This is the second CD by Deuter of the meditative music of Tibetan bowls. I did not have the pleasure of hearing the first work, but this one is a collection of some wondrous harmonies and deep meditative sounds that only singing bowls can bring.
True Tibetan bowls are made of a mixture of seven metals, one each for the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. They are made by pouring the metal onto a flat stone and then hand shaping the bowl with a hammer. The bowl is played by rubbing the rim with a mallet, and they can produce a complex range of sound that is deep and harmonic with many overtones. The bowls are usually made by Tibetan monks for their offerings, and for their meditations on the sound. The bowls used on this CD come from a collection of bowls owned by Chandra.
Deuter composed and performs the pieces on this CD, and the focus is on short meditations. The music tracks run from seven to seventeen minutes, and can be taken individually or as the complete CD. The CD is well recorded and you don't miss any of the tones or values that can come from a poor recording.
This kind of musical work can get monotonous if not done properly. Deuter has enough different value bowls and the mastery of the medium to present us with various harmonics, complimentary tones, and complex compositions to provide enough interest so the music is melodious without melody and does not drone in the background. It can be used as a focus for meditations, or can fill the background with sounds to add a relaxing feel to the work or living environment.
This is a pleasant and surprising work on singing bowls. You do not expect the kind of light and relaxing feeling these sounds can bring. While working with the CD in the background, I did not overly notice the music, but when I would stop for a moment, the sounds were calming, appealing and worked gently on the mind. When I used the music for meditation, it provided a focus without being obnoxious, as sometimes these kinds of works can get from over playing the same tones to the point of distraction. If you like the subtle harmonic tones of singing bowls and want some excellent compositions for meditation or calming sounds for your home or your workspace, this CD can provide exactly what you are looking for. maf

Someone yelled from the back ofthe room "Who the &*^% are YOU??!"
Waylon replied "I'm Waylon G(& D^%$# Jennings, now shut up!"
He went on to do three encores.
On this disc he makes that statement again and again through the swagger, bravado and energy he expends on every song. There's no point in belaboring the obvious. It has been previously well documented that this is a quite hefty 42 track, two disc set chock full of Waylon goodness from beginning to end. The only thing I can add to what's been written is that this is more than Waylon's music. In the nearly two hours this disc takes up we get a glimpse the man's LIFE and his dedication to what he'd started going all the way back to his days with Buddy Holly. This is truly an amazing album. Buy it and request rush delivery.

Part of their perfection is just a touch of imperfect roughness. This band does not sound as if they were produced and polished by some industrial bluegrass institution; they are a human family, just like the rest of us, one loaded with inspiration and talent.
I own all of their CD's, and in my opinion, this is their best CD to date.

They play over 300 dates a year and run do not walk to the next show. Their live show is fast-paced oldtime 2 micrphone performance and simply the best show in all of bluegrass.
They are generous with their time and great with their fans, they make you feel like one of the family.

While I understand the need to move along, to grow as a musician, I found this CD to be a disappointment in general, with just a few bright moments.
As someone who owns almost all of Chris's discography, I was looking forward to hearing what he was up to these days. Cut after cut, I waited to hear the inspired, incredibly deep talent I've come to know and love... from as far back as his very first CD. But, he never really appeared.
If you're thinking about buying this as your first exposure to Chris... do yourself a favor and don't. Instead, pick up "Not All Who Wander Are Lost", or "Stealing Second". Both are infinitely better than this, a lackluster effort at best.

But let's look at material here. It's not just that the influences are diverse. What is brilliant is that diverse material is brought together by a unifying approach to composition and performance that expresses a unique vision. In the process, true relationships between the genres are exposed for the listener to dig. If you are too worried about the f-bombs to hear that, or too worried about where this stands compared with other music you like, then maybe this is where you and the artist part company. For me, there is no invalid criteria for judging whether or not you like a piece of music. But give Chris Thile credit for this: the man does not pander. He's going someplace and he's not worried about whether the people who liked the last album, or his pervious bands, come with.

Still Stands in top 5 of 1996Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-09-25
It is not as technical as any of their previous works, but does leap off where Chaos AD left off.
The goal here... was a return to simplicity. We all know they can write technically inspired and classical riffs... they knew that too. The goal is no more apparent than when you look at the cover and title of the album. The fact remains that an album of this type has not been repeated by any other band since.
The riffing is very simplistic at times, but to beat the dead horse: that was the point. I challenge metal listeners to find another song that sounds like Itsari... the native singing and dancing combined with some well-crafted Spanish acoustic. Only the Swedish metal bands were doing anything remotely similar, specifically Dark Tranquillity and In Flames.
Another reviewer commented that the historical relevance of the album is what contributes to its greatness; I agree, but take the other view.
In 1996 we also had Tool's "Aenima" and Manson's "Antichrist Superstar." This is the only other album that year that stands in line as a memorable performance with those three, and to contrast the Scandinavian release that year was In Flame's "The Jester Race," and all four are albums I can come back to 12 years later and say, "that was f#$%^ good."

Sticking to ATB studio creations, I bought Trilogy to get more of the same great trance. In CD1, I only enjoy listening to Justify repeatedly, while others are just OK. The distinct rock sound blended with the some trance feels like bland pop-rock.
CD2 has really grown on me. My media player seems to love it, so I've been listening to it often while doing homework and was really surprised when I checked and found what album the songs were from. I enjoy CD2 more than CD1.
In the middle of all 95 tracks, Trilogy CD1 tracks stick out like a sore thumb. When the distinct rock sounds come on, it feels like I've already heard the style from a real rock artist.
I give 3 stars to CD1 and 4 stars to CD2.

By contrast, the #2 and #3 CDs in the series are great. I find this puzzling. Usually, sequels suck. In this case, the musicheads at Verve seem to have improved their game with practice. I respect them for that. Now I'll just start up Remixed #3 and bliss out for a while.
Brilliantly Groovy and Funky !Reviewer ID:

1) The quality of the original (unmixed) tracks is superb. Great songs to begin with.
2) The remixes do great justice to the original songs and performers. There's a great deal of respect to these legendary performers and their voices in the remixes.
3) The quality of these remixes is outstanding.
The result is unbelievable. You'll get an incredibly well-produced compilation of jazz hits from SUPER-performers such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday remixed by MEGA-DJ's/producers like Rae & Christian, dZihan & Kamien, De-Phazz, Thievery Corporation, King Britt, UFO, Funky Lowlives, etc...
BUT BEWARE, the sound is not jazz (maybe nu-jazz or electro-jazz, but not jazz). It is definitely sexy, groovy, funky, retro-cool, classy electronic music with touches of jazz. Perfect for any situation. Pre-party warm-up at home, martini-drinking at a nice lounge, people-watching at THE white party in South Beach, or maybe simply at home working on your laptop.
This CD is sooo good, it's gonna make you feel hip, cool, and sexy...But all that BS aside, the track selection, remixes, and overall production quality make of this album a TRUE GEM. Go get it.

nice edition, perfect albumReviewer ID:
Review Date: 2008-12-27
Just to confirm, the final track on disc 2 (Lady Is a Tramp/Fly Me to the Moon) is just a goof-off instrumental from the rehearsals, which demonstrates the humorous side of this heavy band & album but otherwise for completists only. While some thought has been put into the running order of the bonus disc and its flow, I agree with a previous reviewer that more could have been included: namely, more rehearsals. The unConventional box hints at tantalizing alternate-arrangement attempts at Tam Lin, and even includes an early (admittedly lower quality) version of Farewell Farewell, and one of Crazy Man Michael, too (unless it's an alternate mix). At the very least, the alternate mix of Come All Ye from that box should've been included here; there's no Swarb fiddle on it, but consequently there's alot more of Thompson's guitar so it's a more rocking mix. Both versions are equally perfect, but one hasn't been widely heard.
As for what is here, it's hard to complain if you HAVEN'T been collecting whatever was previously out there: the BBC session in full (also available on the BBC box), and the official studio outtakes from the album. Of these, Sir Patrick Spens is the one true lost gem that belongs on the album; I'd have had no problem with it being added to disc 1, as I think it would've had there been room on the original LP. I'd never had either of the Quiet Joys of Brotherhood takes; they're haunting and great. But Reynardine already fills the meditative, Sailor's Life slot on Liege and Lief, so I can see why they left off Quiet Joys. Nice to have them, though; not sure who's playing the droning instrument on this song, or what instrument it is, even; I assume it's Thompson, but then again there's no fiddle so maybe it's Swarb.
Anyway, a five-star classic album, a great bonus disc, and a great booklet. So I certainly can't give this deluxe package less than five stars, but diehards will still wish there were additional rarities. So many have been unearthed in recent years (including the stuff here) that fans have gotten spoiled. Just to confirm, if you haven't heard this BBC stuff, make no mistake, it's pure gold. (And demonstrates that Sir Patrick Spens was indeed a legitimate part of this material.)

Five Stars if You Don't Own the Single Disc Remaster...Reviewer ID:
Review Date: 2007-09-23
I fully approve of keeping bonus material separate from the original album in all but a few very exceptional cases(see "Unhalfbricking" for example)because, I find that, out takes, demo's, live and 'alternate' versions are so often a distraction or a dilution of the original album's quality. Yes I know, you can program them off, or even just be ready to press stop at the point the original would have ended, but I prefer it if such concerns are absent from the listening experience. In this case I think that there is such an odd blend of extras that keeping them separate is a very sensible idea.
However at the price it seems to me that it is not really for the casual fan looking to `see what all the fuss is about' and the `very keen fans' will have, all but a couple, of the extra tracks already. Most importantly the record company could/should have released it at the same time as the 'single disc re-master' as this would have avoided the accusation that owners of that version are being cynically manipulated into making an additional purchase that they shouldn't have to.
This is an excellent presentation of a truly great album and if you don't already own a copy and/or don't mind paying the extra money then this is definitely the best available edition.
