This is serious stuff--- I am a Reiki Master Teacher and Love Deuter! However this recording is really for background in meditation! OR maybe in a funky shop that sells meditative stuff OR in a garden for contemplation. I wouldn't have purchased this one if I had been able to listen to more of it in advance. This is just MY preference having nothing to do with the quality of the recording. I am sure I will use it all in good time.

I am familiar with Deuter from his Reiki CD's and when this work showed up in my mailbox I noticed New Earth records did not provide the usual press release I am used to receiving which covers the background of the work and the artist. But seeing his name, I knew this would be a good piece to review and I was not disappointed.

This is the second CD by Deuter of the meditative music of Tibetan bowls. I did not have the pleasure of hearing the first work, but this one is a collection of some wondrous harmonies and deep meditative sounds that only singing bowls can bring.

True Tibetan bowls are made of a mixture of seven metals, one each for the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. They are made by pouring the metal onto a flat stone and then hand shaping the bowl with a hammer. The bowl is played by rubbing the rim with a mallet, and they can produce a complex range of sound that is deep and harmonic with many overtones. The bowls are usually made by Tibetan monks for their offerings, and for their meditations on the sound. The bowls used on this CD come from a collection of bowls owned by Chandra.

Deuter composed and performs the pieces on this CD, and the focus is on short meditations. The music tracks run from seven to seventeen minutes, and can be taken individually or as the complete CD. The CD is well recorded and you don't miss any of the tones or values that can come from a poor recording.

This kind of musical work can get monotonous if not done properly. Deuter has enough different value bowls and the mastery of the medium to present us with various harmonics, complimentary tones, and complex compositions to provide enough interest so the music is melodious without melody and does not drone in the background. It can be used as a focus for meditations, or can fill the background with sounds to add a relaxing feel to the work or living environment.

This is a pleasant and surprising work on singing bowls. You do not expect the kind of light and relaxing feeling these sounds can bring. While working with the CD in the background, I did not overly notice the music, but when I would stop for a moment, the sounds were calming, appealing and worked gently on the mind. When I used the music for meditation, it provided a focus without being obnoxious, as sometimes these kinds of works can get from over playing the same tones to the point of distraction. If you like the subtle harmonic tones of singing bowls and want some excellent compositions for meditation or calming sounds for your home or your workspace, this CD can provide exactly what you are looking for. maf

This CD is very tranquil and perfect for meditation or massage.
Tibetan bells are used in long, slow, gentle tones. It is as random as wind chimes in a gentle breeze.I even play it to fall asleep with.

Disappointing and more than a little grating

I have been searching for more Tibetan music since Seven Metals and have been consistently led astray by choice snippets on other albums. Unfortunately, this album has an overly electronic sound to it and several edgy, irritating cuts. The first song is the best of the album! The rest are anything but "meditative".

If you are looking for relaxing music, skip the electronics and listen to real temple bowls. Seven Metals Singing Bowls of Tibet

You can hardly listen to any of Waylon's hits without realizing what a great singer he was. But nowhere is the breadth of Waylon's talent more evident than on this expanded (2 disc) live album. Waylon is tough and sensitive, simple and insightful, angry and humble, melancholy and funny. You may, or may not, realize that Waylon was a great guitarist based on his studio recordings. But Waylon's guitar playing on Live is distinctively terrific. Ralph Mooney (pedal steel) and the rest of the band complement Waylon perfectly. Full of hits, near hits, and obscure gems (42 songs worth) from start to finish. Great singing, great playing, and a whole lot of fun. One of the great live albums of any genre. Country music don't get any better than this.

This 2cd set contains the best versions of "This time" and "Just to satisfy you" ever recorded (studio versions included). This is Waylon at the top of his game and is my all time favorite live country cd. Everything else on it is also fabulous. I have both the early single cd release and the extended two cd version. I give this (the extended version) as a gift frequently to people. If you're a fan of outlaw country and you don't like this then you're not American friend. Buy it.

One day after Waylon signed his landmark contract with RCA in 1974 granting him complete creative control he was booked to play CBGB's in New York city. At that time punk was king and the clientele of that particular establishment was predictably the saftey-pin-in-the-cheek crowd. When Waylon and Company stepped on the stage and looked out at the assembled mass he said "I don't know what kind of show y'all are used to, but this is a country music show."

Someone yelled from the back ofthe room "Who the &*^% are YOU??!"

Waylon replied "I'm Waylon G(& D^%$# Jennings, now shut up!"

He went on to do three encores.

On this disc he makes that statement again and again through the swagger, bravado and energy he expends on every song. There's no point in belaboring the obvious. It has been previously well documented that this is a quite hefty 42 track, two disc set chock full of Waylon goodness from beginning to end. The only thing I can add to what's been written is that this is more than Waylon's music. In the nearly two hours this disc takes up we get a glimpse the man's LIFE and his dedication to what he'd started going all the way back to his days with Buddy Holly. This is truly an amazing album. Buy it and request rush delivery.

I bought Waylon Live in 2001, the one that had the 20 songs in it and 2 years later I found out about this one....this one kicks butt!! If you like real country, not the one they are playing today this concert is a must. Its more than 30 yrs old and if you play it against the new country singers its better by far.

This is the Cherryholmes: A beautiful, talented family band. Jere, the father, meticulouly thumps his bass while wife Sandy sings and dances enthusiastically while playing a great mandolin. Daughter Cia plays the guitar or banjo. Son Skip also plays the guitar, while other son BJ and younger daughter Molly play mirror image fiddles (one left-hand and one right-hand). Meanwhile, all sing in sweet harmony. The one drawback of this CD is that you don't get the joy of watching them perform.

Part of their perfection is just a touch of imperfect roughness. This band does not sound as if they were produced and polished by some industrial bluegrass institution; they are a human family, just like the rest of us, one loaded with inspiration and talent.

I own all of their CD's, and in my opinion, this is their best CD to date.

If you ever get the chance to see Cheryyholmes in person, you will not be disappointed. This another great family of talented musicians, singers and dancers. Cherryholmes has graced the stages from bluegrass festivals to the Grand Ole Opry. Cia, Molly, B.J. and Skip are the four kids joining dad Jere, and mom Sandy. This is bluegrass at it's finest.

I am more of a acoustic fan and not really a Bluegrass junkie, but I have now seen this group 3 times and am now getting more into bluegrass. This group(famiy) is absolutly great!!! They put on a great show and the kids have continued to improve. Cia (23/24) plays a great banjo and has that great high soaring voice that a truly great bluegrass band needs. BJ the oldest son (19) has simply imroved tremendously over the last 2 years and is now in my opinion the best fidder in bluegrass. His sister Molly Kate (14) plays the fiddle left handed and with a more mellow sound but togother with BJ are an unbelevable twin fiddle combo. Ship (17) plays a really great hard driving guitar.

They play over 300 dates a year and run do not walk to the next show. Their live show is fast-paced oldtime 2 micrphone performance and simply the best show in all of bluegrass.

They are generous with their time and great with their fans, they make you feel like one of the family.

This fantastic album uses bluegrass instruments on a variety of tunes but isn't necessarily all a bluegrass album. Anyhow, I've listened to it about 99 times and I still love it. The arrangements, the voicings, the transitions, Jimmie Rodgers -- lots to love! Oh, and don't forget the chops!

I hope he got that out of his system.

As a gifted musician, Chris Thile is one of those rare, incredible players that come along once or twice in a lifetime.

While I understand the need to move along, to grow as a musician, I found this CD to be a disappointment in general, with just a few bright moments.

As someone who owns almost all of Chris's discography, I was looking forward to hearing what he was up to these days. Cut after cut, I waited to hear the inspired, incredibly deep talent I've come to know and love... from as far back as his very first CD. But, he never really appeared.

If you're thinking about buying this as your first exposure to Chris... do yourself a favor and don't. Instead, pick up "Not All Who Wander Are Lost", or "Stealing Second". Both are infinitely better than this, a lackluster effort at best.

Wow. Chris, Gabe, Critter, Pickles, and Greg (now Paul) rock my socks! This album is amazing from start to finish. It stays on repeat in my car. You can't help but sing along, dance, tap your foot, hum, or maybe even throw in an occasional head bang or two. Believe me, I've gotten some strange looks from people sitting next to me at red lights. :D

If you don't have this cd yet, you need to get it.

Who is a musical expert? I don't have a degree. I've just been listening to music for some 35 years now. Folk, rock, bluegrass, jazz...it doesn't take talent to listen. But I think I can hear talent, creativity, and originality by now. If I'm right about that, you folks using the word "mediocre" better look it up. "Of moderate or low quality" is really your impression of this album? Forget the material, this album is played at a level equivalent to professional symphony orchestras and Broadway pit musicians. If you've seen them, these guys stand around on stage talking about how many beats per minute they should play the next tune at.

But let's look at material here. It's not just that the influences are diverse. What is brilliant is that diverse material is brought together by a unifying approach to composition and performance that expresses a unique vision. In the process, true relationships between the genres are exposed for the listener to dig. If you are too worried about the f-bombs to hear that, or too worried about where this stands compared with other music you like, then maybe this is where you and the artist part company. For me, there is no invalid criteria for judging whether or not you like a piece of music. But give Chris Thile credit for this: the man does not pander. He's going someplace and he's not worried about whether the people who liked the last album, or his pervious bands, come with.

Stop whining about the "f-bomb"

It is very obvious to me after reading all of the reviews that no one is aware that The Strokes wrote "Heart in a Cage". If Thile is going to cover their song, its not a crime to use the lyrics that were written by the original artist. People are entitled to their own prefrences, but it is asinine to proclaim that he wanted to "appear tough" or to be "taken more seriously" and that people should not buy this album because of it. Grow up huh?

I love Heavy metal and i am from Brazil and i remenber When Roots came to the world. The metalheads in Brazil were really proud of Sepultura... Can you belive that? From Brazil, man?Yes, and they are really heavy and really great, and Roots was the pinaccle of it all. After that, Max split the band and things change a lot. Arise and Chaos are my favorites, but Roots consolidate Sepultura as a monster rock of heavy music. At 1996 these guys from Brazil were on the top of metal with Pantera and Biohazard, do you remenber? Whatever, í love Sepultura with Max and if you like insane music with heavy guitars, drums and attitude, Roots is perfect for you.

I popped this in after having spent almost 10 years away from it... and I have to say that this album inspires.

It is not as technical as any of their previous works, but does leap off where Chaos AD left off.

The goal here... was a return to simplicity. We all know they can write technically inspired and classical riffs... they knew that too. The goal is no more apparent than when you look at the cover and title of the album. The fact remains that an album of this type has not been repeated by any other band since.

The riffing is very simplistic at times, but to beat the dead horse: that was the point. I challenge metal listeners to find another song that sounds like Itsari... the native singing and dancing combined with some well-crafted Spanish acoustic. Only the Swedish metal bands were doing anything remotely similar, specifically Dark Tranquillity and In Flames.

Another reviewer commented that the historical relevance of the album is what contributes to its greatness; I agree, but take the other view.

In 1996 we also had Tool's "Aenima" and Manson's "Antichrist Superstar." This is the only other album that year that stands in line as a memorable performance with those three, and to contrast the Scandinavian release that year was In Flame's "The Jester Race," and all four are albums I can come back to 12 years later and say, "that was f#$%^ good."

Is this Sepultura or Soulfly

Ok, first of all...is this soulfly or Sepultura. All the tracks on this album sound like a heavy Soulfly. Sepultura has now totally lost their edge with the off-time thrash/death metal that their REAL roots were, what made one of the top metal acts of the 80s and 90s. This album all the makings of a nu-metal(Soulfly) album. Very basic riffs, very stupid lyrics, and very basic jams in the songs. The complexity of Igor's drumming, Andreas' guitar and riffing and Max's growling has all left for nu-metal styles. Igor's playing sounds as simple as Lars Ulrich, Andreas' playing is no longer complex, he sounds we came out of Soulfly with the basic riffs. Max yells at the top of his lungs and no longer has the growl he is known for. The album even has DJ scratching and Jonathan Davis from Korn on the track "Lookaway". You can't any more nu-metal than having Jonathan Davis cameo on a track.

THis album is major disappointment for any one who knows the REAL Sepultura, the pre-"Chaos AD" Sepultura.

I believe this was one of the best metal album of the 90's. Sepultura are much more influential the they are given credit. Finally there was a band that used the heavy death metal sound with lyrics with actual meaning rather than just relying on shock value. I'm not saying the lyrics were splitting the atom but they were much more mature than what death/black metal had been doing for the last 10 years. The funny thing is when I first heard Roots I did not realize they were the same band that I had read about in the mid 80's who were said to have a sound similar to the great Celtic Frost. If you love heavy music and have not listened to Sepultura than buy this cd.

ATB has been producing many good albums for many years, but this album signals how much he has changed his style. The first disk has some kind of rock beat to it, which some people don't mind. The 2nd disk is really slow music in which I really love to listen to nowadays. "A dream about you" is a really good song from this disk ,and some songs are perfect to listen to with your special someone in your life right now. Overall, this is a good album with disk 1 being the rock type songs, and disk 2 being the relaxing, calming songs.

For all those fans of ATB this is a must have. It has a great balance of songs on the first cd and on the second one is a great selection of instrumental trance that really reaches your senses. You like ATB, you will love this Album.

The Rock sound of CD1 is not welcome, but CD2 is nice.

I've been a big fan since 1999 with Movin' Melodies which is still one of my favorite albums. I have all of ATB's studio albums and he remains one of my favorite artists that I listen to almost every day. However, I don't like his "The DJ in the Mix" series.

Sticking to ATB studio creations, I bought Trilogy to get more of the same great trance. In CD1, I only enjoy listening to Justify repeatedly, while others are just OK. The distinct rock sound blended with the some trance feels like bland pop-rock.

CD2 has really grown on me. My media player seems to love it, so I've been listening to it often while doing homework and was really surprised when I checked and found what album the songs were from. I enjoy CD2 more than CD1.

In the middle of all 95 tracks, Trilogy CD1 tracks stick out like a sore thumb. When the distinct rock sounds come on, it feels like I've already heard the style from a real rock artist.

I give 3 stars to CD1 and 4 stars to CD2.

This is the third time I have puchased this particular CD and HIGHLY recommend it. It takes the classic jazz stylings of the most popular artists in their day and blends it with todays house/dance music. The combination is soulful and catchy. You won't be disappointed!

I have all three of the "Verve Remixed" CDs. This one is the worst. On this CD, I just cannot see the point of mangling these old recordings. I found no compelling rhythms at all.

By contrast, the #2 and #3 CDs in the series are great. I find this puzzling. Usually, sequels suck. In this case, the musicheads at Verve seem to have improved their game with practice. I respect them for that. Now I'll just start up Remixed #3 and bliss out for a while.

Not many CD's make you heart skip a beat the moment you listen to them. This is definitely one of those rare finds. And this is why:

1) The quality of the original (unmixed) tracks is superb. Great songs to begin with.
2) The remixes do great justice to the original songs and performers. There's a great deal of respect to these legendary performers and their voices in the remixes.
3) The quality of these remixes is outstanding.

The result is unbelievable. You'll get an incredibly well-produced compilation of jazz hits from SUPER-performers such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday remixed by MEGA-DJ's/producers like Rae & Christian, dZihan & Kamien, De-Phazz, Thievery Corporation, King Britt, UFO, Funky Lowlives, etc...

BUT BEWARE, the sound is not jazz (maybe nu-jazz or electro-jazz, but not jazz). It is definitely sexy, groovy, funky, retro-cool, classy electronic music with touches of jazz. Perfect for any situation. Pre-party warm-up at home, martini-drinking at a nice lounge, people-watching at THE white party in South Beach, or maybe simply at home working on your laptop.

This CD is sooo good, it's gonna make you feel hip, cool, and sexy...But all that BS aside, the track selection, remixes, and overall production quality make of this album a TRUE GEM. Go get it.

I had this on vinyl many years ago and it was a favorite. When I received the CD, I remembered why. It is excellent. Sandy Dennis has such a pure, strong voice. Thank you for an excellent product. Takes me to a place far away.

Well, since I couldn't locate a copy of the one-disc remaster with bonus tracks, I finally went and sprung for this, even though I had nearly everything. Not sure what the "middle" release offered, but in terms of a booklet this one beats the standard (no-bonus-track/original packaging) release hands down....a nice essay and a bunch of great photos from the house-in-the-country rehearsals where they developed these tunes.

Just to confirm, the final track on disc 2 (Lady Is a Tramp/Fly Me to the Moon) is just a goof-off instrumental from the rehearsals, which demonstrates the humorous side of this heavy band & album but otherwise for completists only. While some thought has been put into the running order of the bonus disc and its flow, I agree with a previous reviewer that more could have been included: namely, more rehearsals. The unConventional box hints at tantalizing alternate-arrangement attempts at Tam Lin, and even includes an early (admittedly lower quality) version of Farewell Farewell, and one of Crazy Man Michael, too (unless it's an alternate mix). At the very least, the alternate mix of Come All Ye from that box should've been included here; there's no Swarb fiddle on it, but consequently there's alot more of Thompson's guitar so it's a more rocking mix. Both versions are equally perfect, but one hasn't been widely heard.

As for what is here, it's hard to complain if you HAVEN'T been collecting whatever was previously out there: the BBC session in full (also available on the BBC box), and the official studio outtakes from the album. Of these, Sir Patrick Spens is the one true lost gem that belongs on the album; I'd have had no problem with it being added to disc 1, as I think it would've had there been room on the original LP. I'd never had either of the Quiet Joys of Brotherhood takes; they're haunting and great. But Reynardine already fills the meditative, Sailor's Life slot on Liege and Lief, so I can see why they left off Quiet Joys. Nice to have them, though; not sure who's playing the droning instrument on this song, or what instrument it is, even; I assume it's Thompson, but then again there's no fiddle so maybe it's Swarb.

Anyway, a five-star classic album, a great bonus disc, and a great booklet. So I certainly can't give this deluxe package less than five stars, but diehards will still wish there were additional rarities. So many have been unearthed in recent years (including the stuff here) that fans have gotten spoiled. Just to confirm, if you haven't heard this BBC stuff, make no mistake, it's pure gold. (And demonstrates that Sir Patrick Spens was indeed a legitimate part of this material.)

come on now, it's a cd....

there is about 70 minutes of space unused on this 2 cd set. if your going to make a 2 cd set, how about filling it up to justify the high price. make no mistake, this is great music but go with the regular single cd edition. this is a rip-off.

...but if you do this is a bit of a rip-off. This is a rip-off because it's so good! This is the way the previous edition should have been.

I fully approve of keeping bonus material separate from the original album in all but a few very exceptional cases(see "Unhalfbricking" for example)because, I find that, out takes, demo's, live and 'alternate' versions are so often a distraction or a dilution of the original album's quality. Yes I know, you can program them off, or even just be ready to press stop at the point the original would have ended, but I prefer it if such concerns are absent from the listening experience. In this case I think that there is such an odd blend of extras that keeping them separate is a very sensible idea.

However at the price it seems to me that it is not really for the casual fan looking to `see what all the fuss is about' and the `very keen fans' will have, all but a couple, of the extra tracks already. Most importantly the record company could/should have released it at the same time as the 'single disc re-master' as this would have avoided the accusation that owners of that version are being cynically manipulated into making an additional purchase that they shouldn't have to.

This is an excellent presentation of a truly great album and if you don't already own a copy and/or don't mind paying the extra money then this is definitely the best available edition.

If you need a reason to sing along in the shower, sing while you drive to Vegas or sing while you work out on the treadmill, this CD is it! The lyrics to "Look What Followed Me Home", "Honky Tonk Healin", "Down at the Bottom of a Broken Heart", and of course, "Thinkin Problem," are fun to mimic and the beat easily gives a skip to your step. This guy was the best kept secret in the 90's and the music will never get old.

Years ago my husband made a wonderful tape for me, about us and our love for one another. He died in 2001 and I moved to Ireland. Several months ago I found this old tape and tracked some of the recordings on it...to discover David Ball's Thinkin' Problem. It's a magnificent ride for anyone, anytime but for me it's a gift from a love that will remain with me forever.

Absolutely fantastic

This is one of the greatest honkytonk CDs I've ever heard. When I first heard "Thinkin' Problem" on the radio in 1994, I instantly knew I had to have this CD. There's not a bad song in the bunch, from the rocking honkytonk songs to the ballads, especially the heartbreaking "12-12-84." I can't praise this CD enough; it's real, hard-core, twangy country.
