i loved ringo's performances, excellent and very funny. you jus can see ringo's ability to connect with the audience, joines by a great band. sheila e. did a great job, and the songs performed by her are really good.

But the one who really steals the show (obviously after RiNGO) is Edgar Winter, who played three amazing songs! (Free Ride, Dying to Live and Frankenstein) What an artist!!!

I've been waiting to get a Ringo live DVD for some time now. I was excited and watched the whole thing the minute it arrived. The performances are all great. Everyone on this All Starr band are great musicians. The interviews between songs are kind of dull. Some of the interviews are ok but most of them are just repetitive. I do believe that this is the first time Ringo performed "What Goes On" live and now you can see it on DVD over and over again.

Once again Ringo has assembled a stellar group to be his All Starr band. The concert is a great showcase of both Ringo and band member numbers, with interview clips from all members, interspersed between numbers.
Ringo is a master showman, but also allows each member of the band to shine, something those familiar with previous All Starr lineups will attest to.Highly recommended to anyone who loves good music, the Beatles,or just a great fun time

With twenty-six songs in surround sound, the sound is perfect for displaying the oldies live like you've never heard them before. Rod Argent plays his very oldie, `She's Not There" with a near perfect rendition. Of course, he also supplies the seventies monster hit, "Hold Your Head Up", a completely different style of music. Sheila E. gets her kicks in frequently as a super-percussionist, teaming up with and sometimes replacing Ringo Starr on drums. Her, "The Glamorous Life" is a nice powerful performance with a great finale. Billy Squire who has never really been a huge hit, performs very, very well with his signature songs, "Everybody Wants You" and "Rock Me Tonight", obviously relishing every piece he shares intimately wit the audience. My favorite has to be the wild and weird Edgar Winter who does a great job on, `Free Ride", but brings the house down with his wild rendition of, "Frankenstein, playing both keyboards, saxophone and a duel percussion with Sheila E. To watch this giant guy recreate that classic song with all the special effects and synthesizes is worth the DVD alone. Sheila E. does a great powerhouse job on the drum solo as well as playing duel percussion with Winter. Multi-talented Richard Marx and Hamish Stuart round out the band playing on nearly every song. Of course, Ringo Starr gets his famous songs in, like, `Photograph", "Yellow Submarine" and A little Help From My Friends" and more. The only drawback is the frequent interruptions with interviews from each of the musicians and Ringo Starr, but the music makes up for that minor inconvenience.

All I have to say is, as a "phan" that started listening later in their career, this album with out a doubt turned me onto Phish. They're one of those bands that manage to sound great in all different types of venues. This one recorded in various small places in Europe. Every song is performed flawlessly, some so good that I've yet to hear a better release to compare them to such as Wolfman's Brother, Weigh, or Mike's Song (especially that guitar playing during the intro and vocal verse sections). They seemed to have chosen a great selection of live songs to fill the album with. Of all live releases of any band this is one of the best in quality. And they come off as appropriate. I'm still intrigued to this day by most of their live work no matter how many times I listen. This album will never go old.

Phish shows why they are a great improvisational and cover band

If there has been a band that has had the most success of being an "underground" band, it would have to be Phish. Phish has long had the reputation of being a band with an "open audio taping" policy and as a result they built up a great following - especially as a live act. . In fairness to the quartet, this is a band that produces some of the most innovative music anywhere on the music scene. Phish's reputation both as a studio band and a live act really took off in the mid 1990s. Phish's 1997 release "Slip Stitch and Pass" shows power of Phish in a live, intimate setting and does not disappoint.

Phish is commonly called a "jam" band. In the live setting for many of their songs, Phish seems to follow a very simple formula. The songs have simple lyrics - most of the lyrics toward the beginning of the song. Many of their songs are then extended with some beautiful and intricate instrumental pieces - "or jam" pieces. These pieces can be long If you want to know why Phish isn't played on conventional radio - this is the reason. It's a shame because conventional radio's loss becomes the fans gain. Many of the songs on "Slip Stitch and Pass" follow this format.

"Slip Stitch and pass" is the second live album by Phish. The first one was 1994's "A Live One". I look as "A Live One" as a good introduction to Phish as it really showcases Phish's jams in top form. "A Live One" was a double CD set with only 12 songs, but contained 131 minutes of music. However it was in the mid 1990s where Phish would not only cement themselves as a jam band, but they also would establish themselves as a premier improvisational band. In fact, they might just be one of the greatest improvisational bands of all time. They put a mix of Folk, Rock, Jazz, and Country into their music. In other words, improvisational music allows them to do whatever they want. In their live performances, Phish is most famous for "doing whatever they want". Albums in the mid 1990s such as "Hoist" and "Billy Breathes" showcases how Phish would improvise in the studio. "Slip Stitch and Pass" does a great job at showcasing the live improvisational skills of Phish.

The mid 1990s saw Phish emerge as one of the great cover bands in a live setting. By covering other songs would be a natural extension of the improvisational skills of Phish. "Slip Stitch and Pass" contains three cover songs.

It's hard to tell whether "Slip Stitch and Pass" is actually a full Phish concert or not. For the most part, the songs do flow nicely from one to another and give the actual feeling of being at a Phish concert. The setting is a small venue in Hamburg, Germany - and the recording does give you an intimate setting for Phish's live music.

Here is a look at the nine tracks:

"Cities": This is a cover song of a Talking Heads song. Here we see Phish put their own unique spin on the song. Phish puts more of a humorous spin on the song. Some may find the song irritating, but I found this to be "classic Phish". I found the instrumentation of the band to be top notch. Overall, a great cover.

"Wolfman's Brother": This is a live version to this track originally found on "Hoist". There is a nice extended jam of this song. This song has a funk type of feel and much of this is due to the great synchronization between Page McConnell's keyboards and Trey Anastasio's guitar.

"Jesus Just Left Chicago": This is a cover of a ZZ Top song. Like ZZ Top, Phish puts a blues spin on this song, but also builds this into an extended jam. This song really showcases the intimate setting of the concert. About 6+ minutes into the song listen to someone in the crowd shout, "Trey, you Rock!"

"Weigh": This is a song from the "Rift" album. It has a humorous spin. The live setting amplifies the humor in this song. This song also benefits from the strong synchronization of Anastasio's guitar and McConnell's keyboards.

"Mike's Song": This is a live version of an old Phish song and is the first song of the "Mike's Groove" trilogy. Being "Mike's Song", this is bassist's Mike Gordon's baby. This is a terrific 13+ minute jam and while the whole band ultimately shines here, it is Gordon's bass setting the pace.

"Lawn Boy": This is the title track from the 1990 album and fills the role that "I Am Hydrogen" typically fills as the second song of the "Mike's Groove" trilogy. I always felt this song had a supper club feel. The intimate setting (and response of the crowd) really gives the supper club feeling. It is crooning - Phish style.

"Weekapaug Groove": This is the last song of the "Mike's Groove" trilogy. This is just a flat out great jam. Great instrumentation and once again Phish at the best.

"Hello My Baby": Here we have Phish doing a cover of this barbershop quartet song. The a cappella version showcases Phish's humor and improvisational skills as well as showcases the intimate crowd.

"Taste": This is the contribution from "Billy Breathes". On this collection, they do what they didn't do on "Billy Breathes" - they add the extended jam to it. Once again, fine instrumentation by the entire band.

Overall this is a fine live collection. It has a good mix of older and more current Phish (by 1997's standards). If you started out with "A Live One", this is the next logical step to extended your live collection (and there is no repetition between the two live albums). Of course, nothing takes the place of a straight out performance of a full Phish show, but this should still suffice.

I just got this CD, and maybe I'll hear some incredible things after a few more listens, but so far it doesn't seem like their best work. Maybe it's just me, but the vocals sound alittle off --something seems different to me -- as compared to their other live stuff. The song selection is decent, especially Wolfman's Brother and Mike's Song, but it could better. Hampton Comes Alive and A Live One are deffinetly stronger albums with better songs.

Give it up for the covers...

Phish is an amazing band, no question. This release is one I keep coming back to for "Taste," the final track on the disc, and the two covers, "Cities" and "Jesus Left Chicago". The latter is one of my favorite tracks on any album, period. It shows Phish tackling a genre they usually don't approach so directly- the blues- with a style and grace that almost convinces me they are a blues-rock band masquerading as a prog-funk outfit. I am amazed that Trey can nail that sound so well, when he seems to practice it so rarely. It speaks volumes for the versatility of Trey and the band as a whole. The rest- good- but "A Live One" is better overall as it is "edgier" and sounds more fresh. Still, you can't go wrong here.

song by song overview because it sounds lame to tell someone hey this sucks or i love this
cities - funny, groovy and has a cool wah rythym to it good song to chill to and 'get some thinking done'
wolfman - awesome version of the song possibly the best because unlike hoist its a little more flowing and when it goes 'broth-er' with the guitar riff after it, i get goose bumps
jesus/chicago - and after a long slow paced jam with distintive bass and wah guitar we find our selves at a beat-slow slow-beat blues cover of jesus left chicago with a sweet solo in the midst of it
weigh - an alright song not my favorite but, give it credit for being mike's highlight on the album, not to much improv here but it does give a nice interlude to mikes' song and this song is really, i guess you could say, overall, phishy
mike's song - wow best part of the cd maybe, take mike's song and add a out of control sweet tension build up,' the end theme ', 'careful with that axe screams' and finish with a factory jam until we get to a 'and he walked down the hall'(morrison) to the next ...
lawn boy - good song with some nice page vocals and a smoothe bass riff by mike, also some nice feed back
weekapog groove - cool main riff with more 'the end' referencing, it's a groove, a monster groove, so don't think to hard just appreciate it all at once as a whole flowing enima, can you dig?
hello my baby - it's cute and funny but also quiet and that ticks me off just a wee bit, i have to turn up my stereo to hear the individual words, this track closes the album in a sense and prepares the listeners for a climax on taste
taste - great closer, if it weren't for this song i wouldn't probably be writing this review and screaming to all to buy it and listen your ears off and don't be to quick to judge

overall awesome, only four stars because of hello my baby is quiet and weigh is not the greatest song inmy opinion, but hey who am i, if you like phish and want to know what live phish is all about or just like jam bands or just like music get it and embrace it

Kenny Barron established a personal landmark as sax player. He was not so sober like Coltrane but in many works, he explored with major amplitude the most diverse ranges of the musical shape, with original sonorities and enraptured mood. And this album with Charlie Haden is a winner.

By far, one of my six aces of the sax.

If you are looking for an audiophile piano recording, this one is outstanding. The piano is close miked, and and you can clearly hear the striking of the keys. The sound is beautiful, and is probably as good of a piano recording as I have heard. The bass background resonates in club and there are no wasted notes. The music is best characterized as soft jazz, and one can imagine listening to this in a posh restaurant / night club. This is one outstading recording deserving of 5 stars.

Many of us have been there......you're in a strange city on a business assignment and you've been puting in a lot of hours . You leave the downtown building well after dark, the streets are no longer crowded and while not exactly foggy, there's a heavy mist that seems to muffle the sounds. You don't really look forward to going back to the hotel room and as you walk you spot a sign proclaiming live jazz music. You think to yourself it might be a good idea to have a drink and unwind so you go down the stairs. The place has a nice ambiance and you notice it has a fair sized patronage considering it's the middle of the week and the weather. You sit down at a table and order a Blanton's on the rocks as the musicians, a bass/piano duo, break into a tune that you immediately recognize as one of your personal favorites by Ray Noble, "The Very Thought of You". As you listen to the music, it becomes apparent to you that you will be here until they are finished playing for the evening or the club runs out of good bourbon.

Yes, that may seem like a bit of fantasy and I would certainly not make it as a writer............however, these are the visions that cropped up in my own mind the first time I heard this cd. While not being a particular fan of duos (although my collection has a number of them), this one holds my interest from begining to end because of the lyricism expressed on these ballads by a pianist whom I thought was always under rated and a bassist whom I had only previously known by reputation. What a listening gold mine!! If it doesn't rank as the top piano album, it wouldn't take long to call the roll!

When you want to unwind, listen to this cd. It's jazz and it's beautifully expressed, sensitive and relaxing.

I am a huge Eric Clapton fan. In my opinion, this is truly some of his BEST work! The soul and feeling behind this live show is truly incredible. It's moving, it's clean, it's soulful, it's intoxicating! Moreover, it's worth a hell of a lot more than $25. Buy it... trust me.

Oh... and when you get it... really listen to Bell Bottom Blues. It's not only the best version of the song that I have ever heard, it's my favorite song in the world.

The premise of Eric Clapton's live double compact disc, `24 Nights,' to quote Derek Taylor's liner notes, was an undertaking "to celebrate his (Clapton's) music at the Royal Albert Hall over 24 nights with first a four-piece band and then a nine-piece and then a batch of blues giants and finally a mighty orchestra..." For any fan of rock, but especially for fans of Eric Clapton, there is lot to like about `24 Nights.'

Recorded live in 1990 and 1991 at about the same time as Clapton's studio release, `Journeyman,' `24 Nights' includes classics such as `Badge,' `White Room,' and `Sunshine of Your Love' recorded with the four-piece band, blues standards `Have You Ever Loved A Woman' and `Hoodoo Man' with the blues band, `Pretending' and `Bad Love' with the more contemporary nine-piece band, and `Bell Bottom Blues' with the National Philharmonic Orchestra.

As one would expect, many of the musicians with whom Clapton surrounds himself are legends in their own right. The various line-ups feature such Phil Collins, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Jimmy Vaughn, and Johnnie Johnson. There are quite a few names familiar to the fans of "Eric Clapton and His Band" releases and tours, including Greg Phillinganes, Nathan East, and Ray Cooper. Even Jamie Oldaker, who was a part of Clapton's bands during the 1970's and early 1980's on the studio release `Backless,' among others, is the percussionist for the `24 Nights' blues band.

Each of the bands produce a sound that combines both Clapton's blues and "Cream-y" roots as well as Clapton's mature and confident style reminiscent of the more recent Clapton releases. The `Sunshine of Your Love' track is the Clapton/Bruce/Baker edition on steroids. The energetic `Pretending' and `Bad Love' jump right through the speakers, while the version of `Wonderful Tonight' featuring vocalist Kitty Kissoon is literally erotic.

The only criticism for `24 Nights' is relates to the collaboration with the orchestra. While other rock band/orchestra associations really seemed to have clicked, Clapton's effort just misses the mark. On the `Bell Bottom Blues' track, in particular, the band and the orchestra seem to be about a half or quarter note off, although `Edge of Darkness' is fairly powerful and quite a bit more on. Maybe it just took a while for the band and the symphony to warm to one another.

In all, `24 Nights' is bottled lightning. Clapton's guitar riffs shoot right out from the tracks and, with the exception of the symphony tracks, the music and the musicians are tight. `24 Nights' provides just about any music fan with a great listen, while dedicated Clapton fans will appreciate both the classic style as well as the experience and the maturity of a true rock legend.

Almost 3 and half stars but still worth the purchase

I love live Clapton releases. This is a good release but I feel the songs are rushed and bland compared to other "live" versions. I cannot stomach the end of "Wonderful Tonight", especially if you ever seen the video of it, sounds like a cat in heat...but there are highlights including the songs released during this time period "Pretending", "Bad Love", and a nice version of "Bell Bottom Blues"....maybe this was the 24th night, I just feel the energy had left the building.

24 Nights is a concert that was recorded over the period of 9 evenings at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
During the couse of the 24 evenings he uses essentially 2 bands and a band with an orchestra.
The fist installment is his current band at the time.
They do songs from his latest CD. The songs include, Pretending, Bad Love, Old Love, and Wonderful Tonight.
The second phase is a blues phase with Robert Cray and Buddy Guy playing guitar with Chuck Berrys piano player Johnny Johnson.
The Blues tracks in my mind are the best on the CD.
Clapton does Watch Yourself, Worried Life Blues and Voodoo Man, as well as Have You Ever Loved A Woman.
The third phase is with an orchestra that includes Bell Bottom Blues, Hard Times and Edge of Darkness.
The version of Wonderful Tonight is haunting. He slows the song down and with Katie Kasssons vocals the song is outstanding.
If you like Blues or if you like EC you need to get this one.

If you enjoy Three Dog Night, treat yourself to this album. It showcases this band beautifully and demonstrates that, first and foremost, this was a real live performance band and not a hot-house orchid studio creation. For those only casually acquainted with TDN and who are curious, this is a rewarding place to explore. Since it was recorded in 1973 (the band's reputed high point), a lot of their hits are missing since they hadn't been done yet. That's a good reason to also pick up the newly remastered hit singles cd.

Ever since the very late sixties when I was a college vocal music major, I've been a fan of this group. Their high energy performances and vocal harmonies really appealed to me and the circle of musicians I hung with.
Three Dog Night had so many things going for it, from Chuck Negron's smooth tenor sound to Cory Well's soulful interpretations. Almost like the Righteous Brothers with turbo drive. What a sound these three singers had, and of course the band backing them up was superb. I went to one of their concerts in Tulsa in the early seventies and was not dissapointed in what I heard. One of few groups that sounded as good live as they did in the studio.
So, this live album is a welcome addition to my Three Dog Night collection. It takes me back to that Tulsa concert.

I won't rewrite what others have already said, but this a major release from a great band. The band is in top form on all of the cuts, and the quality of the recording is fantastic--it sounds like you're right there at the concert. Danny, Chuck, Cory--if any of you read this: you only live once, how about one more tour with the original band? You all still sound amazing live, it would no doubt be a huge success!

Marsha's voice is absolutely incredible. This is one of the best live CD's to come along in a while. It's considered a collector's item in my CD collection. I even like some of the songs better live than the studio version. Just great.

Floetry is truly a unique duo. There is no one else out there like them. They combine Rap with some of the best Rhythm & Blues out there. Lyrically, they far surpass most artist's of today. I don't think they have gotten much credit for the music they create, and believe me, they deserve it. Give them a shot, you will not be disappointed.

Its BETTER live. These girls are absolutely Amazing. I have seen them in concert a few times and it's always a very impressive and soulful event. I can't even put into words how GRATEFUL I am that these two women... these two styles... these two prospectives... have come together. I am a poet, a writer, and this music is truly food for the soul. The words are so meaningful, in depth, never shallow! Always meeting expectation. In fact, its hard for them NOT to meet expectations because what they are producing is so real, it's just Life... feelings... Emotions... they are performing Spoken Word over emotional melodies... They bring a much needed breath of fresh air to the industry. I am most definitely a supporter of Floetry and I can only hope and pray these women continue to bring quality sounds to my, our, ears. If you're not a fan of floetry... or critique them the way some of these reviews do (And I respect the fact that we all have our opinion) but if you are leaning toward the negative in regard to these two women and their art, then you are looking way to deep, and I feel sorry that you have to try that hard to understand them, and still fail to... If this is you, then the meaning of what they are doing, the concept and value of what they are bringing to their audience is totally passing you by...

This product was pretty cheap when I first ordered it. I received it (rather quickly) and was very pleased to find out that I got much more bang for my buck than what I was expecting. Not only did I get my concert DVD and live audio tracks disc. I also unexpectedly obtained an internet card that gave me access to many more live songs virtually that were not included on my second disc. It was simply that pleasant surprise that made me love this product. Maybe you'll get one too!

My first purchase on Amazon.com. I'm really satisfacted about the short time the product takes to arrive here in Brazil.

This concert is unique, just like Dispatch is. African children pretty expressive.

Even with the free downloads this was very disappointing. I can't get enough of the live guitar sets from the Madison Square Garden telecast. I actually thought it was some of the best drum and guitar i had seen in many, many years. I expected the same music to be on the CD or the free downloads. I was sadly mistaken.

Hei

This is an absolute must-have for Dispatch fans!

In fact, this is an absolute must-have for anyone who loves music. Period. Full-length concert, a ten-song CD, and a card to redeem online for 22 more songs to download (Which, by the way, was very easy)! Dispatch puts on an amazing performance, the sound was great, and the extras and interviews were awesome!

So, for all of you Dispatch fans who didn't get to go see this legendary concert in person, this DVD is a darn good substitute.

I ordered this CD based on the strength of a few songs I had heard elsewhere, namely "Ring of Fire" and "Bolero". These songs, in addition to "Stairway to Heaven" are terrific. Extremely well recorded as well (from an audiophile standpoint). The rest of the album is, well, interesting to say the least. I understand from the liner notes that the band disbanded mid-tour. I can see why, after listening to a few of the recordings here. It sounds self-indulgent, bordering on disaster at times. I can't imagine sitting in the audience for this concert! At times it sounded like all the instruments were dropped down a set of stairs.
In summary, Zappa had a great opportunity to have created something exceptional. Instead, we got a mess.

The material has been treated in friveless manner and does not have the emotive content or passion of the studio albums. I found it raucuss and not worth listening to. It sounds like they were having a good time but that is not what I want from a Zappa album. I'll stick to Zoot Allures, etc.

i saw a couple of shows on this tour the last two times i saw frank perform. it is a great band, did he ever have a bad one or an uninspired one? as far as this being the best live disc or discs? no. the sound quality is awesome the arrangements interesting and if you like big band productions this is for you.....

The way Bolero flows into Zoot Allures is very clever. In your face, Maurice, you no talent hack. And imagine the guitars of Stairway To Heaven done in horns. And rigt in the middle of Zombie Wolf, Joe Satriani's evil twin clone does some of his best work ever. The band at it's peak, plus a jab or two at Jimmy Swaggart during his post-sinning period. What more do you need?

howard hewett sounds very good on this performance in LA at a intimate club. he sings his solo hits and the shalamar hits as well. the band is tight as well, but it is howard's vocals that still is so moving and soulful. he talks about growing up in ohio and what he use to groove to when he was rolling in his ride.

the bonus material is tight as well with Howard doing a cut with Stanley Clarke and George Duke playing with him.
then Howard and James Ingram do a few vocal runs and talk about back in the day. very soulful.

What a great voice

I have never seen Howard perform and this is exactly how I imagined a solo performance from him. His voice sounds as good as it ever has. If you are a Shalamar fan or just want some smooth vocals, check this out. Howard needs to lose the hat though. If you got a little baldness going on, let it show.
