually moving to Iceland where their career came to a frozen halt?) where bands had this pre-Bjork fascination with all things Icey.

International music review A tense, atmospheric classic
Yet another classic by the Bunnymen, Porcupine has a tendency to be overlooked in favour of Crocodiles, Ocean Rain and Heaven Up Here. Listening to it, it's easy to hear why - much of the album is very claustrophobic, with thick, impenetrable production and gloomy lyrics. Max Bell, who provides the sleeve notes for the recent British reissue of the album, compares he band's experience making the album to 'spending a month in Das Boot'. A sense of tension and entrapment certainly shows in the music, creating a an atmosphere that is much denser than other Bunnymen albums. Personally, I think that it enhances the mood - although it can give you a headache.
Porcupines kicks off with the two 'poppiest' songs on the album, The Cutter and The Back of Love, before plunging into the depths with My White Devil and the quite brilliant Clay, which features a particularly haunting moment with a reverb-laden McCulloch vocal singing 'when I was the Cain, you were the Abel' over some tribal drumming from De Freitas. The title track continues the mood, introducing a haunting synth line into the mix, and building to an energetically miserable climax with a worrying sense of dissonance that typifies the album. The second half kicks off with a lovely modal guitar lick before lurching into Heads Will Roll, which is the catchiest song on the album since The Back of Love, but much more twisted. Ripeness has a slightly repetitive tune, but makes up for it with a fantastically tight, funky rhythm. As always with Porcupine, though, there's more going on, with the subtle use of Eastern-tinged scales giving the song a darker twist. Higher Hell is a musical hybrid of the title track and Clay, and features a clever lyrical inversion of Heaven Up Here. Gods Will Be Gods is an undoubted standout, building to a furious climax over five glorious minutes before suddenly cutting out. In Bluer Skies is the calm after the storm, and a great, melancholy ending to what is possibly Echo & the Bunnymen's darkest album.
This was as far as the band could go in this direction; Ocean Rain was a much lighter, airier effort and has had much more acclaim over the years than the more difficult Porcupine. Repeated listens, however, reveal that this album has just as much to offer as its successor. It was recently named on BBC radio as a 'great lost album'. I think that about sums it up: it's as good as any of their first four, and has an atmosphere all of its own that has never really been equalled.

International music review 'Tis A Pity
Without question my favorite Echo album, if only for the first three songs alone (although the rest are brilliant as well). What a rush. This is the quintessential Bunnymen sound, no holds barred and no waiting.

While they are a great group, I have not liked their more recent reunion albums. This one, however, is one for the ages.

Artist: Hedningarna

Tracks:

  • Varg Timmen
  • Gorrlaus
  • Skrau Tval
  • Pornopolka
  • Raven
  • Sagla Ten
  • Tuuli
  • Tappmarschen
  • Tina Vieri
The album starts with a low growl, building into the menace that becomes "Tass'on Nainen," and you're into the world of Hedningarna, where traditional Swedish instrumentation (and the vocals of Sanna Kurki-Suonio and Tellu Paulasto) meet studio electronics. As dark as anything produced by a goth band, it's a startling record that's pushed the Nordic sound to world music's cutting edge. The fiddles distort evilly; programmed beats blend with a frame drum. While Hedningarna mine territory that other Swedish bands such as Garmarna do, the sound on this record is their own, full and wild and a studio creation that never sounds overproduced. When the guitar cuts loose at the end of "SaglaTen," it becomes obvious that this is really the new and glorious sound of folk-rock, '90s style. The guest joiking by Wimme on "Tuuli" only serves to make the album even more otherworldly, but a passport isn't required. --Chris Nickson

International music reivew Tr -- Quirky, Wild, and Addictive
The 3rd album by Hedningarna, Tr, became their most celebrated and most popular. It features an all out vocal assault from not only the two Finnish singers (Sanna and Tellu) but also by the men as well on Min Skog, Rven, and VargTimmen. Instrumentally, the band combines their unique Scandinavian folk sound with modern rock production and instrumentation.
While the album does contain some of the band's strongest (and most lovingly bizarre) material -- Tuuli, Rven, Tss'on Nainen, and Tina Vieri to name a few -- some of the tunes don't really quite catch fire. It was certainly a groundbreaking album but I don't believe it is their best; Karelia Visa accomplishes that in a more sublime, mature way.
But this album still delivers the heathen roots/rock that makes this group so wonderful -- its a quirky, wild and addictive ride. Certainly worth owning.

International music review Raw, Animalistic, and Addictive
I used to hate this type of music. Having been "brought up" by classical music, rock, and comtemporary film scores-I didn't consider these droning chants to be music at all-since I am more used to more melodious and polyphonic musical forms. My interest in folk started with Irish music, from which a love of drums and mouth music was born. While Irish music is powerful, for the most part it is very fair, calming and at times exuberant. The music of Scandinavia is pure power, raw, animalistic, and illicts the part that is most primal in all of us. It isn't exactly what you'd call a "pleasant listen." This is not for everyone and I usually don't listen to it around family for fear of getting kicked out of the house :) but it is very rousing and the beat and rhythm...like certain African or Native American soundscapes...gives you an interesting drive...like you could conquer all...not a safe thing to listen to if you hate someone...haha...I say this because certain tracks really resonates with emotions that associate with anger...but in a way, it helps you to let it out...

International music review Dark, deep, yet manages to be uplifting
Like the English folk singers of the 1970s, Scandanavia's Hedningarna managed during the 1990s to combine a truly modern aesthetic with the most traditional values evident in their own folk tradition.

Because the folk traditions of Scandanavia are based on the use of wind instruments rather than stringed ones, the sound here is quite different from Fairport Convention or Anne Briggs' a capella folk. Hedningarna managed through their application of modern techniques to the most tradional of Scandanavian folk instruments to produce something that sounded and sounds quite otherworldly. The pipes on the opener "Tssi On Nainen" are so dark and droning that the haunting, serious vocal melody becomes uplifting, whlst the dense rhythms of the following "Min Skog" thrust themselves so far upfront that it sounds like it's played in two eras at once - literally. The angry male vocals sound quite like an aggressive preacher: the effect is so emotional as to be memorable even when a listener cannot understand what is being said.

"Pornopolka" featured the strange yet amazingly heartfelt and rapid-fire rhythms typical of the Finnish language - resulting from its characteristic vowel harmony, and also characteristic of Vrttin's "Katariina" - together with an incredibly strange fiddle melody. The amazing melody of the language allows them to achieve a volume unimaginable in most of the world's languages. "Sglten", on the other hand, featured a melodic yet fitting guitar break that added to the fire of the melodies, whilst "Rven" was so eerie, intimate and unrestrained that it would touch any listener unconsciously.

The last three tracks were even more eccentric. The soft "Tuuli" featured the hypnotic vocals of Wimme Saari over a groove so hypnotic it was danceable; "Tppmarschen", despite the emphasis on the pipes, sounds more like what we would call "folk" than anything, yet winds by its astonishing intimacy even to someone unfamiliar with the language. And "Tina Vieri" sounded almost accessible in its verses yet the melody of the language makes it so surprising that Sanna Kuori-Suoni and Taulu Paulasto can put off such a dark and beautiful piece: the stringed lutes sound like a piano.

In their amazing manipulation of traditional sounds to produce something new, Hedningarna were quite unlike anything most of you would have heard. Hard to understand, but few record will get under one's skin so quickly.

Alejandra Guzman, Mexico's premiere chica rockera, remains a vital and aggressive force on Lipstick, her second collaboration with producer Desmond Child (Cher, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Ricky Martin). Fifteen years into her ever-unpredictable career, Guzman is still searching for that perfect balance of rock 'n' roll spirit and pop sensibility. She seems to have found it on Lipstick which refines the sound she first explored with Child on 2001's Grammy-winning Soy, The prolific producer artfully reins in Guzman's wild-child delivery, surrounding her with glossy instrumentation that still has plenty of her trademark bite. The result is a sexy, smart album, typified in the title track. The song is featured in Spanish and English versions, both of which are perfectly suited to rock radio. Guzman also offers up "Hoy Me Voy a Querer," a faithful cover of underrated grrrl rocker Bif Naked's "I Love Myself Today." Lipstick also features writing contributions from Evan Lowenstein (Evan & Jaron) and "super-duper" soul duo Joss Stone and Betty Wright. In the end, however, it's traces of Guzman herself left all over this alluring, electric record. --Joey Guerra

International music reivew real live!!!
this album has all of their hit songs.
sound is very good. it's their best live performence.

International music reivew If you only can pick one Motorhead CD, get this!
I bought this after slugging my way through NO REMORSE and NO SLEEP 'TIL HAMMERSMITH. I actually debated on getting it after being somewhat let down by those two CDs. I am SOOOO glad I bought it in spite of those feelings!

This is the stuff metal nirvana is made of. For the opening of Iron Fist until the last note (which is quite sustained) of Overkill, it is a non-stop treat for the ears. Many of the classics are here: Bomber, Ace of Spades, Iron Fist, Metropolis, and the like are all here, but better sounding...even more aggressive than before. Throw in fantastic live versions of Orgasmatron, I'll Sing the Blues, and Going to Brazil and you get pure gold. Not that the other songs are just filler. Oh no, this is a barn-burner from start to stop.

My personal fave is the bridge from Iron Fist to Stay Clean. It may have taken Motorhead 20 years to get to the point where song trasitions are that smooth, but it is worth the effort for the listener.

So, if you can only pick one, get this one.

International music review Motorhead-'Everything Louder Than Everyone Else:Live'(CMC)
I remember that I never even knew about the release of this 2-CD UNTIL someone in a record store had stuck it in my hand.Needless to say,I was more than delighted.A running time of at least 100 minutes,I never knew Motorhead played THAT long of set.'Everything...' was recorded live in Hamburg,Germany in May,1998.Includes two songs from their(then)latest studio effort 'Snake Bite Love' which are "Take The Blame" and the ass-kicking "Love For Sale".Just about every tune here rocks,as the older ones tend to stand out some.Like "Iron Fist","Metropolis","No Class","Capricorn","Bomber","Overkill" and their signature anthem "Ace Of Spades".A total of twenty-five headbanging cuts!An amazing live record.I haven't heard "The Chase Is Better Than The Catch" or "Orgasmatron" in ages.Recommended to ALL true metal warriors.
