I never saw Bela Fleck live until this December. I saw them at the Calvin Theater in Northampton. It was pretty amazing. I'm not a music genius like most of the crowd seems to be... so I didn't realize until just now (it's February and the song came on in iTunes) what throat singing really was. I guess I never listened closely, but Jingle Bells reprise... the melody is coming from his voice! Frickin awesome!

Anyways... that's my rant... it's pretty awesome. It's not a good album for people who don't appreciate music... I put it on for some friends and they didn't appreciate it.

Go see them live!!!

Who'd have thunk it? Bach on the banjo! Bela Fleck is brilliant, and this CD is a wonderfully offbeat take on a lot of holiday classics. I have to admit, the first track, an almost tribal take on "Jingle Bells," took some getting used too--but Fleck's bluegrass take on Leroy Anderson's "Sleighride" is infectiously fun.

"Ich will nur zu Ehren leben" (from Bach's Christmas Oratorio) is elegant and graceful--words not always associated with banjo music, I agree, but entirely appropriate here. And Fleck's take on Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" is full of mystery and wonder.

Just to demonstrate his and his Flecktones' versatility, he also includes tracks of everything from "The Hanukkah Waltz" and "Linus and Lucy" to "O Come, All Ye Faithful."

This one is a keeper!

"Jingle All the Way" is a joyous Christmas album from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. It manages to blend jazz, banjo, and Tuvan throat singing in staple Christmas songs. With all its variety, it's a delightful change of pace. Christmas albums can be quite generic. But not with Bela Fleck. "Jingle all the way" will have you dancing all 12 days of Christmas!

This CD has an eclectic collection of unusual tunes as usual for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. The tonal music was a bit much for some of my Christmastime guests.

I have been ordering Mancini cds lately because his music brings back a feeling when I was young. My parents had Mancini music on during their dinner parties, cocktail parties and of course everyone was smoking away.....mom and dad had those sterling silver cigarette boxes filled just like they filled the ice bucket! Ha! Remember those times? Anyway, this music puts me back in a time when I was cared for, safe and protected. What's funny is when our 26 year old son came home recently and heard the music for the first time he stopped, listened and said, "I like this music, makes the house feel happy." Yep, that just about sums it up.

With the title track, a Bacharach-David song first recorded by Dionne Warwick but hitherto not released as a single, and another classic (We've only just begun, which evolved from a TV jingle), the Carpenters established themselves in the pop charts around the world.

The album contains several other fine songs including Crescent moon, Mr Guder, Maybe it's you and Another song. A cover of Help! (Beatles) was originally considered for single release, but having already released another Beatles song (Ticket to ride) as a single from their debut album, the decision was probably wise. Three other excellent covers are Reason to believe (Tim Hardin), I'll never fall in love again (a Bacharach-David song that provided Bobbie Gentry with a British number one hit) and Baby it's you (one of the less famous songs from the Bacharach-David catalog).

Following the modest start to their career provided by their debut album (Offering, also known as Ticket to ride), this follow-up hit the big time. It's not difficult to understand why.

A surprisingly great CD.

I was 13 years old when this album was released. I was into rock bands like Deep Purple and the Grass Roots, and just starting to listen to Black Sabbath. So you could imagine my reaction when a neighbor friend of my parents gave me this tape for Christmas. First of all, at that time I had never heard of the Carpenters, and the only exposure to their music was some bank using "We've Only Just Begun" in their commercials. So I took one brief, two-song listen, and put it away. A couple years later, having trouble sleeping, I decided to put it in the tape player figuring it would bore me to sleep. And in that setting I couldn't believe how beautiful the music was. Instead of helping me sleep I must have listened to it three times. Although there are a few weak songs (hence the 4 star rating instead of a 5) there are some wonderfully produced and original sounding pieces as well.

Believe it or not, the two hits on this CD are by far not the best songs on this album. While popular as easy-listening pop songs, "We've Only Just Begun" and "Close to You" feel like they were produced solely to be hits. To me, the best part of the tape was side two which, if you look at the sequence of songs on the CD, started with "Baby It's You." Here you begin to find, with the possible exception of "Mr. Guder", a group of songs that just sound beautiful. Wonderful melodies, great harmonies, and above average lyrics set these songs way above the first six on the CD. My favorites are the aforementioned "Baby It's You" (a Burt Bacharach song that had been done by just about everyone), "Crescent Moon (showing Karen's ability to sing in a lower octave that you normally hear), and "Another Song" (an interesting mix of vocal & instrumental music). Other gems, "Maybe It's You", "Reason to Believe" and "I kept on Loving You" (Sung by Richard Carpenter).

Of course I would recommend this to any Carpenter fan, although I would be surprised if you didn't already have it. But also to fans of great and beautiful music. Even though I still prefer a harder guitar type of music I went ahead and bought this CD when my tape finally died and I still listen to it.

Probably their best before the "fame" took up their time....

"Close to You" is probably the most complete LP they put together. 12 songs, and all are great. The haunting arrangements, Karen's warm alto, this was the Carpenters shining moment. Once they hit the big time in 1970 with touring, etc. there really wasn't too much "studio time" allowed. (The next LP "Carpenters" did contain some classic tracks, but it was a slim LP, total play time about 29 minutes & songs like 'Druscilla Penny' and 'Saturday' are too sappy.) Close To You just shines with classic tracks like Reason to Believe, the gorgeous Crescent Noon and one of my faves, BABY IT's YOU. Karen was an unbelievable talent at just 20, her voice is amazing. (not to mention her drum playing) The later LPs seem to fall a bit short in quality, save for A Song For You, which was the last really good Carpenters LP in my opinion.
The "Now and Then" Lp in 1973 was saved by "yesterday once more", one of their best. But all of side 2 was just a medley of 1950s tunes. 1974 offered no new Lp, just the singles compliation. 1976's Kind of Hush, was bland, lacking texture. But check out CLOSE TO YOU, (and A SONG FOR YOU) you won't be let down.

This album was the follow-up to their debut ("Offerings"), and the sound of their music was far better. The title track and the opening track "We've only just began" were the hits at the time, and today this songs are truly Carpenter's classics. The album also includes some very catchy tunes, among them "Reason to believe", "Mr.Guder", the Burt Bacharach songs ("I'll never fall in love again" and "Baby it's you", and a version of a Beatles song ("Help!")that was fantastically made.
My personal favourite is "Crescent Noon", a song that gives Karen the oportunity to use her rich low vocal register, it's a song I never get tired to listen. Finally, "Another Song" is a very good number that closes the album, with a fine vocal work, courtesy of Karen, followed by an instrumental part (flutes, keyboards and drums), this song isn't a classic but deserves to be.
As a curiosity, no guitarist is credited but there's an evident guitar part on "I kept on loving you", so I will thank who tell me who was the guitar player.

Karen and Richard sold these songs without even trying--BRAVO, KAREN AND RICHARD !!!

Close To You is an excellent album by Karen and Richard Carpenter. They made outstanding music together and it still stands the test of time. Hearing this music brings back so many fond memories for me as I heard so many of these tunes originally on the radio. The quality of the sound on this CD is very good; and I really like the artwork, too.

"We've Only Just Begun" begins the album with a smash hit for Carpenters; they play and sing this beautifully and the number is very sensitive. Karen sings this with so much passion; you truly feel that she is singing to you and only you as you hear her sing. In addition, Karen sings so sweetly about the joys of starting a love affair or a marriage while still managing to acknowledge in the lyrics that there is still some uncertainty about the road that lies ahead for her and her one true love. Great! "We've Only Just Begun" is truly one of their greatest hits ever; and I could never tire of listening to this ballad. "Maybe It's You" is a number that stuns me with its beauty; Karen sings this with panache and Richard's music is perfect to go along with Karen's vocals. The lush musical arrangement makes "Maybe It's You" a classic Carpenters song.

"Reason To Believe" is a soft pop number from the early `70s that still holds its own very well even today all these years later; and "Reason To Believe" puts Karen and Richard Carpenter squarely front and center--and that's wonderful. "Help" is a sublime cover of this Beatles song; Karen sings this with heart and soul. You can really hear Karen's delving into the song to bring out her personal emotions that, as she sings this song, make this a wonderful rendition of this number second only to the rendition by The Beatles themselves. Wonderful! In addition, "(They Long To Be) Close To You" charms me with its beauty; and I cannot understand why anyone would think that music like this is "corny." "(They Long To Be) Close To You" is a very sweet tune and we really see Karen Carpenter open up and let herself perform this ballad with her heart and lots of feeling. "(They Long To Be) Close To You" is clearly a major highlight of this album.

"Baby It's You" has a very sensitive arrangement; and listen for "I'll Never Fall In Love Again." "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" is a Burt Bacharach/Hal David number that Dionne Warwick made so famous; when Karen and Richard do their cover of this classic ballad Bacharach must have surely been proud! Karen sings this to perfection; and her uncanny sense of timing impresses me, too.

"I Kept On Loving You" has that early `70s flavor to it; and the number works very well. "I Kept On Loving You" is a solid number and those chorus lyrics fit in well, too. The album ends with "Another Song;" "Another Song" is a very special number and it makes a fine ending for this album.

Overall, Carpenters fans will love this album if they don't have it already. This is also great for people who enjoy contemporary pop vocals.

This is one hep swinging double cd set!
Put on your zoot suit, slick your hair back, bust your conk on this mess and swing out Jack!

The Big Bands are wonderfully represented on this set, everything from Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, The Andrews Sisters, Harry James, and many many more. The quality is good but I'm weird that way, I actually enjoy the old sound and too much "remastering" takes away from the overall sound...

You will NOT be disappointed with this set!!

Its solid swing!

This is an amazing DVD. Unlike the usual band DVD that has a few videos and live performances, this includes a documentary-style film about Avenged Sevenfold's rise to fame and bunches of easter eggs to keep you entertained, such as M. Shadows relating the story of his dog eating 'special' brownies and describing his nude scene from Seize the Day. A great addition to any Fallen collection.

This is Enrique Iglesias at his best. The mix of this CD is fantastic. In one song he mixes his style with hip-hop, and is amazing. The first 2 songs were uncomfortably sensual for me, but having said that, they are my favorites. I can't explain it. He just sings so well that you lose yourself in the music and your imagination.

Insomniac seems to have a slower pace than than his previous efforts, but it all blends together quite well, with tracks oscillating between exuberant dance anthems and softly spoken, well arranged ballads. The album concludes, as per usual, with a series of earlier tracks in Spanish and two remixes.

With this album, I'm always reminded of a commercial for the MTV show Rob and Big, where the two leading men enter a drive-thru car wash where no one can see them and blast the song "Do You Know (The Ping Pong Song)" on maximum volume as they dance in their seats and sing along. Once the machine wash is finished and their car exits the tunnel, they turn to one another and agree to keep it a secret. Yes, I'm going for a point here. While the past few years have seen the American airways turn away from the lighter pop that would have ascended the charts in the 90s, there's little resisting the fact that it's still fun and, frankly, good music.

Ultimately, if you accept it for what it is, fun and undemanding pop, it's actually a quite enjoyable, well produced and well executed album.

Great Album!! 7 good songs.

Wish I Was Your Lover, and 10. Stay Here Tonight, are all great songs, it has a good blend of a great beat, good lyrics and the soulful voice of Enrique that puts these songs among his greatest yet and it rivals his past albums. I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of Enrique and a fan of good music in general.

El álbum contiene los temas 'Ring My Bells', 'Push', 'Do You Know (The Ping Pong Song)', 'Somebody's Me', 'Tired of Being Sorry', 'On Top Of You', 'Miss You', 'Wish I Was Your Lover', 'Little Girl', 'Sweet Isabel', 'Stay Here Tonight' y 'Don"t You Forget About Me'.

La única canción que he escuchado con atención es `Dímelo' y creo que esa versión es más interesante que `Do You Know (The Ping Pong Song)'.

I wore out the tape of this album years ago, and at last now have it on CD. It's still the perfect stress antidote!

One of the things I remember about the first time I heard this CD, I heard "Falling" and I said to myself, "OK, this is an album worth taking a chance on", which is what I used to do with CDs - if I wanted to hear new music, if I wanted to have something fresh and/or different or just new to hear, I would think that if one or two cuts were "decent", I would go for it and lay out the sheckles and take a chance. Sometimes it was a burn and a waste of money, and sometimes it was like buried treasure. I remember I then heard "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart" and said to myself oh that is sweet, that is worth the price of admission, I will go for that. Have you ever heard a riff, a hook, a slice of a song and said You know what, I'll go for the CD just to have THAT, that one cut or hook or sound. That happened for me with the first two measures of "Rockin'". As a matter of fact, I have repeated it on my ipod several times. Listened to it and just said to myself that I wanted that mood, that feeling One More Time.

Listen to the samples and you will see what I mean. If it ain't your taste well what can I tell you different Strokes for different Def Leppards know what I mean?

I wish I could have 5 more CDs of this music. The weakest track is the one that's the closest to "normal" rock, Rockin' Back Inside My Heart, but it's not bad. The sudden crescendo in Into the Night is a bit annoying, but it can easily be edited out with Audacity. This is one of my favorite CDs. Musically, it suggests the 50s, but with a super soft focus dreamland filter. Do yourself a favor and get the real CD, not mp3s, which will take away all the space. If you encode it for an iPod, stick with the 320k bitrate.

This album is so beautiful, pop and blues classics done up in k.d.'s "smooth jazz with soul" style, the songs linked by references to cigarettes, beautiful production that gets it exactly right (piano, strings that you can hear individually, banjo), and, of course, that seductive, buttery voice. She could sing the telephone book and make it heartbreaking. My favorite of k.d.'s.

Mom;
Says she is the best, I am not into this style of music, I am a Jazz and Blues guy, but my Mom is a artist and very particular about what she listens to.
So you can take the 5 Stars from her word as solid....

I have been a huge fan of K D Lang's for a long time now and this CD proved to be as interesting as I had hope for. When I first heard it I just laughed disbelieving my situation since I quit smoking after smoking most of my life...........and had the usual demons to deal with when you have an addiction.........but DRAG turned out to be a CD mainly concerned with smoking!!!! I laughed so hard the first time I listened to it but after that when I would get a craving I put this on and had a smoke mentally......it has kept me off the cigarettes and proved to me yet again that K. D. never ceases to amaze me and has kept me constantly entertained over the years not only with that incredible voice but the sense of humor that is ever present...........way to go!

First, I want to say that K D Lang has an absolute gorgeous voice, sultry, and her style is jazzy and cool, but some of the songs were a little slow. The valley of the dolls theme was why i purchased this and it didnt dissapoint, Smoke Rings was great, with an Hawaiian feel. I think the theme was interesting too. She is so underrated.

KD Lang plays with a very, very loose concept on "Drag," a collection of songs that have some connection to smoking. That connection is, at times, very fleeting (like "The Air That I Breathe" or "Theme from The Valley of The Dolls") or vivid, like "Don't Smoke In Bed." The real thread here is the languid pace of it all, with Craig Street's production layering everything with smoky, sensual torch-song arrangements. When it works, like the opening "Don't Smoke In Bed," it plays like the most atmospheric of movie soundtracks. When it doesn't (Steve Miller's signature song "The Joker"), it's just awful.

But there are three letter-perfect songs here, "The Air That I Breathe," "Valley of the Dolls" and "Don't Smoke In Bed," that prove Lang's skill at covering Roy Orbison was no fluke. It also came out better a few years down the road when she did interpretations of other Canadian artists on "Hymns of the 49th Parallel." What might have driven this rating up to a fourth star would have been an uptempo song or two; the "Drag" title starts to take on an unintended third meaning.

Still, you keep coming back for that voice. Lang is, no question in my mind, one of the best female voices the 80's produced. She's on a par with Annie Lennox in that category, and the best work on "Drag" (or "Ingénue" or "Reintarnation") maintains her standard of excellence.

I was disappointed by this production but perhaps that was because I was expecting something different. Sinatra's life and growth was outlined from the early years but I found it repetitive and a little tedious. There is not much Sinatra fans don't know about his life. What I really wanted was the hear him sing! Why couldn't the producers have played the songs in the sequence they were recorded and weave the story around them.

One scene showed him sitting on a stool saying how wonderful the song he was about sing was ... unfortunately, we never heard it! The same thing happened more than once and was extremely frustrating.

If you want to hear The Man sing then this is not the collection for you. Stick to the CDs.

This is probably as definitive a set of "extended bio" as you will be seeing in a while. Since the original set comprised of 6 VHS tapes (which I also still own), the video quality on the newer interviews (Jeanne Carmen, Joey Bishop and others) are pretty standard to a late 80s set. However, due to questionable (read: poor condition) source material, the video quality for the "Colgate" "Frank Sinatra Show" and the promotional footage for Sinatra's movies are substandard. Very soft, almost kinescope video footage for a nearly 60 year old TV ad or stage footage is acceptable to a certain extent.
The narrator seems to be reading from a script that doesn't offer many revalations, I'm afraid. The way he phrases sentences together, one sometimes thinks he's summarizing (a la E! THS) an event and allow the video and/or audio finish the rest of the thought.

All in all, it's a good comprehensive collection of video footage, though I would certainly like to have seen more of the Frank/Ava video footage and pictures as opposed to "Their marriage was one of turbulence" and then move onto an affair he had with Juliet Prowse. Certainly Frank and Ava were the Bradgelina of the 50s, weren't they? Why no more attention to that than there was for the Kennedy afillation?
