Here is one of the records which showed what was really to come down the line, and it is still probably his best effort (yes, Thriller is amazing and really does deserve the accolades, but this one always was special)
Maybe it was because I was young. Maybe because it was the first time he was a new artist, no longer the Jackson 5 member (love them too.)
The real bottom line, if you are limiting which records you will get from his career (particularly solo) this one is in the top 2 no matter what.

Michael Jackson ... OFF THE WALL (1979)Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-06-28
"DON'T STOP 'TIL YOU GET ENOUGH"
The first single from the album. I never really cared too much for this song when I was a kid, but I find this song to be growing on me.
"ROCK WITH YOU"
The second single from the album. This was always one of my favorite songs from MJ. The outfit he wore in this song's music video had to have been one of the coolest outfits he's ever worn.
"WORKING DAY AND NIGHT"
This was another favorite song of mine, ever since I was a kid. I remember hearing this song for the first time on MJ's "The Making of 'Thriller'" video. How I wish the song was released as a single. It could done really well on the charts, in my opinion.
"GET ON THE FLOOR"
A great tune.
"OFF THE WALL"
The third single from the album. Another great song. I could listen to this song 24 / 7.
"GIRLFRIEND"
The fifth single from the album. This song was originally recorded by Paul McCartney, who, by the way, had originally written this song with Michael Jackson in mind, then decided to keep this song for himself. Michael then covered this song for this album. Great song.
"SHE'S OUT OF MY LIFE"
The fourth single from the album. This is such a beautiful song, though, at the same time, very sad. Another song that I could listen to 24 / 7.
"I CAN'T HELP IT"
Great song.
"IT'S THE FALLING IN LOVE" (performed by Michael Jackson & Patti Austin)
Great duet.
"BURN THIS DISCO OUT"
A great song to end this great album.
Growing up in throughout the late '80s and throughout the '90s, I had always been a fan of Michael Jackson's. Now, that Michael has sadly passed on, leaving us with his incredible music and memory, I feel like an even bigger fan than I already was. As much as I love his music, I have no idea how I, as do the rest of us, am gonna listen any of his songs without feeling heartbroken over his untimely death. This album, among his many others, will help us to remember Michael as one of the greatest singers and dancers of all time.

It includes the special mixes of "Rapture," "Heart Of Glass," "Sunday Girl," and "In The Flesh" that were included on "The Best Of..." album and the original mix of "Denis." I only knew the latter song from Once More into the Bleach [another brilliant CD I recommend] and that was a different extended version--but both sound great.
BLONDIE-GREATEST HITS contains all the tracks that were on "The Best Of Blondie" plus 7 more, including "Maria" from the 1999 reunion album No Exit.
The cover insert folds out and contains information like single chart position and which album the singles were originally on, color photos, and excellent liner notes by Steve Pafford.
Blondie's contribution to popular music cannot be measured by album sales or popularity alone. The reverberations of their music can still be felt today as a new generation discovers the group's music and their influence on current singers and bands is far and wide.
BLONDIE-GREATEST HITS is the perfect intro to that music. It has some of Blondie's best known songs and shows their amazing versatility as they cross genres of popular music including rap (Rapture), calypso (The Tide Is High), rock (The Hardest Part), disco (Heart Of Glass), and 50s du-wop (In The Flesh) just to name a few.
Even though it replaces the original album nicely, I'm still keeping my copy of 1981's "The Best Of Blondie" because I love the cover photo and it holds a sentimental value for me.

Blondie have gone way up in my estimation now...Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-02-08
After listening to this album, I'd have to say that Blondie are one of a handful of the best US bands of all time...maybe top 3...if not better. This re-evaluation of the band is due to listening to a lot of songs which you don't hear on commercial FM stations in Australia. Over here, you can expect to hear "Heart of glass" a lot. I used to find this a great song but now tend to avoid listening to it when it's on the radio. You do tend to hear "Call me" often too, which is a great, driving, rock song. Too much of that song is barely enough, as Roy and H.G. might say.
It was great to rediscover "The hardest part", a song I had totally forgotten from "Eat to the beat", an L.P. I used to own as a kid. Listening to that song now, it strikes me as the kind of song Jimmy Barnes or AC/DC would do...a very boyzone kind of track, in stark contrast to the sublime girly vocals that lead singer Debbie Harry usually does. If I hadn't just checked Amazon's listing for "Eat to the beat" I would have said that this compilation I'm reviewing is definitive, but some of the songs listed on "Eat to the beat" ring a few bells for me, so maybe a couple more songs from the that earlier album would have done the trick. In any case, this compilation is vastly superior to some skinny compilations I've seen around the place.
The sound quality on this cd is quite good...sounds really bright, and I tend to like that quality in cds. On occasion, it may sound a bit harsh but otherwise, I have no complaints.
One of the qualities I like about the band is the satisfying drumming/drum sound. I make the same comment in my review of The Police's latest compilation. The major hook of the band is the silky, liquid, cooing vocals of Debbie Harry, the blonde bombshell of the band. She can really hold a note too. A great front woman.
Listening to this cd, another comment I can make about their music is the style that they play. To me, they seem to have been influenced by 50's music, and 60's girl band music, but they give a modern update to it.
They do experiment with music though: "The tide is high" [which features a Darth Vader look alike in the video!] has a reggae feel to it, and "Island of lost souls" has a Calypso sound to it. The latter was a minor hit in Australia and I think it was the last time the band charted here.
There are two good songs which features Harry incorporating French lyrics to great effect: "Denis" and "Sunday girl".
My pick as the best songs on this album are "Call me" and "Atomic". The latter has a great bass line in the middle of it. One of the best songs for a great bass solo.
Blondie can also lay claim to being one of the first, if not the first band to take rap music mainstream with "Rapture". The pre-rap part of this song is divine, with Harry at her sensual, sexual, cooing best. It has a gorgeous bell melody at the start, with Harry sounding all girly, then sounding like a sexual woman later in the piece [the song "Maria" also has a very nice bell part to it]. Her rapping and the video are historically interesting for mentioning some 'names' of that scene at the time. The video features graffiti art by well known 'taggers' of the time [graffiti artists].
Some of the songs which make me think of 50's/60's acts are: Dreaming [60's], X Offender [50's/60's], In the flesh [50's/60's girl band sound], Denis [has a Buddy Holly sound, from the 50's] and Sunday Girl.
Apart from the two songs which I think are great [Call me/Atomic/Rapture], the songs I consider to be good on this album are: Dreaming/The tide is high/In the flesh/Denis/Union city blue/The hardest part/Sunday girl/ and Maria. "Union city blue" is a soaring, anthemic song...perfect to sing along too!
Australia gave Blondie their first international hit. Harry says:
"We met Ian [host of seminal Australian music show "Countdown"] in 1977 when we were supporting Iggy Pop in the States. He asked us if we had any videos. We gave him videos for X-Offender and In The Flesh. On Countdown they were meant to play X-Offender, but they played In The Flesh instead. So our success in Australia was one big mistake! By the end of 1977, In The Flesh had hit number two in Australia. It was our first hit anywhere in the world".
Have heard Harry say elsewhere, I think, that maybe Australian stations were a bit too conservative to play "X Offender" at the time. Hearing the latter song for the first time on this cd, I find that amusing. The song isn't particularly confronting and I think "In the flesh" is actually the superior song...by a loooooooong way.
Lastly, some years ago I saw Blondie on pay tv, playing live. I thought Harry was awful...she was still acting like she was the blonde bombshell she used to be and her singing reminded you of how great she used to sing these classics. My wish was for Harry to develop another kind of stage persona and sing her songs in a different, but cool way. Say, maybe more punkish, or raunchy...like Tina Turner, perhaps. A couple of songs on this album could show the way for her, I think: "One way or another" which has a freakshow carnival sort of vocal sound to it...phlegmy etc. "Picture this", which sounds a little Country, has Harry making gargling sounds with her singing. Finding a similar edger to her voice now I think would suit the band perfectly...age has taken away her sublime voice and the ability to hold those notes.
Without this album, I'd be restricted to thinking that the only decent songs this band had are the ones you hear on commercial radio in Australia. The fact that these stations always flog songs to death should be a warning on how bad that assumption is.
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are probably the only American band which shades Blondie. This album is a must buy for pop/rock fans.
An excellent portrait of Blondie's career.Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-08-06
As they always did, Debbie Harry's vocals stand out masterfully over a melting pot of wonderful rhythms and styles, making this a unique band over the last three decades.
It also works fairly just as what it is: a Greatest Hits compilation. No rarities. No B sides. No new songs. No strings attached.
Worth the money.
Blondie Remastered And Better Than EverReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-02-11
"Rapture," which one could argue is the first blending of rap and rock (and pre-dating the Aerosmith/Run DMC tune, "Walk This Way"), is included, and stands as a wonderful example of how well the band could fuse genres that seemingly didn't belong together. The island rhythms and reggae sounds of "The Tide Is High" and "Island Of Lost Souls" prove that Blondie was no stranger to experimentation.
For casual fans and completionists, "Blondie-Greatest Hits" is a must have. It features there best known tunes and offers up some excellent songs to newer fans as well. Hardcore fans probably already have these songs in their collection, but I would suggest they give this hits package a shot, as the digitally remastered songs sound better than ever. Highly recommended.

The Village People start things off big with their smash disco hit entitled "Y.M.C.A." "Y.M.C.A." has an awesome beat and it just might even make your kids want to dance to it! "Y.M.C.A." is classic disco and a great choice to start off this album. Abba's "Dancing Queen" is yet another great number from the golden days of disco; it may have a somewhat slower beat than other songs do but it still is great dancing music. "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer is also classic disco, Donna Summer made many contributions to the disco archives and we're all better off for her doing that! Listen also for Gloria Gaynor doing her awesome hit, "I Will Survive." "I Will Survive" had many, many people out there on the dance floor and this is sure to bring back great memories!
Barry White's "You're The First, The Last, My Everything" is one of the most joyful, triumphant songs I've ever heard; and "Knock On Wood" by Ami Stewart sure does have that disco beat! I love it! The percussion and musical special effects mark the beat for "Knock On Wood" and Ami Stewart sings this like a champ! There's also "That's The Way (I Like It)" by K.C. & The Sunshine Band; K.C. & The Sunshine Band made some VERY good music and quite a few people were really surprised when "K.C." turned out to be a white guy with long hair down his back! I always like hearing K.C. & The Sunshine Band sing and play their awesome tunes.
"Oops Upside Your Head (I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance)" by The Gap Band is disco; but if you listen carefully you just hear the very early beat of hip-hop music coming around the corner. Interesting! The beat is very good and "Oops Upside Your Head (I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance)" is good disco dance music even today. "Love Hangover" by Diana Ross had many people up and out onto a steamy dance floor--this is a great song and Diana Ross does this with all her heart and soul; she really delves into this song to turn out a terrific performance! The song has an unforgettable melody with a beat that makes you want to jump up and start dancing nearly wherever you are.
"Funkytown" by Lipps, Inc. scored a huge hit in the disco clubs; and the mix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" is still perfect for dancing the night away! The CD ends strong with John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John doing "The Grease Megamix." "The Grease Megamix" ends things on a very upbeat note (no pun intended) and that's fantastic.
Pure Disco is great disco music; and it makes an excellent starter CD for people who want a strong single CD sampler of this type of music. Diehard fans may well already have most of these numbers in their disco box set collections already; but if they don't have these songs they should get this album.
Pure Pop Culture..Cashing In On "Disco" Revival Of The 90sReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2007-04-16
Where's Cerrone "Supernature", Giorgio "From Here To Eternity", Alec R. Costandinos "Romeo & Juliet", Machine "There But For The Grace Of God Go I", Jumbo "Turn On To Love" and could go on and on (probably 90% of the folks reading this right now dont even know what those tunes I mentioned are).
Those tunes I mentioned are basic common club play disco from back when...im not even goin mega deep here, just mentioning a few of the REAL disco bilboard hit basics here. Sure, to promote the pop hits, most of these tunes on this comp were played in the corse of the night in 12" remixed format...but they were not the main attraction as pop culture believes!
If anyone is truely interested to hear what disco was really about and wants to get a small taste of the hard true disco sounds, if you can find it (since its out of print), look up the CD comps The Best Disco In Town vol 3 (whole CD) and The Best Disco In Town vol.2 (75% of this CD is true disco) put out by the now gone Hot Productions...there you'll get a small taste of the REAL disco hits from the 1976 - 1980 era which kept everyone dancin and havin fun (with a few early 80s ones thrown in). Forget this pop culture cash in on what the radio mainstream called disco (and if this is what disco really was, I wouldnt blame em one bit for the whole disco sucks movement...but this IS NOT REAL DISCO!).
Like I said, I DO give em credit for putting a few tracks on here that actually were REAL club hits and not on every pop comp (Gibson Brothers "Cuba" is the main one that stands out). But don't take my word for it, seek out the 2 comps I mentioned above and hear for yourself!

fine single CD retrospective--especially for the more casual fanReviewer ID:

The CD begins with The Buggles performing a great hit entitled "Video Killed the Radio Star." "Video Killed the Radio Star" got played so much on the radio I knew all the lyrics by heart! This tune has a fine musical arrangement that The Buggles do this one up right. In addition, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by The Eurythmics was just one of their best tunes; The Eurythmics never sounded better and that strong percussion marks the beat along with the drums. They sing this pretty well, too! I love it; and this was played in all the clubs back in the day. I don't think Wang Chung got enough true respect for their "Everybody Have Fun Tonight;" it's quite a strong number and Wang Chung really showed they had a lot of talent.
There's also the hit "One Thing Leads To Another" by The Fixx; and listen for "Something About You" by Level 42. Level 42 really shines on this tune; "Something About You" was and remains a big hit for them and they do this one with a lot of class. Culture Club got a lot of mileage from "Karma Chameleon" and they deserved every bit of the attention and airplay that they got for this tune. "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" keeps Tears For Fears squarely in the spotlight which was right where they always belonged--awesome! In addition, I really like "Higher Love" by the wonderful Steve Winwood; Steve really sings this one straight out of the ballpark and he remains a music icon to this day.
"Addicted To Love" by Robert Palmer is another song that features the talents of a very accomplished artist; you're bound to enjoy "Addicted To Love." The guitars, percussion and drums combine to form the basis of a strong musical arrangement--but wisely they never steal the show away from Robert; he stays in the spotlight and that's quite all right by me! Dexys Midnight Runners do their wonderful "Come On Eileen;" I remember hearing this on the radio and rushing out to the record store to buy the LP single of this number so I could listen anytime I wanted to hear it! The Stray Cats do a magnificent job on "Rock This Town;" they use the music to complement their vocals perfectly.
Madness plays and sings "Our House" which always makes me think of my childhood home--it's THAT good. This tune will bring back memories and Madness harmonizes really well on the chorus for this classic 80's tune! The CD even ends strong with Squeeze playing "Tempted." "Tempted" was one of their biggest hits ever and they still rank high in my book. They play this to perfection, too.
Overall, Pure 80's is a great CD that I heartily recommend to people who like music from the 1980s. Truthfully, though, it is probably best suited for the newcomer who doesn't yet have these hits in their music collection; but it could be a nice addition for the more diehard fan as well. If you truly want an in-depth look at 80's music, however, I would recommend a box set of this genre of music.

Classics like "Turn the Beat Around," the perennial favorite "We Are Family," "Can't Get Enough of Your Love," "Rock the Boat," Diana Ross's monster hit "Upside Down," "Play the Funky Music," the great "Ring My Bell," It's Raining Men," "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," "The Hustle," "Love's Theme," and the Donna Summer Oscar-winning "Last Dance" will, most definitely, take a disco lover to musical heaven.
Of course, there's a little filler here. "Flashdance" seems a bit too 80's for this collection and Andy Gibb's "I Just Want to be Your Everything" just doesn't fit. However, one can overlook those errors in judgment and just enjoy the disc in its entirety.
