For Vangelis and/or Amazon to market this as a release of "all" the music from Blade Runner is a fraudulent lie because there are many excellent pieces from the movie that are NOT on this set. This is very irritating. For those of you who call us "BR Purists"...doesn't it bother you that you were lied to so as to dupe you into buying something other than what you thought you were getting? If this had been marketed as "New Music Inspired by Blade Runner" then I would have no complaint (except for those below).

Now having said that there are some nice pieces in this set. But...and now for my other complaint...the best of them are on disk 3 and they are practically ruined by these stupid and barely intelligible "voices" that are thrown in here and there (e.g., "Ridley signing off...Ridley signing off...Ridley signing off..."). I hate when artists do this. They seemingly want to "spice up" there work with something unusual so they throw something in that really doesn't belong like nature sounds or spoken words. A good example is the track "Up and Running". It is a really cool piece of music but it is basically ruined by a looped sample from the track "One More Kiss Dear". I mean what in hell was Vangelis thinking? Does he really think we want to hear "One more kiss dear...dear...dear...dear...dear...dear...dear...dear...dear...dear...dear... This brings up another point. Artists of the world...are you listening...repetition almost always sucks! It gets very irritating very quickly and especially when it involves human voices. Don't ruin your otherwise good material with it.

It's more than you could ever want....

For years, Blade Runner fans had to endure the New American Orchestra soundtrack, which was simply inferior to the sensual, atmospheric music found on the soundtrack. It's still available for purchase, but its an oddity at best. Although, sometimes, I pop in the player just for old times sake.
Then, in 1994, the new CD of Vangelis' soundtrack was announced and I still recall buying it on the first day of release. I loved it, but some die-hard fans felt it was an unexpected slight. I adored the reworkings and ambient dialouge insertions and listened to it many times over the years.
In later years, Gongo (a fake US based company from 'Romania') took advantage of a public need and released the original soundtrack in its full glory (how they got it is debatable). The disc quality was good, but not mind-blowing. The Gongo edition is essentially the purest edition of the soundtrack that mirrors the Vangelis score found in the motion picture.
The new 3-disc 25th Anniversary disc has now been released. Oddly, disc one is the 1994 release. In the liner notes, Ridley Scott clearly understands that some fans were not that thrilled with the release, but there it is. Why not make disc one a remastered disc of the Gongo edition?
Disc 2 is an incredible collection of unreleased 1982 tracks as well as extended versions of familiar tracks from the film.
Disc 3 is newly created by Vangelis that are inspired by the original score. Again, Vangelis mixes in soundtrack elements along with dialouge readings from everyone to Roman Polanski to Oliver Stone. In short: its awesome!
Buy it, but shop Ebay for that Gongo disc just to be sure you have it all.

This is the definitive music to accompany one of the best movies ever made. Dream like, it evokes the futuristic aspects of the film and is both relaxing and stimulating to the senses.

For years, I have loved the majestic soundscapes that are the genius of Vangelis. This set has finally brought the "Blade Runner" magic to full height. I don't mind at all that disc 1 is the same track listing of the 1994 release. It was just nice having every haunting note that made up the original score in one complete set. And the new material on disc 3 is a wonderful compliment to the feel that Vangelis was striving for on his original soundtrack.
Now if we could just talk him into releasing the entire score from "The Bounty", perhaps the planets will align.

I love the score for Fight the Future (even though it was mastered incorrectly--the right and left channels are switched). Much like the film, however, I Want to Believe's score is boring. Just stick with the first film's score and you'll be all right.

Just track 10 "The Surgery" and 21 "X-files Theme (unkle variation) alone are worth the price of the entire soundtrack.

A little dance and electronica, the latter has got to be one of the best renditions ever of the X-Files theme by Mark Snow.

"The Surgery" is an amazingly haunting and soulful tune that serves as a reminder to everyone (especially X-philes who watched the entire series) that the X-Files is not just science fiction, but there is a lot more heart, emotions, and faith in it.

The rest of the tracks are mainly pieces that are probably only suitable to the story during the progress of the show, several containing the X-files theme and from "The Surgery".

Track 14 "Mountain Montage" is totally reminiscent of the starting credits theme in Se7en, painting a picture of a gritty dark washed-out thriller film. Mark Snow is indeed quite a versatile soundtrack composer!

Almost as strong as the first Underworld soundtrack!

I was a HUGE fan of the first Underworld soundtrack. It was raw, heavy and it featured some of my favorite artists. From the opening 'Awakening' track to the utterly mesmorizing 'All of This Past', the first Underworld soundtrack was close to perfection in my eyes.

The Rise of the Lycans soundtrack does not fall far behind. I have had the CD for about a week now and listened to it all the way through on repeat during a roadtrip this weekend. With every additional listen, I found myself loving it all the more. Granted, just like with the first Underworld soundtrack, there are a few bad apples (my opinion), but the Rise of the Lycans soundtrack succeeds overall in providing great driven, dark, and addicting beats.

Admittedly, music preferences are subjective but these are a few of the standout tracks from the album:

1. Lighten Up Francis (JLE Dub Mix) - Puscifer
2. Underneath The Stars (Renholder Remix) - The Cure (f/ Maynard James Keenan/Puscifer and Milla)
8. Board Up The House (Renholder Remix) - Genghis Tron
9. Stiff Kittens (Jnrsnchz Blaqkout Remix) - Blaqk Audio
16. Steal My Romance - Ghosts On The Radio (this is becoming my favorite track on the soundtrack!)

Songs that I found myself skipping everytime they started to play (again, just my opinion):

3. Nasty Little Perv (Renholder Remix) - Perry Farrell (irritating and subpar lyrics)
6. Over And Out (Renholder Remix) - Alkaline Trio
10. Broken Lungs (Legion Of Doom Remix) - Thrice (too slow and uninteresting)
12. I Want You To - Black Light Burns (simply not my cup of tea)

Overall, this is a great rock/industrial soundtrack with some outstanding remixes by danny lohner. I would highly suggest it to anyone who enjoyed the first Underworld soundtrack as they are both along the same lines in terms of the type of content. The Rise of the Lycans is a refreshing soundtrack that has managed to, yet again, introduce me to some outstanding artists and fresh material.

An Original and Thoroughly Enjoyable Listening Experience

Rise of the Lycans is the third installment in the Underworld saga, and its soundtrack had a lot to cover in regards to the fairly epic movie. "Rise of the Lycans," thankfully, regains nearly all of the originality and thoughtfulness of the first soundtrack that was utterly lost on the "Evolution" soundtrack, and fully satisfies both as a soundtrack to the film and as an awesome mix.

Virtually every song on this CD is remixed or reproduced for an original Underworld sound, and the new material will satisfy any fan. The emo stylings of the "Evolution" soundtrack are thankfully nearly completely excised, leaving "Rise of the Lycans" in a darker, more industrially-based rock scene. The masterful remixing by the ever-talented Danny Lohner (credited on the Underworld soundtracks as `Renholdër') keeps the metal from being too harsh at the same time as keeping the softer tracks from being too lulling.

My personal favorite and the track featuring the most famous rockers is "Underneath the Stars [Renholdër Remix]," contributed by The Cure. The vocals of the lead singer float smoothly over the track as the remix blends with the original rock, and the song is lent great power by the blend of featured artists, a combination of The Cure, Puscifer, Maynard James Keenan (of Tool fame), and the ever-beautiful vocal stylings of Milla Jovovich (credited in her singing capacity simply as Milla), who contributed the luscious "Rocket Collecting" to the original "Underworld" soundtrack.

"Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" opens with Puscifer, who again contributes a fine opening, followed up with lush new tracks from Deftones, AFI, Alkaline Trio, and William Control (featuring Matt Skiba). The swelling sounds of the opening slip into some generally good tracks that don't leave you wanting, leading up to Combichrist's masterful "Today We Are All Demons [Beneath the World Mix]."

"Rise of the Lycans" misses a beat after this with some fairly mediocre tracks - in particular the emo-styles of Drop Dead, Gorgeous as they contribute the generally whiny and annoying "Two Birds, One Stone." The album, however, jumps right back from this dangerous ledge that "Evolution" unfortunately fell from with King Black Acid, ending with the lovely "Steal My Romance" by Ghosts on the Radio.

In the end, Rise of the Lycans is a slightly darker, more industrial sound than the previous Underworld albums, but it is a 7-League-Boot stride greater than the "Evolution" soundtrack and more than lives up to the great example set by the original Underworld soundtrack album.

4.5/5 Stars

While all fans of the Underworld films have come to expect epic vampire- and werewolf-filled battle sequences, the more musical fans have also come to expect top-notch soundtracks filled with a high level of quality tracks, often almost doubling as something like a rock/industrial score. And the soundtrack to the third film in the series doesn't disappoint on the quality front, featuring impressive artists like AFI, Alkaline Trio, The Cure, and Puscifer (the alias of Tool and A Perfect Circle's Maynard James Keenan), all expertly remixed by Renholder (album producer Danny Lohner).

From the creepy, crawling rhythm of Genghis Tron's "Board Up the House" (with the throaty, oft-repeated command to "hide upstairs and wait" backed by a throbbing, occasionally screaming beat) to The Cure's sensually pulsating "Underneath the Stars" (featuring the always evocative Milla Jovavich providing backup vocals), the soundtrack for Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is no "one-track" pony repeating the same expected stylings over and over. As producer, Lohner makes sure to instill his tracks with a general sense of continuity, providing a theme that gives the entire album a definite dark feel that carries effortlessly between the heavier and quieter songs, keeping Blaqk Audio's "Stiff Kittens" from going overboard with heaviness and, similarly, keeping Thrice's "Broken" from becoming too soft.

Overall, this album is a surprisingly beautiful mixture of industrial and rock acts that deliver a steady stream of darkly melodic tunes mixed to near perfect, though at times it could be argued that Lohner perhaps overmixes a bit. Also, listen to King Black Acid's "Let's Burn" for an example of one of the three tracks on the album that have been placed here "untouched" - as pointed out by a fan in a comment below. Fans of the Underworld films are sure to find plenty to like here and even those who have never laid eyes on a single frame will be more than impressed with the mixture of tracks.

This is an awesome soundtrack for people who like electronica....if you don't like electronica than you will hate this soundtrack. Most of the music on this CD is categoricly industrial or darkwave, allthough there is a tad of emo. Wes Borland (of BLACK LIGHT BURNS, BIG DUMB FACE, LIMP BIZKIT, and temporary live guitarist for MARILYN MANSON) plays a heavy hand by submitting not only an exclusive song of his own from his industrial rock band BLACK LIGHT BURNS, but also contributes the remixes on three other songs on this soundtrack. The darkwave sounding songs by WILLIAM CONTROL, BLAQK AUDIO, AFI (VNV NATION REMIX), are unusual songs made exclusivly for this release. The terror techno band COMBICHRIST is featured here as well as a song by PUSCIFER, IMO, stands out as one of the best tracks on the album. DANNY LOHNER is all over this production as well. All in all.....this is a wicked music soundtrack....again, only if you like electronica. Underworld 3 is For fans of dark electronic music and industrial rock.

Salieri... Again unjustly omitted

In the 1830 Russian poet Alexander Pushkin wrote his "Mozart and Salieri". It followed one of the (many) rumors around Mozart's early death current in Europe of then. According to it Salieri had poisoned Mozart. It is actually from that moment on that this version became a dominant one for a long lasting period. And this is the only vice of Pushkin's "Mozart and Salieri".
Salieri was mostly rehabilitated when Peter Shaffer's play was written, than arrived Forman's movie. Both works by themselves are highly talented and exciting, but just as Pushkin's poem they make a great and unworthy injustice with Salieri, who definitely was not a mediocrity, to put it mildly. The Soundtrack just follows the same path. True, there was not much of Salieri music in "Amadeus", but there surely were more of it than just Axur's finale. As one reviewer has noted here, even this 3 CD's compilation is incomplete, and for me this incompleteness shows itself most boldly because of the aforementioned lack of Salieri's pieces.
So it is Mozart's part of Amadeus rater than the complete movie soundtrack. Regarded as such it is undoubtedly great and awesome. One may suppose when it comes to Mozart, no interpretation can injure the music of this genius. It is unfortunately not the case, and actually there exist some performances that completely robes Mozart' music. Happily this is not applied to Neville Marriner and Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields approach. I can only point to somehow disappointing Eine kleine Nachtmusik interpretation, as also was pointed by another reviewer previously. It makes an impression of superficiality and over-lightness. Amongst many other much more impressing performances, I Musici's one from their Philips's compilation may be noted.
But the rest of the Mozart's trucks are excellent indeed.
Highly recommended.

I saw this movie for the first time at sixteen and was immediately captured by the music. Sure, I'd heard Mozart in the past...but never quite so well done! Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields brought the music to life on a level I've yet to hear matched.

The choice of compositions was perfect not only for those appreciating the movie, but also anyone interested in a "Greatest Hits" album. Obviously, this is a subjective assessment. But I do believe that the Amadeus soundtrack provides an excellent starting point for someone who might be new to Mozart and interested in some highlights from his amazing career. Here we have selections ranging from chamber music up to the best symphony orchestra and imperial opera.

In September of last year, I had an opportunity to hear the full Requiem performed in Amsterdam's Westerkerk and I was carried back to the first time I heard the composition in the late 1980s. The version of Requiem on this album is abbreviated, but it does represent the high points of Introitus, Dies Irae, Rex Tremendae Majestatis, Confutatis, and Lacrimosa.

This is an exceptional production all around - from the instruments, to the voices, all the way to the recording itself. Every element contributes to a finished work of sophistication and grace. Highly recommended!

How could anything by Mozart that is recorded by such professionals be anything but beautiful? The selection of music is superb, magnificently performed and recorded.

I was disappointed though, that some of the music is not that used in the film. For example, the "Queen of the Night" Aria was sung by June Anderson according to the film credits, but is not on the CD. The soprano on the CD is lovely but June really was special in the film. Also many of the recording in the film were in English were as they are not on the recording. Good English recordings are difficult to find.

Overall, 5 stars for quality, but loses one star for the lack of "trueness" to the film.

A physicist tried to explain to his class the most complex theory in physics, something called the Unified Field Theory that Einstein passed away before solving, and no one has solved to this date. Wait, said the teacher, I have it! The instructor whipped out a CD of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and played the K 492 - Act 4: Ah Tutti Contenti. In the film Amadeus, this is the piece that F. Murray Abraham, in the character of Salieri, praises as the first kind statement of a husband to a wife in years, which explodes into a musical dialog of reconciliation.

I was thinking about this and Russian dolls when I opened a large box that arrived last week. I was expecting a CD, I thought, so what's inside this huge box? Well, 7/8 of the box was air, literally inside bubble wrap. And then the packaging of the box set itself, and then, cut into a small hole in the box set itself, was a standard size CD jewel case. Granted, the reason for the large packaging was the inclusion of a beautiful vinyl album sized collection of pictures and information from the film and track listing.

But, back to the metaphor on physics, after playing the 3 CDs in the case, I felt that no box on the planet, indeed in the whole universe, would have been big enough to contain this music.

No one can say enough about the performances of St. Martin of the Fields. I was also greatly impressed by the piano performances by all the performers, especially Imogen Cooper's playing of Mozart: Piano Concerto In D Minor, K 466 - 2. Romanza.

Also granted, as others have noted here, some of the Opera performances could have been more fully represented, and there are other renowned recordings, especially of the Operas, that are undeniably better.

But as an almost complete collection, any Mozart lover, indeed any music lover, should not be without this box set, the accompaniment to my favorite film of all time.

Mozart for everyone!

I have to agree with all the other rave reviews but for one thing; at the end of the film, during the beginning of the credits, Celia Cruz reprises La Dicha Mia in a much more energized and improvisational way, but this song is not included on the album. A pity because it is one of my favorites.

I bought this CD for this one song, offered in two versions. The English version by Los Lobos and the Spanish version sung by Antonio Banderas. The songs are as fresh today as when they were first released.

The other songs are great, too, but that one song is my favorite!

I saw Meet the Robinsons when it first came out and it didn't thrill me (plus I may have slept through part of it). But I recently watched it again (and stayed awake this time) and liked it much better and discovered there was a variety of good music in there as well. I guess I was drawn to this soundtrack by Rob Thomas' Small Wonders, but have come to appreciate much of the other music by Rufus Wainwright, Jamie Callum, the ALl-American Losers, and of course Danny Elfman. There's a range of styles from pop/rock to Rat-Packish big band to Elman's usually energetic, yet strangly reto score. (I'm 45, so the Jonas Brothers song doesn't do much for me, but it's there as well.) This is lyrics-heavy soundtrack, but it's become a disc I listen to usually all the way through again and again in my car. One complaint for me is the cover art, which certainly didn't draw me and doesn't evoke the spirit of the film for me.

Great Music!

Walt Disney's 46th feature length animation, and their major animated effort for 2007, Meet the Robinsons surprisingly fell under the radar, and was a comparative box office failure. It tells the story of a young orphan inventor named Lewis, who embarks on a series of extravagant, time-traveling adventures with various members of the futuristic Robinson family as he attempts to find his real family. The film was directed by Steve Anderson and featured the voice talents of the likes of Angela Bassett and Tom Selleck, as well as an original score by Danny Elfman. The film sees Elfman in what one could call "madcap mode", in much the same way as he was on scores such as Flubber and Mars Attacks. The score see-saws between emotional, heartfelt orchestral themes - notably "The Prologue", "A Family United" and the sumptuous finale "Setting Things Right" - and Elfman's brand of patented wackiness. The zaniness first emerges in the quirkily helter-skelter "To the Future", and continues through the funky retro grooves of "Meeting the Robinsons" and the rampaging Beetlejuician tones of "The Science Fair". There's even a duet between a Theremin and Elfman's patented la-la choir in "Pop Quiz and The Time Machine Montage", in case you had forgotten which composer had written the music and needed a reminder. It's all fun, undemanding stuff, and firmly rooted in the offbeat Elfman sound that many people love, but when compared to Elfman's wider body of work it seems a little insubstantial. The songs which pad out the CD running time are actually all pretty decent, ranging from cover versions by the sultry-voiced Jamie Cullum to the quirky title track, "Another Believer", by singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, which will likely be up or Oscar consideration.

We loved the movie, and now the music.

This was another CD I bought for my little one and it was a big hit! At first it was great to get the initial excitment and believe me the screams from the back seat #18, #18!!! A Jonas brothers song, became a headache, but also one I could play in the office as well. It really is a great CD but a little heavy on the orchestra side.

Most of you know him from Dire Straits! But this man is incredibly talented with the pen. This whole CD is on my iPod and in my rotation at home. His eclectic musical tastes and skill of capturing the "feeling" of the moment on film are keen. He's right up there with Randy Newman. I saw him live on July 1st and his closing song was off of this album!

This CD consists of musical selections from the soundtracks of "Cal, Last Exit to Brooklyn, The Princess Bride," and "Local Hero" by Mark Knopfler finger-picking rock guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, best known as the front man for Dire Straits.

"Cal" and "Local Hero" feature Celtic influenced music; "Princess Bride" is lilting and classical; "Last Exit" features melancholy violins. The best known tune on the CD is the "Local Hero" theme, "Going Home," which Knopfler used to play in his live shows. The outstanding feature of the CD is Knopler's guitar playing which as always is complex and tuneful.

If the CD lacks anything it is majesty -- but none of these films was majestic, so Knopfler can be forgiven for not writing an ear-thumping "Lord of the Rings"-type theme. My wife calls a couple of the pieces drippy, but most are very good, a few beautiful, and all good, easy listening.

got given this today, and whilst being a fan of mark knofler and dire straits, i can't stand this. full of drippy, sniveling, rubbish. none of the soulful bluesy or even fun-filled stuff that i know and love. my girl got it as a present for me, and i hate it that much that i couldn't even be civil enough to lie about it.

i thoroughly recommend that you audition this before purchasing it...

and it is sorely lacking the maestro on his guitar, reminding us that, "man that guy can play..."

When I first got this CD after compulsively watching the movie several times over, I have to admit that I was a little bummed that not all of the songs I was expecting to hear were there. Over time it really grew on me and I have been quite please with the CD. I've picked up more of the music of the different bands featured on it. It's a great choice for someone who likes to keep a nice variety of sounds swimming in her ears. It has given me a taste of artists that I wouldn't normally have stumbled upon otherwise. See the movie if you want a fun & funky chick-flick. If it gets you revved you can expect to be dancing, hopping, bobbing & lipsynching to the soundtrack!

This recording is derived from many movie soundtracks Vangelis has done over the years. I honestly have not seen most of these movies but the music stands up well on its own. You do not need to have seen any of the movies to have this disc be a valued part of your collection.

The "Chariots of Fire" theme alone should be required content in anyone's library. Oft-satired, this song epitomizes effort and the concept of the race.

The more obscure pieces such as the portion of "Heaven and Hell" pulled as part of the Cosmos series with Carl Sagan evoke emotion. I was very happy to see this song included in this collection.

If you like New Age, Electronic, Soundtrack, or Avant Garde music you will find a wealth of entertainment here. Even if these are not your style, this disc stands up as great material.

Just love this CD!

I wonder if Vangelis' other music is equivalent to his movie soundtracks. I never saw Blade Runner or any other film but Chariots of Fire which I adore. Vangelis' sound is unique and wonderful. It's soothing music to listen to anywhere, home, the car, or an exercise class like yoga. Vangelis' sound can calm you down after a bad day or make those driving trips worth the hourlong compact disc of his music.

Vangelis has reached an honor place among the most emblematic, prolific and imaginative creators of atmospheres at the moment to compose a soundtrack.

Try to imagine just for a moment what would it have been about the legendary cult movie Blade runner if not for that formidable theme, for instance; and the same question turned
around Chariots of fire.

Only Vangelis `s kaleidoscopic state of mind could make it. And this album contains some of his most representative titles along almost thirty years of fruitful trajectory.

Go for this CD without hesitation.

An outstanding album
