I am not gonna front, this is my first EPMD album, but I do have Erick Sermon's first 2 (1993,1995)solos and his Insomnia comp from 1996, and I am a fan of his production. Erick Sermon's production does not dissapoint here either as he handles the lion's share. PMD handles a little as does Rockwilder contributing some co-production. There is a lot of deeper more lyrical East Coast rap out there, but there is room for some fun, beat driven funk, and these guys deliver no shortage of it. Much of the lyrical content includes boasting and flexing rap skills, calling out weak mc's, and a little doe doe smoke here and there. "Never Seen Before" really gives up the funk with a twangy soul sample. I like PMD's flow here, and the 2 show that they are still comin' hard on the mic. The remix is tangy laid-back funk PMD's rolling, funk inflected beat is bangin' on "Last Man Standing." Again, PMD's flow is on point, and the title is pretty self-explanatory. Erick Sermon does a pretty good job on the mic, though I prefer PMD's flow though. I like the Zapp "More Bounce To The Ounce" sample on the tight "You Gots 2 Chill '97," a remake to one of their earliest classics. They tell other mc's to chill because they will be shut down by EPMD's funk if they try to step to them. We get a neat Def Squad collabo with Redman and Keith Murray. Redman serves it as raw as ever; Erick Sermon steps his flow game up a bit here. Keith Murray as usual rips it to shreds with his cool, raspy rap voice. All four come correct as they once again flex their mic skills. The beat has a deep underground vibe. "Intrigued" has a cool funky underground vibe too. Das Efx keep it sewasidal and raw, and Drays and Skoob's flows are intact, a fun listen; Das Efx seems to steal the show here. "Jane 5" has an appropriate background Rick James sample, yet with a raw, old-school boom bap beat. I may not call this album a classic, but I thoroughly enjoyed rockin' this joint. It is a very fun and listenable banger by a duo with a complicated history. Nice to see them Back In Business here. I now need to cop their earlier material to see them at the top of their game.

Erick Sermon & Parrish Smith team back up after taking 5 years off to do another great Group album. Pioneers in Hip Hop, the two got together again and made a great album. It has 2 classic songs, and 3 ok ones, with the others all being quality. Features Def Squad cronies: Redman & Keith Murray as well as Das EFX and Nocturnal. No weak tracks and great production (as always from the Green Eyed Bandit), this album, although short (only 46+ minutes with interludes), it is a great album and a must have.

The landscape of rap had changed dramatically in the 5 years that EPMD was broke up. Due to the major drama in hiphop that went down in the preceding 12 months, E & the P decided to make amends and drop another joint. This joint is just okay. Nothing like the 4 classic joints that dropped between 88 and 92.

i would have to say when this album came out I bought it because of the "Never Seen Before" single. I was immediately impressed from the first track to the end. If you like hip-hop this album is a must have. When this came out I listened to nothing but gangsta rap
and this enlightened me to other genres of rap

Back in Business was a welcome return. It didn't try too hard to blow our minds. It's not over-produced. There are, arguably, no anthems. EPMD's chemistry still holds. Misogyny is kept to a minimum. The Public Enemy cover is bomby!

this is a pretty good listen if you like Paris, or even if you are new to his music. his lyrics are always thought provoking and on point. the reason I only gave it four stars is because it seems like some of the songs are recycled with updated lyrics? in other words, starting to sound repetitive to those of us that have his previous offerings. still love my man Paris, but he kinda needs to update his sound.

I purchased the cd yesterday and was anxious to see if it was as good or better than Sonic Jihad. Sonic Jihad is my favorite album so after 5 years i was hoping to get a new fix of Paris. The message is there, the lyrics are there, however the beats and the passion i thought was lacking from the last cd. IT seems rather rushed and i was hoping to hear more detailed attacks about the corrupt system.

Only songs i like were

Tracks 4,5,8, and 10. The others did not move me as well as those 4 tracks.

Jihad is stil the best album ever created, but as far as acid reflex. I wish he would have tried a little harder on the beats and more detailed material about Obama, Bush, Cheney, Amerikkka.

I gotta disagree with Al G. This record is the ONE. The single "Don't Stop the Movement" speaks perfectly to the times...especially with the election and current social conditions. This record is BEYOND passionate and the beats are actually BETTER than Sonic Jihad, IMO.

A lot of folks like Sonic Jihad because it was so politically conscious. This record appears to be more socially focused. I would give it 6 stars if I could! EXCELLENT WORK.

With everything from ill rhymes to poetic female vocals, sweet hip hop and techno beats to symphonic rapture, this album blurs a lot of lines, and is challenging, interesting, beautiful, and important music. I could see ani difranco fans, Blue Scholars fans, and techno fans digging this disc. The range is incredible for being one album, and i think it breaks trail in some interesting new territory for hip hop music. As a lover of vinyl, i also value quality album art, and this disc has one of my favorite covers, period - which helps remind the listener that music truly is art.

On most CDs you guy nowadays, you usually get 12-14 tracks. One or two are the reason you bought the CD. 2-3 others are "good" but not great...and the rest are pretty much just fluff to fill up the CD to make it seem like you didn't just spend 3 bucks per song worth listening to...

Not quite so with this album. Arguable, all but 1 or 2 songs are good (perhaps not great, but good), but the "great" songs you bought the CD for have company...other great songs. This rhythm, style, and lyrics, are all top-notch...and also have some sort of meaning or reason for being, other than "we wanted to make a song." Then again, I'm all about the message in the songs, and with that said, if you're looking for a CD with dance beats or pop choruses and the like, you'll be lacking in that department.

Overall, a great album. Looking forward to their next...

this cd is a culmination of many other, non-label released cd's best songs. They are all without a doubt, amazing. Alexzandrah, Swamburger, Tanya and DiVinci all come through, as expected with fire-tounged rhymes, futuristic beats, and truly unique content that not only enriches the listener, but enlightens them as well. One song actualy analyzes the relationship between alex and swam in great detail at a fast pace (they're a couple) over top the concept of how personal choices can define or do not define who we are as humans. The range of lyrics is truly depth-defying (new word). The production of DiVinci is complimented well by the deep, layered, ever-changing rythms of on the MPC (he actually plays the MPC, like a keyboard for the beats). But enough of how good this album is. SEE THIS GROUP LIVE! nothing can touch their live shows. period. I've seen the roots, i've seen tribe, i've seen percee p, pharaohe monch, etc. etc. etc. but NOTHING compares to the level of energy, conviction, and true honesty of their live shows. It is something that must be seen to believe. DiVinci alone is worth the price of admission. Please, please, please, if you hear they're coming to your town, GO! i can not stress this enough to you. This group will have you awe-struck. I've seen them 4 times live and each time, i hug each and every one of them after their sets. (they mingle with the crowd after each show) its truly something any hip-hop head needs to see because live hip hop is DYING my friends. it is on its way out, and they're one of the few hopes we have. I hope this has been helpful. please, buy this cd, see them live, and visit the website to buy the un-labeled cd's. they all have solo cd's and they're all amazing. peace.

strong effort indeed

These guys performed with Sage and Slug last year in NC. As soon as Swamburger hit the stage I lept into the air. I had randomly picked up his Roots of Kin album out of a used bin the previous year and had been wondering for a while who the hell this unknown, dope, artist was. I recognized his voice emmediately. I don't listen to this album in the same frame of mind that I do when I want to hear Sage, but it's great in its own right/write. His wife does a lot of the vocals and was a wonderful woman when I talked to her after the show. I was glad to see they had a major release because they seem to not only be good artists, but genuine human beings. Pick up this album and be pleased!

Maino is a up and comming rapper from Brooklyn,NY. I have 3 mixtapes by him includeing this one and I have yet to hear one single song, verse, or rhym at all that I don't like. He is by far one of the best rappers I have ever heard. I'm bold enough to put him in the same company as Biggie, Pac and Jay Z. He is going to put NY back on the map in a major way when it comes to rap music. I recomend this cd to any hardcore rap fan. Give him a chance he may suprise you.

I have heard Maino over the last few years on some other albums and mixtapes, in all I had about 16 songs with him on them, and no doubt he is one of the top rappers that has come out in the last few years, and drops a nice album here. Though it is a solid 4 star album, he definitely has 4.5 or 5 star potential. With 15 songs on here, the Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn native drops 2 classics, 4 ok songs, and the other 9 are good, some being real good. Guests aren't too heavy, only on 4 of the 15 songs. No production credits are given, and for the most part it's a decent job. A nice album to pick up from one of the more talented newer rappers out in the game.

#1 - 8.5
#2 - 8 (taking shots at some of the older heads inhip-hop, which I disagree with)
#3 - 7.5
#4 - 9 (nice beat)
#5 - 9 (f/ Lil Kim & Papoose)
#6 - 8
#7 - 8.5
#8 - 8 (f/ Bang Bang Anywhere gang)
#9 - 8.5 (deeper song)
#11 - 7.5 (f/ Gillie da Kid & Push Montana)
#12 - 10 (CLASSIC -- deeper song with a tight beat)
#13 - 7.5 (f/ Scram Jones)

I just couldnt believe it, here was a good comp of tunes off the rawkus catalouge and every so often you would have words cut out, but my cover says "EXPLICIT LYRICS"?

robbed. Now im listening to tunes with that annoying cut.

apart from that, I just have one other issue with this comp. It looks like a mos def resume of old stuff. Nothing by Eminem off this label (which was fat) or ra the rugged man, or even company flow!! Amazing artists that were just not represented for some other reason or the other.

less mos def, clean versions and this might have been a better.

shame on whoever thought this would be a big sale because rawkus had/has devoted fans.... just another major label failing at trying to come out with a legit catalouge.

While I don't neccesarily agree with the 1 star reviews, I can see where they're coming from. This collection wasn't very well thought out. I also didn't like the way Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Common were used to promote this album when they have plenty of great songs that don't feature any of those guys. But the guy below me completely missed the mark too. Not every song on this album is a radio hit. Maybe it's the region I live in, but I don't recall "Universal Magnetic" or "The Sun God" getting heavy spins on the radio. I think "Definition" was a bigger song than "Respiration" too. I think we all agree that "Simon Says" was a much bigger hit than half the songs on this album. So Greatest Hits doesn't translate into "radio hits". Not many underground labels -- which is what they were right before they closed -- aren't going to have many radio hits. You can count their "radio hits" on less than 10 fingers. The title says "Best Of...", not "Greatest Hits" anyway. These are only a few of the best Rawkus songs though. If you don't have them already, then picking this album up is a no brainer. But what would make a Rawkus enthusiast go out and buy this if they already have this material? I think that's where opening the vault comes into play. So all the points made here are good ones. The album is pretty good, but like I said before, if you already have these songs, I can't think of any reason to buy it. I give it 3 out of 5 for that very reason.

Peace

In the tradition of great hip hop indie labels like Cold Chillin' and Wild Pitch Records, emerged Rwkus Records in the late 90's in reaction of the gangsterism and the cheesy pop rap that infested the genre in the same period. Though the label didn't achieve a large level of sucess, it played by its own rules and let it artists flourish on their own merits. Natrually this comlilation is heavy on Blackstar, Mos Def and Talib Kweli tracks, so newebies get this and go get the label's essentals, namely "Mos Def and Talib Kweli as Blackstar", Mos Def's "Black On Both Sides", Reflection Eternal's "Train Of Thought", Talib Kweli's "Quality" and the Soundbombing compilations.

Ok, first off Rawkus Records was one one of the top independent hip hop record labels of the late 90's. It got some mc's careers started like conscious rappers, Mos Def and Talib Kweli. The label also offered a lot of underground hip hop that went against the mainstream. This album is basically a showcase of the artists who made what Rawkus is today. But there are some songs missing that this greatest hits could have benefited from. Company Flow's 8 Steps to Perfection or perhaps The Fire in which you burn, Umi Says, Simon Says, I Try, Kool G Rap's My Life, Any Man, etc. But nonetheless, this is a good summary of what Rawkus did in 10 years and hopefully they will put some more underground hip hop after being shut down for awhile

Ok... The reviewers who give this one star for "not having anything new" on it are friggin retarded. No offense REALLY intended, but this IS a GREATEST HITS album, not a poorly thought out "b-sides and rarities" album. The point of the album is NOT to show you rare and unknown Rawkus tracks, it's to show you the "greatest hits". I would agree that Simon Says is painfully missing, but then again, there's like... 5 tracks on that same Pharoahe CD that should be on here, so I think it's just a matter of Rawkus having WAY more material available than JUST one greatest hits album. Christ, I'd just be happy if they'd re-press Internal Affairs and maybe even just press it together with something like Reflection Eternal or Black Star and you've got the epitome of what Rawkus stood for...

On a side note, I later learned that Simon Says (and it's remix) are the exact reason that Internal Affairs will likely never be re-pressed, and I'm sure the problems related will NEVER be resolved (the Godzilla sample was never properly cleared and it's my understanding that an injunction was filed to make sure the album is no longer available... In addition to that, Rawkus has historically had huge issues with not having enough money to actually do the projects they had on the table, which makes it VERY unlikely that they'll ever be able to afford that Godzilla Sample...)

You know, some of the greatest musicians of all time were on herion at their peak...(Ray charles, Billie holiday, etc.)I dont know if it was a coincedence that B.G. was on herion and making straight classics.
This gets a 4.5 because some of the beats aren't bangers. Most are though...

This is one of the best Cash Money albums released and defenitely BG's best album. Remember that he was only 16 years old when he recorded this album and then listen to the lyrics. WOW!!!! This man had to grow up fast where he came from! This entire album is solid. Mannie Fresh lays down some very good beats for BG to flow over. Not many people like BG if they arent Cash Money fans. But I advise everyone who is a rap fan to pick up this album because its a classic from tha south that shouldnt be slept on.

I know that Cash Money's time is over, but pick this album up, its a lot different from the stuff that was coming out while they were hot.

Ex-member of the Cash Money and Hot Boys originator B.G. gives us an almost perfect It's All On U, Vol. 1 at the tender age 16. For his age he's well beyond his years with complete graphic gangster tales of selling dope, snorting and balling outta control. This release was before the Universal deal and the bling, bling talk was already in him with tracks like "Get Your Shine On!!" He gives us tales of Uptown's 13th Ward, New Orleans through the eyes of a Baby Gangster on "'N' My City", "Round My Way" and "Uptown Thang (Remix Hot)". This album was produced entirely by Mannie Fresh with his bouncing tracks. With "I Be Thinking" he brings it a little close to home with his known problem with herion. "Silent B.G." is one of the brightest gems on here with convincing lyrics like "...I'mma, 9-1-1 hit a nigga / uh,uh! thugged out, wig splitta nigga / tryin'a, sparkle in this world like glitter nigga..." The young Lil Wayne helped out with the hook on "Let's Get Funky". Just read the titles and you could tell what the album is about, but this one of B.G.'s best release no matter what age.

Album is pretty good. But it's really random on how everything was put together. Never knew the cd existed till I saw it at Best Buy. I took a risk and bought it. Not bad

Obviously, some of this is material that (if you're a die hard bone fan) you've probably heard before. And yes, looking through the linear notes, you might start to think this is a little shady in terms of legality (the song "Ride Wit Me" by "Layzie Bone featuring Eazy-E actually only samples N.W.A.'s Boyz N Da Hood, and it's accredited as a sample of "Cruisin In My '64" on Comptown Records. LOL) BUT this compilation had a lot to offer me in terms of music I HADN'T heard before. For example, the aforementioned "Ride Wit Me" is a seemingly basic southern-influenced chopped n screwed track, BUT with Layzie's adept flow and catchy beat, it's a surefire classic. Also, his collaborations with Thin C (mostly rock influenced, which surprised me) are all above par. In fact, the only real problems I have with this double disc delight are the short tracks (like Nas/Nashawn's Choir Song, and Krayzie Bone's Momma Used Ta Say) and the fact that some songs don't even feature Bone Thugs artists! But still, it's mostly good material, and a good couple of cds to bump in the whip until Bone Thugs release a new album. Props!

This album is often compared to "Rza's Greatest Hits" but this one has more classic tracks. If you are a true wu head then you might want to pick this up. I won't elaborate on the album too much because its material comes from other pervious Wu albums.

Well, all the songs are onpoint thats why i gave 5 starts but i have and own every single song here... My favorites ? Genious "cold world" and mobb deep's "right back at you" the best two tracks there but the rest is tight as well! Worth your money ? yes, if you haven't heard early wu and want to get schooled buy it but if your hooked on that ludacris trash along with ja rule, nelly, gay z,fabulos,bowow...Then, don't even bother ! This is strictly for long time fans or who ever feel true hip hop... Don't foget where it came from, son !!!

BASICALLY, IF YOU A WU TANG FAN, YOU SHOULD HAVE THIS ALBUM. SOME PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS ALBUM BECAUSE IT HAS LOTS OF ALREADY RELEASED MATERIAL. BUT IF YOU CAN READ, YOU'D KNOW THAT THE WORD CHRONICLES MEANS A HISTORICAL RECORD OF EVENTS, AND THAT'S JUST WHAT THIS ALBUM IS. IS A LOOK BACK AT WU TANG JOINTS AND WU TANG COLABOS BETWEEN THE YEAR 93-96. JOINTS LIKE "HIP HOP DRUNKIES" BY THE LIKS(COP THEIR NEW ALBUM) FEATURING OL' DIRTY BASTARD AND "RZA'S MIX OF "COLD WORLD" BY THE GZA FEATURING D' ANGELO, ARE TRACKS NO WU FAN SHOULD BE WITHOUT. SHYHEIM'S "YOUNG GODZ" IS A HOT TRACK THAT SOME MIGHT NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH. SO FOR THESE 3 SONGS ALONE, THE ALBUM IS WORTH GETTING. (COP SHYHEIM'S AKA THE RUGGED CHILD, THE LOST GENERATION AND MANCHILD IF YOU DON'T HAVE THEM ALREADY.) ALL THE SONGS ARE TIGHT. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPPOINTED.

Msck 10's first album was a classic. Mack 10 is still on point on this release and he still showed no signs of slippin lyrically on this album. Chicken Hawk II is a good start off song. It's Mack 10 doing what he does best. Mack 10, Mack 10 feat AllFrumTha i and The Comrads samples UTFO's Roxanne, Roxxane and is one of the better cuts on the album. E-40 joins Mack 10 on Cant Stop. Ice Cube shows up on The Guppies as well as Only In California which also features Snoop Dogg. Dopeman is Mack 10 rendition of the NWA classic of the same title. The title track is the best song on here because it's Mack 10 doing an introspective track. The only song I cant get into is Backyard Boogie. Bottom Line: Based On A True Story is Mack 10's best work to date. Mack 10 still delivers over those funky west coast beats and the guest appearances were a nice touch. It's sad that he hasnt been the same after this album. Standout Tracks: MACK 10 MACK 10, CANT STOP, TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT, THE GUPPIES, INGLEWOOD SWANGIN, DOPEMAN and BASED ON A TRUE STORY.

Mack 10 drops his second album in late 1997, and it is an underrated classic with great G-Funk production and sick spits by Mack 10. Beat credits go to Ant Banks on 1/4th of the whole album (his beats simply bang here as usual!), Binky (of Allfrumthai), Tray, Soopafly, Ice Cube, Bob Cat, all do a song or two. I like the beats here better than on his self-titled debut, and those beats ranged from o.k. to a few classics. Mack 10 gets his brag on in the adrenaline paced "Mack 10, Mack 10." E-40 and Mack get they hustle on in the deep-groove Ant Banks laced banger "Can't Stop." They flow well, and even though they have different styles, they complement each other and have dope chemistry. "Only In California" f/ Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube is a simply bangin' lowrider classic with slick spits (especially Snoop's verse). Cruise to this on the palm lined avenues on 3-wheel motion. "W/S Foe Life" is a brief, more menacing banger with a loud whiny synth in the hook. "Backyard Boogie" is a certified classic with a sweet funky beat and imagery of chillin at the BBQ with hunnies and homies. I love the loopy, whiny synth that gives it a slight space boogie feel in the hook. Mack 10 and gets his mash on in "Tonight's The Night" with a unique and slumpin Ant Banks banger beat. Banks reworks the beat on the phat remake of NWA's "Dopeman," and Mack 10 does a good job interpolating it, and adds in a few of his own lyrics here and there. The beat on "The Guppies" is slightly awkward, but very original; it is fast and pulsating, and Ice Cube comes by to represent. I love "What You Need (Dopeman '97)." He pushes dope and shows his wide variety of "retail" on the laidback, sunny G-Funk banger, perhaps his own original version of "Dopeman." All in all, this album is full of bangers throughout, and the production is awesome and really gives him a good backdrop to spit. If you liked his debut, you may like this one better.

I like this CD by Mack 10. I cant say its his best, thats why I gave it a 4, but I still find myself bumbing this cd in my truck quite often. Backyard boogie has a tight beat, and the chicken hawk 2 is also a great hit. If you like Mack then grab this cd. Mack still keepin it GaNgStA!

After hos solid self-titled debut album and the huge success of Westside Connection's "Bow Down" , it was the perfect timing for Mack 10 to release his second album. "Based on a True Story" continues what Bow Down had started - GREAT beats with nothing but West Coast gangsta rap on it. Although Mack 10 lacks Ice Cube and WC's carisma or lyrical abilities, he's still a talented rapper, with a unique voice and high street cred. "Based on a true story" is much beter than his debut, with much much better production and rapping. On this album, Mack 10 sounds the best he's ever sounded - nowdays his rapping is a bit to laid back, lacking emotion - but on this one, Mack One O raps with energy, sounding real hard on quite a few. Lyrically it's all about the streets on this one, drug dealing, killing, hustlin'. No sex songs, no cars songs, just gangsta sh** to the fullest. The production is very impressive. Ant Banks did 4 songs (some of the best are his), Young Tre, Soopafly, Bob Cat, Mack 10 and Ice Cube did the rest. It's West Coast rap at it's highest form and I feel it's a great follow-up to "Bow Down". Guest rappers are AllFrumThaI, Comrads, Ice Cube (on 2 songs and all over the album as well), Snoop Dogg (you can hardly hear his voice on that song, he almost whispers his verse)...I only wish WC was on it too, but it's all good... There's no attempt to go mainstream on this album: It was recorded when West Coast rap was at it's peak, in terms of quality and popularity, so rappers could go on and do their thing without fearing the album won't sell. You won't skip a track on this one, I give you my word, Mack 10's second album is his best solo release ever. Nothing he did after that can match "Based on a true story".
