Even though there have been so many personel changes over the years, this group has continued to produce some of the finest music ever. This is a good sampling of the GVB. I have always enjoyed their dramatic ballads, such as "I Bowed on my Knees" or "I Believe in a hill called Mt. Calvery." These are powerful spine tingling works that will not only entertain you, but will bless you over and over as the clear message of this music comes shining through!
Bill Gaither is very much a Gospel music revivalist. He has recorded many of the old Convention songs that were originally sung by groups like the Stamps, Imperials, Goodmans, and the Statesmen. He has exposed this music to a whole new generation that may have not otherwise heard this kind of powerful Gospel music!

Bette Midler does herself proud reprising these classic Clooney tunes.Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-08-30
Released back in 2003, "Bette Midler Sings The Rosemary Clooney Songbook" features 11 of the legendary singers most popular songs. Of course I was curious as to how the producers would approach this material. And while I was pretty sure that Bette Midler had the pipes to pull it off I wondered if this would be an album that I would only listen to just once or something I would be eager to enjoy again and again. After hearing this disc but once I can say without equivocation that I would definitely fall into the latter category. Furthermore, I can attest to the fact that there really is not a bad track on this album. There are fresh new arrangements of Clooney favorites like "This Ole House", "Memories of You" and "Hey There". A really pleasant surprise was Bette's marvelous duet with producer Barry Manilow on the old Kay Kyser hit "On A Slow Boat To China". And speaking of duets, much to my surprise my favorite cut on this disc just has to be the remarkable duet with Linda Ronstadt called "Sisters". This tune was originally recorded by Rosemary and her sister Betty Clooney and appeared briefly on the charts back in 1954. Rosemary Clooney also performed the song in the classic Bing Crosby holiday film "White Christmas". Now the very idea of Bette Midler attempting the Mitch Miller inspired pop hits "Come On-A My House" and "Mambo Italiano" seems rather improbable but Bette Midler manages to pull it off with grace and style and makes these silly little songs all her own.
Unfortunately, there is only about 31 minutes worth of music to be had on "Bette Midler Sings The Rosemary Clooney Songbook". The problem is that everything on this disc is so good that it leaves you longing for more. It certainly would have been nice to hear Bette Midler's remarkable voice on tunes like "Count Your Blessings (Instead of Sheep)", "I Could Have Danced All Night" and "Half As Much" to name but a few. That being said "Bette Midler Sings The Rosemary Clooney Songbook" is a first rate production. Indeed, this is a disc I can see myself playing frequently in the future. As a matter of fact I will be ordering my copy as soon as I finish this review. Very highly recommended!

Mad Love starts with it's title track, which is a good song/arrangement for Ronstadt to belt out. Elvis Costello's excellent tune Party Girl is next. Ronstadt does a fine job with it, and while the arrangement is a bit lacking if you ask me, it still works. The radio hit How Do I Make You is next and shows that new wave at it's best was very much a back to basics excursion in rock and roll; it seamlessly ties Buddy Holly to Elvis Costello in more ways than just eye-glasses. The old Hollies tune I Can't Let Go is next and Ronstadt and company do a very nice job with it; energetic and fun. The old Little Anthony and the Imperials classic Hurt So Bad ends side one (when albums used to have sides!). It's given a new (for 1980) sound, has a nice "atmospheric mood" and was the biggest hit single from the album.
Side two starts with Look Out For My Love - a sort of mid-tempo, hypnotic song, sung in a plaintive voice that's nevertheless effective. Cost of Love is next and is perhaps the weakest song in the set; a kind of "by the numbers" new wave-ish tune that while not terrible, is my least favorite. Justine follows next and is much better, a good vocal, some nice bass work and an emotional wallop. Costello's Girls Talk kicks off next. Not her best work, not her worst, Ronstadt and company should have made it into a hit single but ultimately, it's lacking just a bit. Perhaps not as rocking as Dave Edmund and Rockpile's version, which features lots of rhythm guitar, it's given a sort of playful tone and none the less is a fun song by singer and band and is interesting from the female point of view. EC's Talking in the Dark finishes the album - a so-so song which sounds like one of Costello's b-side throw-a-ways, Linda gives it an emotional "oomph" with accompanying synthesizer singing harmony with her on the chorus.
Curiously, back twenty-five to thirty years ago, pop music critics carried much more weight than they do today, perhaps like mainstream news organizations, who once had a lock on shaping public opinion, today there are many more points of view and outlets for opinion from expert to laymen alike. While a few big critics hit Ronstadt hard on this album, many more critics of lesser renown gave it good reviews. Elvis Costello himself cracked back when the album came out that he hated Ronstadt versions of his songs, but he also tore into her for her 1978 recording of his tune Alison - which most critics, unlike EC, liked. Ronstadt shrugged it off by remarking that Elvis was just being a brat.
All in all, I would give Mad Love a grade of "B". A final note: Strangely, I like the sound of this album much better when I listen to it with headphones and less so when I listen to it in conventional speakers. Perhaps, I have too much bass in the sound of my speakers, which has the effect of distorting/slowing the tempo of the songs. Maybe the album needs to be remixed. I find the volume on most of Ronstadt's recordings to be much too low when compared to other recordings.

"Some quiet evening we sit side by side
And we're lost in a world of our own.
I feel the glow of your unspoken love
I'm aware of the treasure that I own.
And I say to myself, it's wonderful, wonderful..."
... and being totally blown away by that glorious sound. That was my introduction to Johnny Mathis, at that time a relatively unknown kid 21 years old with a voice that was pure magic. You listened to that voice and just let it flow over you and you were instantly and utterly enchanted. I fell in love with "Wonderful Wonderful" (still my favorite of all his songs) and "It's Not for Me To Say" and "Chances Are", and the following spring "Johnny's Greatest Hits" was released, featuring the three songs above and nine more. Some of these recordings weren't really hits before they were featured on this album, but the album itself was a mega-smash. And with good reason. Besides the three above, there is a lovely little ballad called "When Sunny Gets Blue" that actually makes you feel like you're hearing rain fall, the hauntingly beautiful "The Twelfth of Never", and seven more that are timeless listening pleasure.
Mathis had some great help on this album in the form of terrific arrangements by Ray Conniff, Ray Ellis and other musical giants; but what makes Johnny Mathis Johnny Mathis is, purely and simply, That Voice. Every word is clear as a crystal bell and every note is perfect. That Johnny hit his peak so young is nothing short of phenomenal. He went on to have a successful career that spanned forty years, but he was never as good as he was in this album. If you only listen to one album by Johnny Mathis in your life, this is it.

Listen to "When I Am With You" This song has haunted me for years.
I bought this album when it was Vinyl....then 8-Track....then Cassette...then CD when these releases got to the marketplace. Although I have the CD..plus copies for the car; I purchased the above-mentioned track tonight...just didn't feel like hunting around here for the CD. Download is now in this laptop playing via WMP on repeat as I write this.
I first saw Johnny when he wasn't a "name" yet in some club in Oceanside NY (Long Island). His singing was marvelous but he had not yet developed much stage presence ..it looked like he was singing into a mike as if he was in a recording chamber.
He's now more "wonderful, wonderful" than ever....on disc and in person.

Review Date: 2007-09-15
The track set begins with one of Johnny's best songs ever, "Chances Are." "Chances Are" has an elegant arrangement for the harp, piano and strings while Johnny sings this flawlessly. "All The Time" has Johnny singing passionately of how he wants his one true love to always be at his side; Johnny handles the tempo changes like a pro and the musical arrangement lacks nothing--it's THAT good. Moreover, "The Twelfth Of Never" sports a great arrangement for the harp; Johnny performs "The Twelfth Of Never" with great sensitivity. Awesome.
"When Sunny Gets Blue" gives us Johnny singing a tender love ballad about how Sunny feels tremendously depressed unless she is in love; the strings and the harp carry the bulk of the melody. "Wonderful! Wonderful!" is a relentlessly upbeat melody that lets Johnny celebrate the pure joy of true love.
"It's Not For Me To Say" has a rather elegant arrangement for the piano; and Johnny croons this beautifully when he sings of his affection for his one true love; Johnny's character also hopes that their love will continue for a long while to come. "Wild Is The Wind" is a ballad about passionate love; the excellent chord changes and subtle tempo changes enhance the number. "No Love" continues along the same lines; and the CD ends strong with "I Look At You." The strings and the ladies on backup bolster "I Look At You" as Johnny sings of his love although he is too afraid of rejection to pursue a love affair with them. Excellent!
Johnny Mathis remains a giant amongst giants in the entertainment industry of the twentieth century. Johnny was blessed to receive an incredible voice that could stir many emotions easily in his adoring audiences; and if we're lucky he'll continue to entertain us with his masterful voice for many years to come.
Thank you, Johnny!

Anyway, there was a good looking blonde reporter named Tracy Smith talking about this band. She said they were one of her favorites. Most of my class laughed at her. It's not that POTUSA were necessarily lame, but it was "unique" to list them as a favorite. I'll forever associate this band with the cruel laughter of teenage Pantera fans.

"Strangers In The Night" features Frank at his very best; he sings this passionately and I rarely, if ever, hear a better rendition of this classic love ballad. Frank's excellent diction bolsters his performance; and his voice is full of warmth. "Summer Wind" is a romantic favorite of many men who like to dance with their sweethearts to this tune. Frank delivers "Summer Wind" without a superfluous note and this impresses me. I really like "Summer Wind" and I predict you'll like it, too!
"It Was A Very Good Year" is a slower tempo ballad that is reflective and romantic in its own way; Frank does justice to this song by performing it with great sensitivity. The musical arrangement is very well done as well. "Forget Domani" has a great flavor to it; Frank sings this to perfection and he breathes new life into it in a way I've never heard before!
"That's Life" was always one of my very favorite Frank Sinatra tunes; his relentless optimism (until the very last line of the song) is infectiously catchy and performed like the ultimate pro that Frank was! "That's Life" features a great organ arrangement and the backup vocalists harmonize very nicely. Frank really belts this out!
"When Somebody Loves You" features Frank singing effortlessly as the notes change quickly between major and minor; the lush musical arrangement is quite striking and the overall effect of "When Somebody Loves You" is quite strong. "This Town" gets the royal treatment from Frank who belts this out as strong as he ever could! The CD ends with Frank performing "Softly As I Leave You." "Softly As I Leave You" glistens like pure gold in Frank's capable hands.
The CD sure does have some incredible hits on it--but there's no way a single CD could ever capture Frank Sinatra's "Greatest Hits." They could have at least added an extra song or two; but they seemed not to care. What a shame!
Three and ½ stars for a great CD with a title that's misleading. This is too short to be called Frank's "Greatest Hits."

"Remarkable Girl" by Ted Weems & His Orchestra sounds wonderful; and when Country Washburn comes in to sing the lyrics this number takes off like a jet! "Remarkable Girl" is also noteworthy because it showcases an early recording by the great Ted Weems & His Orchestra. The brass is used very well in the musical arrangement, too. "I Wanna Be Loved By You" is a classic hit that some people may recognize even in these times; Helen Kane doesn't sing this rendition but The Broadway Nitelites and Vaughn Deleath do a sublime performance! There's also another great tune when we get "Miss Annabelle Lee (Who's Wonderful, Who's Marvelous)." "Miss Annabelle Lee (Who's Wonderful, Who's Marvelous)" gets the royal treatment from The Mike Speciale Orchestra with Billy Carola singing the lyrics. Sure, there's some surface noise on this track; but it still sounds very good anyway.
We also hear the classic tune, "Happy Days Are Here Again." This was the "theme song" for FDR's first campaign for the presidency; and it still sounds wonderful to my ears. The Ben Selvin Orchestra never misses a single note although unfortunately the CD manufacturers don't know who sang the lyrics to this song. Sorry, folks. "I Found A Million Dollar Baby (In A Five And Ten Cent Store)" is another adorable love song that I always enjoy hearing; this gets a fine interpretation by The Frank Auburn Orchestra along with a very young Benny Goodman! Similarly, "You're The Cream In My Coffee" sparkles with very little surface noise, if any; and I think you'll enjoy this number if you like this type of music. Frank Salvano sings "You're the Cream in My Coffee" to perfection--and beyond!
I never knew that "Who's Sorry Now?" went this far back; unfortunately this has surface noise but I hope that you'll enjoy this rendition anyway. Listen also for "What A Day;" I always love to hear this tune. Ted Weems and his band mates give this their all with Parker Gibbs singing very well. How these guys could turn out a tune! "She's Got It" is another number with a fine musical arrangement; when Parker Gibbs comes in this number shines! The CD also ends well with The Gene Kardos Orchestra performing "Red Headed Baby." This'll leave you wanting more!

While I love Tina and saw her previous "Wildest Dreams" Tour, I was so lucky to see her opening nite in Kansas City in October 2008 for this last tour. I mistakenly thought what I ordered was that performance, and that's why I ordered it. It's not folks!!! It's placement on the page is what I consider misleading.
I'm keeping it cuz it's still awesome, but it's NOT her most recent tour. Just be careful and knowledgeable about what you're ordering.
