The past several years definitely haven't brought so much feeling to classic R&B music. It has really been more about acts that have been about looks and the way that they dance like Ciara, Ashanti, and Usher to name a few. Nevertheless, it is very sad that there really isn't as much diversity. It sometimes makes me feel more interested in classic music from soul greats like Stevie Wonder. Although there have been many records that sound distincitive from him, many people in this generation really who are more into Kelly Clarkson, really don't know how diverse and universal his classic gems really are on the radio, and how much they continue to influence so many great singers. This documentary shows how much one of his most gifted records was ever showcased to the public.

Classic Albums: Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key Of Life, is a well-conjured 1997 documentary, which was recently televised on the VH1 Classic channel that reflects what made this Motown classic into a worldwide smash record, and how diverse the songs were all thought of. The documentary highlights Stevie, Motown founder Berry Gordy, and all the musicians who were a part of this landmark 1976 record, including keyboardist Herbie Hancock. The documentary also includes Stevie and company re-recording classic tracks including I Wish, Isn't She Lovely, Past-time Paradise and how it was later sampled by Coolio for his #1 smash Gangsta's Paradise. The show was remastered very well, and brings out a real feeling of classic Soul music. The feeling is great and the music is just as lively as it was released years ago.

All in all, Classic Albums, the documentary series from BBC has made a great number of documentaries reflecting some of the best music in the industry, and reflecting on Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life is absolutely no acception. I definitely recommend this documentary for any Stevie Wonder fan or any Motown fan, or for those who really have missed a great era of classic music. I loved watching this documentary on VH1 Classic, and if you haven't seen it yet, you really don't know what great records like this one are made of, otherwise it is just a past-time mistake.

I teach a course on the History of Rock Music and this DVD will be the centerpiece on 70's funk. Great interviews with Herbie Hancock, Berry Gordy and the backup band(Mike Sembello is crazy). Excellent classic footage of Stevie and great interviews on the making of the record. They also recreate some tracks and show great footage of Stevie rockin' out on the drums, of whick I love, cuz I'm a skin beater myself. Great stories of each song, like Village Ghetto Land, are included with interviews of Stevie and the lyricist. Overall, it sheds much light on one of the greatest records ever. Stevie lovers will pop a musical boner over this one!!

This was really informative and interesting. The only problem I really had with it was the fact that Stevie didn't speak as much as I would have liked. I am more than a little intrigued by him and would have enjoyed listening to him talk about his ideas and views on the issues he expressed in the songs more. I was aware of his sense of humor which was touched on a bit throughout the film. He's an interesting character and I really was expecting a bit more from him actually (Berry Gordy and Quincy Jones' comments minimalized would have been great). They didn't cover all the songs which would I was surprised about. A couple of my favorites, Joy inside my Tears and All Day Sucka were not mentioned AT ALL and these are not classics, as singles, but worthwhile to talk about, I thought. Anyway, if one is a fan of Stevie, a true fan, and owns the album, having this documentary is a must.

Every song is worth checking out and I can't say that about ANY of their other albums. At first, I thought this was weird and many of the tracks were disposable. Boy, was I so f'in wrong.

Brandon's vocals and harmonies are laced with the most-awesome, comforting qualities I've yet to hear in other rock bands. I find that they are a true Rock or Metal band. No one comes close.

Sure Coldplay, old Maroon 5 and Evanescence are decent but they don't come close. Well, maybe Maroon 5 does back in their prime in 2002 with Songs About Jane but that's it.

I love all of the songs.

My favorites however, in order are:

Made For TV Movie (one of their very best. Sexy to a tee)
Here In My Room (has ALWAYS been a fav of mine. Love the slowed-down, soothing and lulling effect...)
Talk Shows On Mute (Very truthful)
Megalomaniac (heavier than expected. Love the f-bombs. \m/
A Crow Left of the Murder (I love his sexy vocals. Can't get enough of obsessing over it)
Smile Lines (Great in spades.)

4.5 stars.

It did take me a while to get this latest piece of art from this amazing band, but it's happened. While I instantly loved S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself, and Mourning View, it took me a few listens to absolutly love this album. When I first listened to it, the first, and only song that felt like Incubus was Megalomaniac. That dissapointed me, because its the album opener. But after my latest listen, I listened more critically, and now relize that this is yet another Incubus classic. The songs have a grand structure that their other albums lacked. They are less poppy, and more gritty sounding. The one HUGE problem I have with the album is that the bass is hardly audiable through Mike Einziger loud guitars. Einziger's work is among his best on this album, don't get me wrong, he's one of my favorite guitarists. The drumming is insanly fast and well paced and varried. Boyd's vocals are perfect for the songs, and his lyrics are refreshingly different. Incubus is one of the most talented bands in this day and age of no-talent acts. The fact that they change through every album they make proves they have a vast array of musical varriety. i hope that their new album (supposedly coming out late this year) is as good as this, and past releases. The album closer asks "This is it, did you have a good time?".....yes Incubus, yes i did.

This is the stuff!!! What an awesome production. If you really like to blast music 5.1 Digital and out your awesome surround sound system, this album is for you!! Incredibly rich and raw, incredible effects traveling around the speakers in my room, bass shuddering the walls, and my whole insides quivering with the rush that only Incubus can produce! This is really a completely different experience than just an audio CD in Dolby or something. Close your eyes and you'll think you're listening them jamming in your room. But if you just want that regular CD than the other side of the DVD contains the CD.

The DVD side has the whole album plus videos of Lollapalooza, Bridge Benefit, While We Were Out, and Brandon's Injury. A must have the music-experience-enthusiast and psychedelic journeyman!

While this contains the exact same special features as the special edition, it's still worth buying for the surround sound included on the DVD side. This is Incubus' much anticipated follow-up to 2001's Morning View. While not garnering especially high praises this is definitely a worthy follow up. Anybody that is trashing this CD probably hasn't given it a chance to prove itself. Only after a few listens will you truly appreciate the brilliance that is brought to the table here. The production isn't polished at all, it's very raw. So much so that you can actually hear hand claps in a few songs. Personally, I think this unpolished side of Incubus is nice, I like it a lot.

With this release Incubus has matured even more than they let on in Morning View. You really wouldn't guess it with songs like Smile Lines and Leech though. Those two songs strike me as classic Incubus (though I realize I might be the only one that thinks that). Songs like Beware! Criminal, Agoraphobia, Zee Deveel, and Talk Shows On Mute strike me as different to Incubus' style. These songs lyrically are extremely strong but when first listening to them they seem stale, like they shouldn't be included on this CD. But over time I am willing to guarantee that at least one of the aformentioned songs will be one of your favorites. Every song on here has something special about it, Sick Sad Little World being the odvious stand-out with it's tremendous guitar solo. Not enough good things can be said about Mike's guitar work, it is incredible on this CD, though it doesn't seem to be getting the response I would think it should be getting. He experiments more with his pedals and style of playing more on this release than Morning View and even Make Yourself. You can tell this by listening to the solos on Sick Sad Little World and Priceless in particular. Brandon also kicks it up a notch and delivers vocally his best offering so far, and he uses his voice well too. As always Kilmore's turntables create an atmosphere to the music while never really busting out. Jose is at the top of his game on this release too, he seems to deviate from his treaded path and tries something new with this CD. And the new addition, Ben Kenney, fits in very nicely with the crew. While the bass isn't as prominent as it once was, it is very good nonetheless.

The DVD side is, much to my surprise edited, at least the one I got was. But other than that it's very entertaining with it's four live performances--Pistola, Megalomaniac, A Crow Left Of The Murder, and Talk Shows On Mute. The While We Were Out featurette is very funny as is with all Incubus behind the scenes footage though. I particularly liked the part where Jose talks about his new car, histerically funny. And of course Brandon's Injury. This is the part that is edited, which bugs me because I love hearing the way Brandon curses here. Also, if you have surround sound speakers wired to your DVD player than you are in for a treat, the CD sounds phenominal.

A couple of my favorite songs on here are Megalomaniac, Beware! Criminal, Zee Deveel, and Made For TV Movie. Anybody who truly appreciates Incubus' music will definitely seek refuge in this CD. It's got a bit of everything in it, so enjoy.

Enjoy Incubus!

'A Crow Left of the Murder' may have only taken five weeks to complete in the studio, but it sounds so good, you wont even notice it. I was actually kind of suprised by this album. I didnt expect it to be this good. You may have read some negative reviews saying stuff like 'Its dissapointing' or 'Its no 'Make Yourself'. Its NOT dissapointing. Its also not just another Make Yourself, no, its its own record. The first two times I listened to it I didnt think it was very amazing. But around the third time, I thought it was really good. Plus, you can even plant a tree in the Incubus garden. Incubus is growing enough trees to replace all the trees they used by creating this album. It tells you how to plant a tree and the info in the booklet. This is also one of the rare cds where the free DVD included is actually good. I like all the features on the DVD. I would reccomend that Incubus fans buy this cd. Enjoy Incubus!

Well anyway, thats my same review from last February, (yep, in 2004). Why did I simply just copy paste it? Because this cd is the same damn thing as that version! Even the other side of the dual disc the same. I wouldent reccomend buying it twice, even if you are a hardcore fan of the band. For those who havent purchased it yet, though, then be my guest. Great album.

Freestyle Fusion Fireworks

When the double album was initially released, each side contained an extended piece from critical junctures in the ever-changing vision of fusion; Great Expectations/Orange Lady, Lonely Fire (Bitches Brew), Go Ahead John (A Tribute to Jack Johnson) and Ife (On the Corner).

The CD took the original 98:45 and expanded it to 142:24 with Recollections (a reworking of In a Silent Way), Trevere, The Little Bull Frog and Yaplet.

Though oftentimes dismissed as being filler, the textures of each soundscape from the original album are extraordinary, as the additional four numbers bolster the peek into the oftentimes freestyle approach of taking a concept and jamming to fusion fireworks.

Davis was moving swiftly and paving a trail that he dared others to follow. The pace in the chase has yet to slow down.

Ambient Meditative Formless Art By a True Master

I regret not listening to this earlier. But I may have not been ready for it when it came. I got into jazz when Jazz-Rock was starting to get a bad name. The Prog-Rock form had become ball-and-chain that caused both Jazz Purists and those searching for a valid creative art form to turn the other way. Pop Jazz, or Fusion, would later become even more formulaic than Rock itself.

Where could Jazz go, in the late 60s? It had transcended form with Free Jazz. Miles knew where it should go. Joe Zawinul knew. Take the heavy electric instrumentation and fuse it with world-class percussion and keep it free from form.

If you listen to Great Expectations and many other cuts on Big Fun, they are largely meditative, and ambient in nature. Sure, there are visitations and re-visitations to the form of melody of Miles' trumpet entering and leaving at times, but overall the sonic landscape resembles more of a living entity--an organic ocean of sound. Waves pass over the listener and if you don't float on this peaceful and funky soup of sound, you'll drown.

The search for a song-form or a repetitive verse chorus aaba song-form with which to hold onto, is something that most listeners take for granted. If you don't have the teat of the rigid form to suck on, then you'll cry and put the music down, which is what critics did back when Miles moved beyond jazz, really. Miles recognized himself first and foremost as an artist and musician--not as simply a Jazz trumpet player, or even a great band-leader, although he was those things. Those who would shortly criticize him for leaving behind his bread-and-butter, were mad because he didn't let them suck on the teat of tried-and-true form.

But Miles was an artist who destroyed the last form of the medium by switching instrumentations and letting-in the age-old perfection of space. He was always a master of space. This album is as much a Miles-stone as Kind Of Blue, and In A Silent Way. It is potentially a deeply spiritual experience to hear this album and it is very personal.

Music and artistry transcending the bounds of time and space as only the great Master could achieve it. Listen to it! You can hear yourself inside it, and in doing so, you can move on from demands that that the music take forms.

In allowing the music to simply BE, you can free yourself. Let yourself go, and become empowered by this beautiful album of sound.

This music is light years ahead of any Jazz that has been made since the time of its release to present day...the only other jazz artist to even venture out this far was Sun Ra. It can be said with confidence that the last great Jazz Giant was Miles. This is not to dismiss other great jazz artists during that time or since then, but all who come after are only disciples.

No one explored and pushed the music forward, in contemporary terms, more the Sir Miles. This is probably one of the best records of the so called "electric" period before he went on hiatus for 5 years. Stand out tracks is the beautiful "Lonely Fire" a deep probing track that is almost trance like and "Go Ahead John", which is sonically unique and a great example of what can be produced by free artistic expression.

Miles was also on the forefront of album cover artistry, being one of the first artists to demand to have black images on his records sleeves, which was unheard of up until the mid-60s. The Big Fun LP cover is one of my favorites, for obvious reasons.

I'm not big on fusion, but I can tell you that Big Fun is one of my favorite albums from the period, along with In a Silent Way. One of Miles' more misunderstood works, and I'm glad it was given such a good reissue.
The record starts off with Joe Zawinul's best song (at least his best song with Miles), Great Expectations. Recorded shortly after Bitches Brew, it's a two-part suite, the second half being the Weather Report classic Orange Lady. It's arguably the best song on the album: twenty-seven minutes, and I don't want it any shorter. I especially like the Indian instrumentation.
Next up is the slow, spacey, funky Ife, an outtake from the On the Corner sessions. I really wish Miles had decided to include it on that album, as it could have saved it from being a total disaster. Recollections (again coming from the period just after the Bitches Brew sessions) is next up, a moody Zawinul classic. This, along with three other songs (I'll get to those), can only be found on the CD version of Big Fun. It's a collector's item, but it's also a very good piece of music. Trevere (yet another Brew-era outtake, and again previously unreleased) follows this, and really it's the album's only bad point. I hate the stupid haunted-house organ.
Then it's back to the good stuff. Go Ahead John (the lone outtake from the Jack Johnson sessions found on this LP) is my other favorite here. It's like Hendrix, if Hendrix had collaborated with Miles (and he probably would have, had he lived longer - the two were friends, of course). Lots of heavy guitar on that song. I've heard it's supposed to be an embryonic take of Right Off, but I disagree: it doesn't have the dated-sounding organ that ruins the otherwise stellar composition, and there's no uncredited Sly Stone borrowings. One fine song!
Lonely Fire (once again coming from the post-Bitches Brew sessions) is another. One of Miles' signature pensive, haunting ballads; it reminds me of Brew's Sanctuary, only it's so much better.
The Little Blue Frog is from the same sessions as Lonely Fire and most the rest; a good funk-rocker, though it drifts a bit.
Yephet makes for still another standout performance; a ten-minute moody Indian funk song. Very good!
Oh, and the liner notes are worthwhile - very informative, good Bennie Maupin essay, and great photos! So listen closely, and have big fun.

Why does E-40 keep making these sick albums? Cause He Can! Man I tell ya, this is one of E-40's best albums, maybe even THEE best. Not too many artists can match E-40's style, as a matter of fact no one can spit it like Charlie Hu$tle. Every song on this CD is tight the beats are crazy, this is definitly the best production ever on an E-40 album. And of course 40-Watta comes with his ever-so-sick, one-of-a-kind rapping style. For all of you who say that E-40 raps too fast, he's not rappin' too fast yall just listenin' too slow (that's real). He even puts the lyrics in the CD booklet for all you squares out there. Like I was saying all the tracks are sick and there's no skits, so you don't have to skip anything. The songs that really stand out are; L.I.Q., ...They Nose, Seasoned, Earl That's Yo' Life, Rules & Regulations, Big Ballin' With My Homies, and Ghetto Celebrity. There are also a lot of great guest appearances by Jayo Felony, C-Bo, Sauce Money, Fat Joe, Cash Money Millionairs, and of course The Click. I'm from the Bay Area and that's probably why I like E-40 so much, but I like all kinds of rap. It just seems to me that people are always saying that there are too many copy cats in the rap game. Well, if you want something original E-40 is your man!

Not many people out here in Massachusetts like Earl 'E-40' Stevens, and that's their loss! The man is an incredible MC, one of the greatest to grace a mic, and he's in top form on this banger. The production is funky, and e-40 is relentless with his lyrics. I recommend this not only to gangsta rap fans, but fans of real hip hop, too. Give it a few listens, even if you are Joe Art School Backpack, this stuff will grow on you.

An amazing album...one of the best of any genre. DEEP EastBay Cali Street Funk. The beats are sick, production super tight, E-40 at the top of his, or anyone else's, game. He's spittin, as usual, on totally another level...flows like water while stayin hard as nails and hot as fire...too fast only if you're listenin too slow. Listen to this one and then listen again. This is deep.

I bought this CD for a friend who just bought a new Hammond B-3. We put it on during our Xmas party and it rocked the house!! I know we played it 3 times through without a break. If you have a Hammond or just like the sound, this is THE CD for you!

Mind-boggling

This collection of lovingly-selected Hammond organ feature tunes is a must-have for anyone who shares the addiction for the sounds of electro-mechanical music. It's not only brilliant, it's historic.

I'm not guaranteeing you'll like every cut on the CD; there are one or two that I find a bit tedious. You may not love every track... but even my less favorite tracks are still salient in that they contribute to the full-round picture of the capabilities of Hammond consoles and artists.

If you have a jazz fan or any keyboardist in your circle of friends, this would be a great gift.

If you love the Hammond B3, you'll love this collection.
A great sampling of various styles, each with it's own
"twist". From Mike Finnegan To Art Neville you'll love
this CD

Make no mistake.......this is a great album. If you like the Hammond-Leslie sound then this is a must buy. I liked all but one song but it hasn't dampened my view. The songs cover everything from clean to distorted sounds. A pleaser for most styles. Just remember.......the Hammond sound ain't squat without the LESLIE. Let's quit forgetting Don and move him to the front page!

Couldn't ask for more

I chuckled when reading other reviews on this CD (Organ-ized). So much indignant sniffing and left-handed compliments. Want the nitty-gritty of this CD? Well, read on, please ..........

For those of you who love the sound and feel of the B3, you must have this CD. For players, the same. For those curious about what all the fuss is about, you won't go wrong in adding this to your collection. For B3 sophisticates and snobs .............. well there is no hope for you anyway, so you may as well buy it too just to give you something to denigrate (no offense folks :)

The lowdown on this CD = it rules! Every selection, regardless of the gernre', is a classic example of the best that can be extracted from this instrument.

For those who have not actually played this instrument, consider this: it is a massive structure made of wood and wire. It smells of oil. When you sit and play it, it rumbles. You get the feeling that it is alive (organic?). It takes you over. It can require the use of both hands, both feet, and your knee (for the leslie switch). It is unlike any other instrument on the planet.

There is plenty on this CD for anyone to love and hate, but it all has this underlying secret: B3 players in their prime are passionate. They can rock you like no other medium.

Critisms? Okay, there are no tracks by Keith Emerson, nor Barbara Denerlein or a number of other premier players. There is a goodly representation of cajun-style organ, perhaps to the detriment of others that could have been represented. But this by no means detracts from the range presented, from the sublime to the demented, from the beautiful to the possessed, it's all here, masters at their best.

Don't listen to these tracks once. Play them a few times before you add it to the rack. If you do, I'd be willing to bet that this will become a staple of your discography.

Listen to this disc in your car. As February 2007 finally arrives, this makes me hopeful about Weather Underground. G brings everything that 100th Window lacked: Funk, rocksteady, swing, swagger. Mighty, mighty grooves, Leftfield's best song ever, and Aretha making it all look easy. I guess for her it is easy.

Enthusiastically recommended.

I am a Massive Attack/reggae fan and my local record store guy suggested I try daddy G out. It's been in my cd player ever since. If you like trance, reggae, soul, r&b, with a little twist of euro underneath...all mixed together smooth deep and delicious ....you'll love this one too.

One of the best things about the DJ Kicks collection is the way it allows the mixers/producers/DJs creating them to really be creative, and give props to their influences. One of the more outstanding examples of this is Daddy G's mix. Starting with obscure tracks from Willie Williams and Melaaz, he segues into a black box mix of Tricky's suffocatingly dense "Aftermath", and never looks back. He also gives plenty of face time to his day job in Massive Attack, featuring originals (including "I Against I" with Mos Def, only available on the Blade II soundtrack, and a barn-burner in its own right) and their remixes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Les Negresses Vertes. With favorites by Aretha Franklin, Leftfield and Foxy Brown's anthemic "Oh Yeah" rounding out the mix, it establishes itself as a seductive reggae/dub/R&B/Euro conglomeration, and definitely a top-tier collection in a long line of prestigious mixes. Definitely one to cherish and listen to during summer nights.

97% was recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Recording Studios between 1977 to 1995, so there's no need to tell you how great the sound is (if you want more proof ask some die-hard jazz fans or jazz collectors). EVERY CUT is a greasy experience to your ears and hips! Includes some of the Hammond B-3 Masters like: Richard 'Groove' Holmes, Jack McDuff, and Charles Earland...Wait!!!, There's more! Guest Hammond B-3 Organists are:
Big John Patton, Mickey Tucker, and John logan. How about this for Frontmen: guitarist; Jimmy Ponder, saxophonist; Willis Jackson, and saxophonist; Houston Person!!! Want more???...., o.k., how about these Sidemen (Sidekicks): Idris Muhammad, Grady Tate, and others.

Be forwarned the track "Walking The Dog" by Jack McDuff appears on another Compact Disc entitled: "Jazz That Swings II", but it works equally as well on this project too!, so you'll live through this repeat. Where this disc open with an Excerpt of "Shipping Out" by Houston Person that clocks in at 2:55 (Two Minutes and Fifty-Five Seconds) WHY???, when there is a 11:00+ (Eleven Minutes, Plus) version on his 'Original' album!!! Maybe (Just maybe) because this track strats with a saxophone solo for about 4:00 (Four Minutes), but the long version could have been the last track, so there is no excuse putting this short (Excerpt) version found on this release.

Now understand this...THIS IS INDEED AN OVERALL HAMMOND B-3 ORGAN PROJECT!!! This is the music you'd hear at somebody's Bar-B-Q Party, as in Beef, Chicken, Pork And Hot Dogs, along with Beer & Hard Liquor, Oh! and let's not forget the Dominoes & Card Games...Kickin' the dog, and chasin' the kids! For an Extra Dose of Greasy Delight you might want to add the companion Compact Disc that was released 2 (Two) years later in 1999 entitled "Party Jazz"...Then all you'll need to do is have a Backyard Bar-B-Q Party :)

There is some fairly smokin' B3 on this album, but only on about 20% of it, the remainder being sax and guitar solos. So, if you wanted a more well-rounded instrumental offering, that probably woudn't bother you, but I personally got this album for just the organ, and found myself fastforwarding 2/3 of the way or more through every song till I got to the Hammond players. Having only heard it once, I'm not prepared to comment on individual tracks - I just wanted to comment on the actual amount of said B3.
