Skip the Marley collection and get the Bossa Stones cd instead. Great renditions of Stones tunes in Bossa Nova style. The Stones songs really come off well in this style since it is so different from the original style. This is in contrast to the Bossa Marley songs which are not so diff from the original downbeat reggae style, so I suggest avoiding the Marley collection. Just stick with the Stones!

I agree with the other negative reviews above. If you want to hear what sounds like a porn star breathily singing Bob Marley, this is perfect for you. Otherwise, don't waste your money. I could barely make it through the entire CD. And the female artist sounds NOTHING like Astrud Gil. I'll stick to pure Bob and never stray again!

I found this album by mistake and I am glad it happened. The songs were covered in a great fashion, very melllow and yet melodic. Great album to relax and perhaps have a glass of wine.

I'm in the process of getting the complete Stax music catalog, along with the Motown singles from when they were in Detroit to complete my classic R&B collection. But, you need this Atlantic set to know (and listen to) what great music these 3 companies were putting out in the 1960's. (I haven't forgotten Chess at all, I'm going to get their best of selection when I get around to it, since a few good friends of mine in the know recommends them as well.)
Thanks goodness for the 120 GB iPod, because now I can listen to the entire Atlantic collection while I'm at work during my shift!!

This is as good as music gets. The first CD is an introductory one, with some dated material, but once you get beyond the 40's, every song is a winner. This contains several Greatest Hits sets all in one place. Just brilliant stuff, to which I'd give my highest recommendation.

This is an excellent product for anyone who cherishes the
old times when you had to SING a SONG not just repeating
one verse over and over. There are some good hard to find
songs that many of us had probably forgotten until they
start to play and then they do bring back memories. An
excellent gift for anyone over 50 years of age. Old
enough to appreciate good music.

As I have waited many years to purchase this set, I have sampled it from the LP version that it was molded from. First released on CD in the early 80's there were two prior version that were released on LP. The first was started in the mid 60's and was released in the original mono versions for the first few volumes. It was then re-released in the 70's as two volume gatefold albums, also grouped in the first box set that the 8 CD set is modled after. The tracks have remained basically the same over the several releases with the final 8 CD set incorporating all the revisions. The quality of the recordings have been maintained throughout the entire collection without the tinkering that sometimes happens in the process of re-mastering. As I own several of the original recordings from the early 50's, in both the 78 and 45 rpm pressings, along with various reel and cassette releases. The sessions are the correct versions, as were made famous from their era. The history of these selections have maintained their importance in the soundtrack of the American Entertainment with their inclusion in some of the greatest box office releases in the past 4 decades. A little of the Atlantic history can be seen in the movie "Ray", as it was included in the bio of the most well know R & B artist of our lifetime. In addition, the r & r movies made in the early fifties featured the music of the Atlantic Black artist as featured in the first several disc of the collection. Dirty Dancing featured Soloman Burkes "Cry to Me", and many other tracks have been included in major movies over the decades. Every where you turn these tracks are a part of your history. To have them all in this one collection to enjoy endlessly, anytime you wish is worth the cost, whatever price you have to pay. If you were to download each track at .99 each you would pay well over two hundred dollars to burn all of these to CD yourself and you would not have the history that is included in this package. Although I sound like one of the TV ads, I just enjoy this music, I have grown up with it over the last 50 years and I feel it should be a part of any music collection as a part of the American R & B section. Buy it, listen, listen again and you will be overcome with the music, history and all that it has become.

I am very pleased with my purchase of the beautiful music of Celtic Spirit. It is, of course, a rich presentation of vocal and instrumental music in the celtic tradition. The music flows with the soaring spirit of Gregorian chant. Grounded in a traditional foundation of Irish sacred music, it radiates with the centering peace of Sanskrit anjali and the ephemeral mystery of music from the Middle Ages. Celtic Spirit blends these elements together with an air of spiritual mystery and a renaissance of classical grace. The instrumental and vocal melodies flow like a fine wine; a blend of sunlight and forests, rich earth and clean air with the clarity of crystal waters and the fleeting touch of a breeze. This is music to infuse the senses and lift the spirit. The classical training of the musicians and the expertise of their musical performance and interpretation is beautiful to listen to. Celtic Spirit is a musical selection that I will enjoy for years to come.

Though my title says chicano_punk, I have an apreciation for music also. I have a church choir, and I wish they would just sound like the voices ensembled in this album. I usually listen to this cd when I am doing my college work or I need to meditate, it is very relaxing. The vocals in this album are wonderful, and I have to say that it sounds good. I usually dislike songs that are ensembled with instruments, and choir voices, but this cd surely proved me wrong. As my comment said, it sets the ambience as if I am in church though, when I am listening to this cd. You should here the previews on this cd, and hear the voices that I am talking about. This is a great celtic album, and if you want something that is mind relieving, then you should listen to this cd.

The tracks in this album are real good, but like someone mentioned before no "In the air tonight", the song that made Miami Vice famous in the first place (besides the theme). One other song that is not on any of the Miami Vice soundtracks is a song titled Voices by Russ Ballard. This song was played in the Prodigal Son episodes when Crockett and Tubbs were on their way in the speedboat to the Bahamas to arrest Caldarone. Great song but always omitted from any soundtrack.

As others have noted, this is 'a' Best of album, certainly not deeply indicative of five seasons of this 80s show.

Yes, In The Air Tonight, as used in the first season, is often cited as the epitomy of the Miami Vice aesthetic, or 'thing'. And it's missing, as are plenty of other songs. Jan Hammer is only represented by three tracks--two versions of the famous theme, and Crockett's Theme, a rare instrumental hit single. But what about the countless other tracks and cues? The three tracks off the original Miami Vice soundtrack album (white cover) alone are a better value than this, plus you get the Collins track and other 80s time capsule material (Grandmaster Flash, etc). This kind of Best of soundtrack CD is really becoming obsolete in the downloading era--there's nothing special on here you can't find elsewhere these days, one track at a time.

Meanwhile, the Complete Miami Vice 2CD set (all Jan Hammer) is out of print and stupidly expensive, but it's got all of the score. The songs...just go find a listing online or go through the excellent DVD boxes and go find what you need online. There's just not enough on here to do justice to so many slo-mo scenes of Don Johnson in pastels, gun drawn, in a climactic showdown with various Miami druglords and dirtbags.

Good, but not great.

As others have noted, the exclusion of Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" is ridiculous; It's not a 'Best Of' if one of the most iconic songs ever used in the show isn't included! There's plenty of other odd exclusions, too: Russ Ballard's "Voices", Honeymoon Suite's "Bad Attitude", Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms", and Terry Kath's "Tell Me" are the most notable songs absent from this release, and I would have gladly subbed any of them for Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", The Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited", George Thorogood's "Bad To The Bone", Autograph's "Turn Up The Radio" or Sheila E.'s "Glamourous Life". Are those good songs? Sure. But, they don't really come to mind when I think of Miami Vice, not to mention they're all over other 80's compilations and the radio. If we're going that route, at least include Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me".

Even lesser known songs from the show's run would have sufficed: Tommy Shaw's "Girls With Guns" and "Dangerous Game", both of which are excellent songs (and luckily, finally recently reissued on their respective albums: "Girls With Guns" & "Ambition"). Ditto for The Nobodys "No Guarantees", a hard-to-find track. Speaking of rare, Miami Vice's own Don Johnson sang "Streetwise" for his "Heartbeat" album, but cut it from the LP. It's a good song, and was used in season three's also-named "Streetwise". That would have been a great addition. Genesis' "Land of Confusion" used in the final episode, would have been great, as well.

But, even though this disc fails to truly be a "Best Of", it does feature some great tracks. Both of Glenn Frey's oferrings are true MV classics, as is Jackson Browne's "Lives In The Balance". Jan Hammer's instrumentals are cut to three tracks (couldn't have thrown the "New York Theme" or "Candy" in, huh?), but they give a good view of his genius. The MV themes are just as cool as ever, and "Crockett's Theme" is out and out awesome. Steve Jone's "Mercy" is as great as ever. The more mainstream tracks here that I didn't mention above, Tina Turner's "Better Be Good To Me" and Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is", actually work here, though again, why no "Voices"?

You'd be better off buying the official soundtrack and it's sequel (ignore the never-released-in-the-U.S. third soundtrack), as well as Jan Hammer's own "Best of Miami Vice" (cheap and easy to find, much more so that the complete collection) but this serves as a good introduction to MV's music, just not a definitve one. It's pretty obvious this was released to piggyback on the 2006 feature film version, and sadly it plays more like any 80's compilation album than an MV compilation album.

This compilation is better than previous attempts in capturing music, the memories, from key scenes. But as others also note, there are major omissions. Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight", obviously. And what "Vice" junkie could forget the memories evoked by "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits, "Cry" by Godley & Creme, "Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi, "Bad Attitude" by Honeymoon Suite, "Tell Me" by Terry Kath, or even Sheena Easton. Russ Ballard is hard to find anywhere.

Because individuals decide which "Vice" scenes, which music (from a huge cross-section of music from a five year time span during which Jan Hammer and Tim Truman, both magnificent, ran the show), mattered the most, no single collection will be definitive.

In the end, people are best off getting Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice: The Complete Collection" sountrack compilation, and making one's own "hit" collection using song lists from the various "Miami Vice" web site.

I simply enjoyed the European styled fusion-jazz format. It was a worthy purchase and look forward to more of Mark Gorbulew's work in the future.

This is a fair cd. The problem is it is not as good as the first Rendevous Lounge. Round one was a classic with great cut after great cut. Round 2 has good cuts but in my mind none stands out or has a must have quality. As is often the case with movie sequels this cd doesn't compare. However it is not bad as passive background music.

This is a great CD. Each performance has quality song writing, musical voicings and performances. The selections are varied, but related in style and 'energy' so there is great flow.

It is not like some albums which just sample other records and artists, the songs sound Fresh and original. It is also not like 'trance' which repeats one sound/bar/phrase ad nauseum. The selections are varied, but related in style and 'energy' so there is great flow.

Overall, the selections have a sophisticated smooth, brazillian or NY jazz feel. Lots of talent on this CD!

I enjoy this music while walking, working on the computer, doing light chores with my headphones on, or just listening. Great Brunch music on a Sunday morning too!

I had a get together at my place and someone popped this cd in and it's been playing ever since. All tracks are an awesome collaboration of R&B hip hop and Jazz. No, may not be live bands fusing genres. But this is a beautiful piece of work. Very entertaining and great for the grown mature peeps. It's great background music for entertaining and conversating. And oh so great for those chill out days with a glass of wine.

If you are a mature adult who likes new music, jazz, hip hop & R&B then this is the collection for you.
I entertain alot and there hasn't been an audience that has NOT loved this collection. A friend introduced me to Unwrapped Vol. 1 & 2 and I immediately ordered the rest and everything else this label puts out including Jill Scott, Mike Phillips, Brenda Russell & Jeff Bradshaw to name a few.

This is today's music for the today's adult.

it seems like this is the direction that r&b/ hiphop/rap is going now, what happened to the real bands that played real music such as the horn sections, guitar, precussions, drums and vocals that can really get out there. i guess i have matured and prefer mature music. after seeing kem in concert and purchasing his cd,it really makes cds like this sound like a bunch of untalented people behind a computer screen making beats because they cant play instruments and cant hit those difficult notes like the days of old. but... this is just my opinion of what music is today.

This is one of my favorite of the ultra-lounge series of discs. Most everyone is at least vaguely familiar with a few of the tunes on the disc and that helps bring folks in to really listen more closely. Nothing says "I'm having a retro party" like this CD, oysters on the half shell, and rum-based tropical drinks. I'm just sayin'.

This album gets a lot of airplay when I want to sit around with mates and smoke cigars and drink a few scotches. Not sure why, but its just cool.
I'm from Down Under and this album is about as far as you could get from Australia during the 50s/60s period, and that may be it's appeal for me.
The album conjures images of 50s/60s american gumshoe private eye types, smokey bars, and late night alleys from an almost mythical Manhattan setting.
Perphaps one of the best in the Ultra-Lounge Collection (Although Ultra-Lounge, Vol. 1: Mondo Exotica is its rival for that position), and I heartily recommend this album for you late night introspective types out there!

Perhaps not the best of the Ultra Lounge series but Volume Four is still COOL!

From the start of Nelson Riddle's "Theme from Route 66" this album jumps out @ the listener, with this being easily one of the BEST TV themes ever produced, very catchy and very cool, more reminiscent of just a hip lounge piece and is perfect to introduce this package. John Buzon's "Caravan" is another fun spin on what is one of the several out there of this great tune, this one being played a bit like a rhumba! Line Renaud's "Sexe" is nothing special but it's very slick and is a little like something that would have come from the cavern clubs during the beat era. I can't say enough about Lou Busch's jazzy "Cool", adapted from the already jazz-cool Bernstein musical "West Side Story". This is just another good rendition offered, although here instrumental and really pushing jazz solos. Love it! Although "The Beast" may be one of the CDs lesser tunes, an organ jazz piece with a piano backing, it's still really pretty cool and wears on the listener after a few listenings. Theme from "Our Man Flint" is pretty space age bachelor/surf music and one of the more orchestrated pieces on the album. Although Fascinato's "Spring Sprang Sprung" is pretty simple, its simplicity is what makes it just great background music. Its pieces like this that help make these Ultra Lounge releases good for gatherings & parties. "Night Train" is already a driving tune, but in Alvino Rey's hands, it's even more entertaining. I love "Harlem Nocturne", to begin with, and have another cool version of it on one of the other Ultra Lounge(maybe "Rhapsodesia", not sure). The Denny arrangement, though, is very mellow and cool, with a bit of the exotica sound that he made famous. The rest are anywhere from good to a little better, with Jimmie Haskell's "A Shot in the Dark", adapted from the 2nd Clouseau 'pink panther' film, a dynamite addition, and Spike Jones' 'stripper' interpretation of the 'serious' "Shangri-La" possibly funny as an in-joke but also just plain cool. Basically, more than 2/3rds of this compilation is great, with the rest being decent to good. So...you decide. I like it!

I'm not normally into jazz, but this soundtrack is amazing. I also love the movie...so it is a win-win. I bought this soundtrack back in 1999 and at some point got rid of it, but had to buy it again (in 2009) and it certainly didn't disappoint. Still so fresh sounding. Love it!

This soundtrack omits the song everyone was singing during the waterfront festival of the Virgin Mary. It's listed in the film credits, though:

"Rusariu di la 'Mmaculata" by Fratelli Mancuso

Luckily, it can be found on their album "Bella Maria." And, surprise, surprise, the artists themselves are leading the song in the movie (i.e. as priests)!

Sorry, Sony -- you'll be missing my $(13.98 - Amazon markup) on this one -- I only wanted it for this track...

This is one of the few soundtracks I know of which is an even deeper expression of the movie than the movie itself. With a wonderful mix of jazz and blues and Gabriel Yared's poignant and haunting score, you feel as if you are traveling just listening to it. It captures period, emotion and narrative completely. "Sounds go through the muscles" Bjork says. This music goes through the soul.

I love this film score!!!

This is one of my favorite soundtracks, but its missing a few of the best songs from the movie. One has already been mentioned as possibly a Mozart piece that Tom plays throughout the movie, but there are more. "May I" was not included, and also, there are 2 other songs from the beginning: the one being played live where he sneaks a peek while on the job; then the one that is the background as he is packing and then leaving with the chauffeur - both in the first part of the movie. The first sounds classical and the second operatic. Does anyone know what the songs are or who they are by?
