Great overview of Roger's careerReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2005-05-26
In 1975, Roger had his most successful hit when Last farewell made number two in the UK and also made the top twenty in America. Elvis Presley later covered the song. Despite making further excellent records such as River lady and First hello last goodbye, Roger again disappeared from the British charts. He returned just once more, when a duet with Des O'Connor (Skye boat song) just made the UK top ten in 1986.
Seven UK hits hardly does justice to Roger's illustrious career, in which he has sold many millions of albums around the world, but this collection contains all those songs, plus the others I've mentioned and some other great songs including two new ones specially recorded for this compilation, which provides a great introduction to Roger's music.

So the movie takes us around Australia with the DJ chasing and getting kicked out of every concert because he has no ticket or press pass.
Some of the songs sung in the concert I've never heard. Don't wish to hear again.
If the movie had concentrated on ABBA, behind the scenes more, being on a road tour and just interviews with fans and a much better sound feed and cameras set up to film a concert, this might have been good. As it was, I resold it faster than it took to watch it.
The other DVD, Number One Hits is worth the money. I'd pass on this one.

A singularly unique evening of live YesReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2009-06-10
I think there must be something special about Montreux as an event, with it's legacy of historic Jazz and Rock performers and performances, that inspires those honored to participate to perform at their very best.
This was not the usual tired and goofy end-of-tour Yes that usually ends up on video. This was a very focused performance, with a lot of subtlety, precision and improvisation seemingly inspired and elevated by the spirit of jazz which infuses the setting.
Don't expect the blistering rock of "Yessongs" or "Yesshows". For the first time in my memory, the live Yes most sonically resembled the Yes of "Fragile". A singular album in it's relatively light touch and rhythmic intricacy. If any Alan White doubters remain, they need only watch and hear this concert. White is a consummate drummer with a range of style and touch that encompasses that of even Bruford, and his dedication to a mostly acoustic kit has proven the better choice over the long run.
Every band member was in top form, with the inevitable exception of some required vocal forgiveness which is inescapable at this late date. Even then, Jon's vocal performance on the new song "Show Me", without a lot of previous history to form specific expectations, was beautiful, and was far from his only shining moment in the show.
I believe the night belonged to Steve Howe most of all. His brilliant solo interpretation of "To Be Over" proves that musicality and virtuosity need not conflict. He impressed technically, without seeming showy or hammy, because every effort was devoted to the music, rather than the musician. Throughout the evening, Steve maintained the perfect balance between hitting the licks we are programmed to crave, while providing enough improvisational creativity to make every song seem new again.
Wakeman was no slouch in this regard either, disappointing only in his by-the-numbers solo set, which while flawlessly executed, did not carry the sense of vitality that was the hallmark of most of the evening's performances. His best solo set can be found on "An Evening of Yes Music Plus", which featured a solo piano take on "Madrigal" that I found myself wishing had been included in this show.
This was perhaps my favorite "Whitefish" performance of all time, although the 9012Live CD version is a close contender. I would have to go back and check to see if they had ever previously included the beautiful extract from the seldom heard and under-rated "On The Silent Wings of Freedom" as part of "Whitefish". My only quibble is a rather abrupt and arbitrary transition back into "The Fish" at the end, especially when all of the other segues had been handled with much more subtlety. This was preceded by perhaps the most delicate and precise live performance of "Long Distance Runaround" heard to date.
Instead of trying to out-do or re-create previous live performances, Yes somehow managed to play it all like they had just written it yesterday, and that is a refreshing and unexpected gift.

given one choice to pick a YES DVD, this is the one. The show was well put together, the playing was incredible, and each band member showcased their talent in their solo spots.
The photography, sound and quality of the DVD is great, the show moves along at a good pace.
If your a YES fan, I'm sure you already own this DVD, if you're not, and are interested in viewing and listening to an amazing show - GET THIS!

I have nothing against Rabin (or Kayne, Buford, etc...) but the real Yes is (in alphabetic order) Anderson, Howe, Squire, Wakeman and White. So if you agree then just buy it and you won't regret it.
I skipped "Fish" for a while because I didn't feel like hearing it again but after finally watching it is a must see for all Yes fans.
Also there are a bunch of other songs I have never seen live (e.g. Turn of the Century, Ascend) which make it worth buying.

Funny because the good thing about it is also the problem: The guitar is too loud, and Alan White and specially Chris Squire are almost forgotten by the cameras and the sound mix.
My 2 favorites Yes DVDs are Symphonic Live and Live from the House of Blues (Alan White is killing in this one)
Hope it helps!

Neil's music and lyrics from my understanding has never promoted profanity, drugs, crimes, vulgarity, etc. Frankly, I think that a lot of singers and songwriters can learn something from him. I admit I've never meant Neil personally, but I'm told that he's a fine man.
I've always loved this music since I was little. My parents got me into Neil Diamond, and since then I now have three albums including this one.
Therefore, I think it will be fair to say, I liked Neil Diamond right from the start.
His Name is Yussel RabinovichReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-11-22
My memory goes back to age three if not earlier, and the music from The Jazz Singer and Neil's solo follow-up, On the Way to the Sky were already engrained pretty firmly into my conscience. (Subsequently, I was exposed to Heartlight, the Love at the Greek concert album, I'm Glad You're Here with Me Tonight, and His 12 Greatest Hits I & II. What initially slipped by me for a few years was that The Jazz Singer was actually a soundtrack album. Sometime when I was probably four years old, my parents tuned into Home Box Office, and we watched part of the film. I remember going into a saloon in Lake George, NY with my family that summer and fearing that a fight would break out like the one in the nightclub scene.
It wasn't until I was ten or eleven years of age when my father rented the film for me on VHS. I watched it obsessively, which is a habit I haven't managed to break to this day. I got a real kick out of Neil's contrastic performance of "Love on the Rocks" against the Keith Lennox character. The most moving parts were the hitch-hiking montage ("Songs of Life"), the reunion scene between Jess Rabinovich and Molly Bell ("Hello Again") and the magnificent reconciliation moment between Jess and his father ("My Name is Yussel"). Being born into a Jewish family and considering many choices I've made in life, the conflicts of interest between Jess and his father hit truly close to home. (Even before I came of age, I fostered a silent fear that my own father would one day disown me the way Cantor Rabinovich disowned Jess.) And, from what I've learned about Neil's life, the Jess character could only have been better portrayed by someone like Michael Landon. His acting is hardly wooden; he barely needed to act.
As a college-educated adult, I eventually came to re-embrace Neil's music with more of an analytical mind. Aside from learning to recognize the Guild guitars he played in the film (and the Ovation guitars he used during the 70's), I also made an effort to study the keyboard rigs used by Alan Lindgren and Tom Hensley. (I've long been interested to know which instruments they used during Love at the Greek; sounds like a Steinway piano, Fender Rhodes, two organs, Mellatron and an Oberheim synthesizer to me.)
Aside from their prowess as keyboard players, I was also quick to identify Alan and Tom's prowess as orchestral arrangers, especially Alan. The orchestration for "America" falls easily in line with Leonard Bernstein's renditions of Aaron Copeland compositions like "Hoedown" and "Fanfare for the Common Man." And, his composition with Neil, "Hello Again" establishes Alan as a composer/arranger on par with contemporaries like James Newton-Howard. As much as I'd love to meet Neil Damond himself, I'd also like to meet Alan Lindgren, Tom Hensley and guitarists Richard Bennett & Doug Rhone.
Okay, I'll bite. As much as I love the film and its music, I've got one point of hindsight criticism. When The Jazz Singer was filmed, Neil Diamond was thirty-nine years of age. As far as I could tell, no effort was made to make the Jess Rabinovich character seem younger. In the real world of showbiz, a thirty-nine-year-old Jess Rabinovich would probably have been crucified for trying to become a star that late in life.

Review Date: 2009-03-03
This DVD represents a live concert in Vegas. Read the other reviews to see how it's done...too long a story to re-tell, but it's NOT lip-synched; Sarah is the real-deal. How the heck she manages the costume changes is beyond me, but she looks a lot better in some of those outfits than girls half her age. Of course, Vegas is used to shows, but this is a SHOW....
The individual numbers are not important; what is important is the total effect. Her CDs are wonderful, but this is a whole different dimension. I should LOVE to see her live. Sarah has grasped the point that ALL music is really entertainment...she has a great voice, AND she knows what to do with it. Pure joy. Sarah is no Ponselle, but Ponselle was no Sarah. (And, before you argue my point about entertainment, Anna Netrebko is not shy about showing off great legs on the Opera stage, either). Grab this, and enjoy the ride.......
