Spinal Tap are Back from the DeadReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-06-24
Many years after the band was killed in a horrible accident while touring America. The horrific scene of the tour bus accident that happened while driving through Springfield is still etched in my brain. In their memory I listened only to Tap albums for a year. Even the much hated but underappreciated Shark Sandwich. They do however provide a wealth of material to enjoy the music itself is OK there are a few new songs that are worth picking this up for alone. And there new takes on old classics are worth a listen but it just makes me want to listen to the classic version. (Perhaps coming back from the dead took something out of them) The real gem is the bonus DVD which gives some real insight to the album and is worth at least one viewing. I hate to disparage The Tap though but I have found some of the things they had to say hilarious and I am not sure they know they are unintentionally very funny. The packaging is a bit flimsy and is just a commercial to get their action figures but I won't hold it against them I am sure after being dead for some time they need the money (Ha Ha Gimme some money). I just wish there was an explanation to the resurrection. It's more like "Hey where back from the dead but we are really not going to talk about it". They are just back, enjoy it. And with them coming to Wembley they are back in a big way.
Here's to a complete new Tap album in our near future.
Being Back From The Dead never sounded so good!Reviewer ID:

Nothing else for a while. Then I'm walking through one of the only large consumer electronics stores that is still in business. I always look at the new releases. Right there next to Chickenfoot (which I might buy despite the fact that it includes Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony) was "Spinal Tap - Back From The Dead!"
From the very first sound on the CD I knew I was going to love it. It's rock and roll. Well, kinda. It's Spinal Tap rock and roll. "(Listen To The) Flower People" is Spinal Tap rock and roll (hereforth referred to as STRR for brevity's sake) with a serious dose of Bob Marley.
The "Jazz Oddysey" tracks are cool "Give Me Money" (track 6) is two minutes and 33 seconds of cool, STRR humor.
The best track though, in my humble opinion, is the title track; "Back From The Dead." How can you NOT love a song with lyrics like "No greater fun than flipping off the Reaper..." or "...slamming death's door..."
It's just good fun. That's what it's intended to be and they succeed admirably. Even the CD sleeve (if that's what you would call this) is fun. It folds out to give approx. 12" figures of Spinal Tap with a proportionately-sized Stonehenge rendition.
So I give this thing five stars without any reservation and I haven't even watched the DVD yet!
Add it to the Spinal Tap CanonReviewer ID:

This is really a very remarkable package for the money.
After the Black Album debacle, Tap must have decided to go all out on this one. In a package slightly thicker than a regular CD, you receive a very funny DVD with some new moments with Tap, a CD with a selection of a few reworked oldies and a great deal of new material, a booklet with lyrics and an extremely cool pop-up standee set of the entire band, complete with a festival audience.
All this for 10 bucks? Forget all the pretender rock stars who moan about their fans being screwed by the ticket brokers and the record companies while they, themselves, live off your money in shameless luxury churning out untenable crap.
Don't be put off by the inclusion of re-worked older material. These songs definitely stay true to the Spinal Tap mythos and are as valid an addition to the Tap legend as "Break Like The Wind."
I think St. Hubbins, Tufnel and Smalls all recognized they needed to thank the fans that have made them into unlikely pop icons and I believe they have released this fantastic little package at an unbelievable price to do just that.
The new material on the CD includes several selections from the Jazz Oddyssey (actual spelling) and although not appropriate for a festival crowd, on the CD they achieve the musical heights intended.
Welcome back Tap and thanks to you and your pals (Shearer, Guest and McKean) for this special treat. It's going to take a long time for this one to catch up to the number of times I've played the previous two albums, but I've already started trying.
LONG LIVE TAP!
An uninspiried waste of moneyReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-06-29
Eagerly anticipated this release, hoping for another does of "Break...", as in new tracks that would add to the canon of the Spinal Tap mythology.
"Jazz Odyssey" is a mess, and it's a mess that's divided into three parts. "Flower People" done as a reggae sounds uninspired as does the "Funky Sex Farm".
The tracks that were re-recorded were okay, but only benefited from better production quality; I would have rather heard eight new tracks than simple re-recordings of songs that were just fine in their original forms.
Personally, I think they really set the bar high with "Break Like the Wind" in that they went back and recorded songs that were supposed to be part of the band's history and some tracks meant to be new. One of the new tracks here (called "Short and Sweet") just has absolutely no place in the Tap catalog; it's performance doesn't sound (musically) as if it's supposed to be an old rarity and it makes no sense as a "new" Tap track.
The two-stars were for "Back from the Dead", "Warmer Than Hell", and "Rock and Roll Nightmare". You give me a disc full of these kinds of tracks and I'll give five-stars.
In general, highly disappointing.

A Salute To Mountain MusicReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-04-11
Without straining credulity "mountain music" is the music of the simple folk of Appalachia, those who worked hard in the coal mines, on the hard scrabble farms and in the isolated mills of the region. This was their Saturday night entertainment and with the advent of radio was a unifying cultural experience. The songs "speak" of hard and lonely lives, the beauty of the then pristine countryside, the usual vagaries of love and lost and the mysterious ways of a very personal, if arbitrary, god. Throw in a few upbeat tunes reflecting the love of "corn" liquor, women and the sometimes funny side of coping with life's trials and tribulations and you have the mountain version of the folk experience. Sound familiar? Sure it does, except, it is done with simple guitar, a blazing fiddle and, hopefully a full-bodied mandolin.
Here you have all the above types of songs mentioned above in one spot. The cadence of the work in hard prison life gets a nod in "Po Lazarus". The hobo's national anthem (Great Depression era version) "Big Rock Candy Mountain" is also here. The vagaries of love get spelled out in "Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby". For uplift try the one everyone knows- "You Are My Sunshine". Norman Blake, worthy of a separate review of his own as a master of mountain music, provides a very rich instrumental "A Man Of Constant Sorrow". Finally, no recent compilation of mountain music is complete without Ralph Stanley's eerie "O Death" and "Angel Band". If you need a primer for learning about mountain music here you are.

Too Awesome for WordsReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-06-23
The songs are catchy and it's really easy to listen to the album over and over. You can't be offended by language or crude humor, though. My mom still can't figure out why I love "I'm On a Boat" so much. She really wasn't into it at all.
For the classics on here - "I'm On a Boat," "Lazy Sunday," "Dick in a Box" - I'm giving it five stars. Most of the songs are great quality and a fun listen. A few, like "Punch You in the Jeans," are only okay. I guess if they were all good, I'd have to give the album six stars.
I will never understand why comedy albums insist on putting in those minute-long "skit" tracks. "Normal Guy," "Shrooms," and "The Old Saloon" are maybe funny the first time through, but they're not something I put on repeat. If they weren't there, the album wouldn't suffer.
The videos on the DVD are a lot of fun - they're the SNL digital shorts - but a few are definitely missing. They should have had the "I'm On a Boat" video on there but they didn't.
Break out your Santana DVX and get this album. It's well worth it.

Created with kids in mind, there's also an adult bent to the songs, and positive vibes radiate everywhere. "People Watching," for instance, comes across like a tonic for loneliness, conveying that we're all similar in many ways and in this world together. "We're Going to be Friends" is a spot-on, sweetly sung rendition of the White Stripes original, and it fits this CD like a well-worn baseball mitt. And Johnson's gentle guitar plucking on tunes like "Wrong Turn," "Lullaby" and "Supposed to Be" denote a somber tone that conveys life isn't always perfect, but it does contain great moments.
Johnson's smooth, easygoing voice matches the soft music played around him. Along with his band, well-known musicians like Ben Harper and G. Love also assist. From learning and recalling life's lessons in a joyous way to simply enjoying great music, this cozy CD is a definite winner.

Diverse offering, something for everyoneReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-06-15
This release is also the last album featuring Furler as front man; he will be continuing with the group as a songwriter. Michael Tait - formerly of dc Talk - is taking up the mantle from here on out, and long-time fans who aren't able to make it to a live concert or festival to hear him singing in the lead can hear his backup vocals on the new disc.
Building upon the groups long-term momentum and loyal existing fan base, their fourteenth album arrived on the scene like a high-speed rocket, shooting to number one ranks on singles charts and Christian music charts, number one on iTunes in the Christian/Gospel category and in the top 30 on Billboard. Hailed as delivering the classic Newsboys sound, new listeners such as myself may find themselves wondering what exactly that sound is.
On my initial listen I was immediately struck by the distinct sound of an Australian-founded band. Like my first exposure to Midnight Oil, it took a while for my Canadian ears to adjust to and decipher Furler's slightly accented lyrics. By the third of fourth time through I was singing along. The sound itself is largely eclectic, and that in and of itself seems to be a marker for Newsboys albums. Ranging from classic rock through to electronic Brit-pop stylings and soaring symphonic songs of worship, the band serves up a little bit of everything.
Opening with "The Way We Roll" the band rocks its way through the hardest track on the disc, a musical introduction to their history, work and purpose declaring, "that's the way we roll, `cause we've been set free". Pointing to God as the sole progenitor of their music, sustainer, and motivator; this driving tune kicks things off before heading into a diverse range of songs that run the gamut of CCM.
There are a few misses on the disc, "No Grave" while haunting in melody fails to capture the imagination, "This Is Your Life" comes off as a platitude, and "The Upside" falls squarely within Brit-pop, a genre that leaves me cold. Though these tracks weren't my cup-of, the disc is diverse enough that there's something here for everyone.
"Glorious" is just that, pointing out our ever-present failings and the need to continue running into God's arms for His sustenance, for His love. Wreathed with a rich swirl of strings this soaring song will lead listeners into a great and deeper dependence upon recognizing their utter insufficiency. "In The Hands of God" is without doubt the most memorable track, featuring an insanely catchy, take-away pop melody, and rich spiritual message.
Demonstrating a sense of humor that pokes fun at onself, "My Friend Jesus" features punchy lyrics and the unusual premise of God's sanctifying work through a patience-trying call with a help-line that puts user on hold interminably. It's a fun, lighter piece with a simple chorus that works and brings a few chuckles each time I listen to it. "Lead Me To The Cross" begins with a simple piano and grows into a rousing Christ-centered apogee - strings included. "Dance" is another of the harder tracks that has Furler leaning towards speaking over singing, the staccato, rhythmic text phasing into chorus that leads into the boundary lands between pop and dance music, while the choppy body of the song is reminiscent of indie-rock.
The bands Australian background goes largely unfelt throughout the album - other than the subtle accent - but it does feature prominently in "RSL 1984", which feels like a voyeuristic look into a boys ongoing relationship with God. It seems filled with insider only references, and will likely be more appreciated by long-time Newsboys fans.
If you're new to this bastion of CCM, it's not too late to discover the widespread appeal of the band. Don't worry about playing catch-up, just jump in - the listening is fine; In The Hands of God is diverse enough to provide a few, new favourites for most everyone.

The cd is excellent, Newsboys always has a good beat, my favorite trac is The Way We Roll.
Wish Pete, and the Newboys the best of luck, and continued success.

Review Date: 2009-06-23
Anyway, when I got the CD, I was initially a little disappointed that it includes only 10 songs. But there are NO DUDS on this CD! EVERY song is a gem. I cannot stop listening to it, and I don't skip any of the songs or put them out of order. I especially love "No Grave" and I have already told my son that if I die suddenly, I want that song played at my memorial, REALLY LOUD!! :) I'm pretty sure he would honor my wish, which is why I told him specifically. My other big favorite is "RSL 1984," which kind of gives the philosophy of the band members within their lives' context.
But every track is great for its own reasons. You will NOT regret your purchase. 10 great songs is an amazing feat. I am sad because Newsboys without Peter isn't the same band, but this CD is a great way to end a long, grace-filled career. I can't wait to hear what Peter does in a solo role!

The songs range from lighthearted fun to serious praise and worship. There are lighter pop and more intense rock offerings. There are really no weak songs on this CD. My favorite is 'In the Hands of God', but there are many other standouts.

Dane is back on top. And not the way you were just thinkinReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-06-29
This cd goes back to his earlier days as far as how funny it is. It isnt the typical Dane Cook people are used to and it is because of the dark times in his life with his personnal struggles and it show. I think this act is exactly what DC needed. To me he started to not be as funny as he used to be. I was not a big fan of Vicious Circle and didnt even give it a second watch as I was that un-impressed.
But I am here to sway he is back. I think that he grabs you by the shoulders and just shakes the sh&$ out of you saying "IM BACK". Sit back and enjoy.
Also with this cd comes a DVD that has some additional jokes on it but I was dissappointed when I compared it to the included content on previous cd/dvd combos.

ISOLATED INCIDENT by DANE COOK
I enjoyed Dane Cook's previous albums, but I found that they staled more with repeated listens. Much of his material isn't funny by itself; it's his erratic and energetic delivery that prompts most laughs. In this album, Dane has toned himself down quite a bit. He has chosen topics that are closer to the bone (his hunt for a good woman, the loss of his parents to cancer, the recent rash of Dane-Hating that has lit up blogs and websites since he made it big), but he always switches topics just as you think he's either a) going to really open up or b) going to tell a really funny joke. What you're left with are a bunch of bits that feel half-finished and lukewarm. Gone is the acerbic word play and spit-fire delivery. Now it's just Dane chit-chatting on stage. Just okay, at three stars, with almost no replay factor at all.
THE TOP PART by JOHN MULANEY
Mulaney is a warm guy on the mike, very easy-going and personable. His humor is sometimes self-deprecating (his lack of knowledge about world finance, his tendency to drink too much, his lack of sports ability) but mostly the kind of "something funny happened to me" stories that you and your friends probably talk about when you're out together. He's a funny guy, if not particularly clever. It's a four star album but without much of a replay factor. (I've taken to skipping to my favorite tracks, involving his love of Law & Order and his favorite meal of all time.)
KING BABY by JIM GAFFIGAN
I loved his album, DOIN' MY TIME, and his delivery (Jim regularly interrupts his own stand-up in the guise of a critical audience member), and this album is no different. What impresses me is that Jim's choice of topics never changes -- his unabashed laziness and love of food -- and yet his material never grows old. Best known for his Hot Pockets! routine, this album introduces his hilarious take on Dunkin' Donuts, Waffle House, and bacon. That and a high replay factor makes this a five star album.
PARTY by NICK SWARDSON
Awhile back I caught Nick's act on COMEDY CENTRAL PRESENTS and loved it, but could never find anything else by the guy. I discovered and bought this album and discovered that it's pretty much the same as his Comedy Central routine, except a bit longer and a lot stupider. Nick celebrates his idiocy and mumbles his way through jokes that seemed a lot tighter when I watched him perform them on TV. Pro- and preceeded by two ridiculously dumb sketches (one of them starring David Spade), this album was the only one in the bunch that I regretted buying. Two stars.

While it's debatable if this is Dane's best work, it's quite different than the others. There's a noticeable ego check from the madness of The Garden from a little 30-person comedy club with Dane regularly interacting with the audience. So in more ways than one, it's your regular comedy album, where the comedy shines. Which it does, especially on tracks like "Peanut Butter Smack," which is both original and hilarious, if not wrong. I mean really, Dane literally uses the 7 dirty words at least once on this album.
Thus, if you're a fan, you'll love it, if your a hater, you'll find even more reason to hate, to which Dane will hate back on you. Love it or hate it, take it or leave it, call him egotistical, call him overrated, or just call him what he is, funny.
